Oh hell, yes. I don't much care if something is trendy or in style if I love it.

I have a closet full of leather jackets and shoes that are testament to that belief. Many of those items I've had and worn since the 1980's. Sure, sometimes they don't get a lot of play, but they get enough that they get to keep their spot in my closet.

Also, I am constantly amused by the cycle at which styles come back into being in fashion (and the fact that leopard is now apparently a neutral and always in style. Go figure).

As a former vintage clothing dealer I would just read the fashion mags to see what old style was now trending as being fashionable and reproduced by designers for exorbitant money. Then I'd go out and get my hands on the original vintage version for waaay less to sell to my clients.

My first pair of Frye engineer boots are a good example. Purchased in the 80's. Classic style. Been wearing them for 30 years. Then about a decade ago they began gaining popularity again. Frye then reissued them and next thing you know, my beat up old Frye's were suddenly the epitome of trendy. I'll never forget some woman stopping me on the street to exuberantly ask me "where did you get those boots!! They're amazing!"

My response: "Ummm, at a bootery in Florida like twenty-some-odd years ago."

She looked disappointed. Lucky for her Frye reissued them later that year.

What goes around come around. So if I love it, it stays and I wear it. Trends be damned.

To Catnip and ClearlyClaire...I have the cousin to your Rolex! 1983, two-tone Jubilee bracelet, champagne dial. Bought in Bermuda, most expensive thing I had ever bought for myself. ($1300) It's a Date, not Datejust, not sure what the difference is. I've worn it every day since, it's been back to be cleaned twice. I am thinking about having the links in the band tightened, but it looks good and only a real Rolex nut would be able to tell the band had stretched. (It's an expensive repair.) Other than that, things I wear even though they are no longer in style: pocket squares and silk flowers on my jacket lapels. (not nec. together.) I love the look, maybe it's sort of a signature?

Mostly I seem to have this reaction with handbags - esp. really soft leather bags or bags that look like "art" in some way to me. I have a small collection some of which I never even really planned to use but I just "wanted" to display. I guess I also have it with jewelry, not that I buy a lot but I do have plenty of pieces that I rarely wear but I loved when I saw them.

So fun! And coming to this now I don't have to think much - just lift other people's answers. I can't promise I will love them forever but the following are still hanging in there after all this time: cowboy booties, silver hoops (just occasionally, but they are always my dress up choice), big watches and lace up oxfords. My first big shoe purchase was loafers and I still have several. Vintage coats including a velvet jacket. I am sure there are more!

My mother's Cowhican sweater. It's from the seventies.
Also my dad's Scottish cashmere turtleneck. My mom stole it from Dad, he never wore it. I found it in her cedar chest. It's from early 70's and still hasn't pilled.

Such an interesting question, Claire. Those pumps will be fab on you!
I wish I could say that my whole wardrobe would fit this category. That is a dream goal. I would say moto jackets, the colors blush and tomato, my long cascading cardigans, striped tees, kimono jackets and polkadots.
Now to go back and read everyone's responses.

Claire, it's so funny that you started this thread because I was just thinking about this very thing tonight--would I wear certain pieces of clothing if they went out of style? And my answer was YES! I was in particular thinking of my Citizens of Humanity black coated skinnies, which look like leather. Even if the skinny look and leather go out of style, I will still be wearing these puppies! I think that it really depends on "owning" the item as part of your style and keeping it as part of a cohesive outfit.

I'm so excited you bought the Ollies! I tried them on in Nordie's a while back, but the strap around the instep gaped too much for me. I can't wait to see pics of you styling them!

This is an interesting question for me. Nothing in my wardrobe, including shoes, is more than three years old because I lost a bunch of weight and had to replace everything. I do have a whole bunch of earrings that I love and will continue to wear no matter what -- my pearl studs, my diamond studs, and my gold hoops of various sizes. Clothing? It's turning out that I'm fairly fickle so I can't come up with anything that I'm all that super attached to.

Angie, yes. Hehe, be careful what you say around me. ;)

Karie, I loved Mary Tyler More's outfits in the Dick Van Dyke show!

Columbine, I am new to polka dots, but I must admit they're growing on me. Have you been partial to them your whole life?

Suzanne, that is such a neat story about your Donald Pliner sandals. How wonderful that they are still going strong after all these years. Now that is quality worth paying a little extra for!

Denise, it makes me sad that someone said your coat looked dated, but I think you know yourself and fashion well enough to determine that it's not dated "for you". With all these great 90's looks trending again, I hope to see some of your fabulous designer clothing come out of storage and make an appearance on the forum.

TraceyLiz, I was just thinking the other day how I miss a refined wedged espadrille. They are a favorite warm weather shoe of mine.

I have a faux fur coat from the 90s that I have always loved. I remember posting it in one of my very first WIWs here on YLF over 3 years ago. Someone commented that it looked dated. I still love this coat, and wear it, but haven't posted a pic on YLF since (I know, I'm such a chicken).

My Donald Pliner sandals before I realized he was someone with a Name. I bought what are now called FiFi sandals over 10 years ago. They were a newer version of a sandal I had previously had of his, bought thru Garnet Hill catalog. I thought they were beautiful and had to have them. I think they cost about $125 at the time which was way too much but I thought I'd wear them for awhile. Well, I'm still wearing them all these years later. Now they are sold in colors and jewel-encrusted for just about $200. I crave the turquoise pair but they are well outside my budget. I still love how they look while worn. The heels and leather tops are completely "unworn" looking. I will be wearing them in 25 years.

It's a tactile thing for me. I have a 15 year old velvet jacket, and I have an irrational love of my two leather jackets. I love to touch these clothes, and smell the leather. I'm deathly afraid of wearing out my black lace button down, and don't wear it as much for fear of wearing it out!

Right now I'm having cold sweats. My favourite Mariner T's are getting too...no, they DO look shabby, and I haven't found replacements.

Angie, we must have cross posted. I love the Ollies if I can make that loose bottom strap work. I'll post a picture in a few days so you can help me judge them. So. Ink and blush have earned a forever place in your heart? Is there still room for turquoise? I loved reading your list, and I love the way you mix things that you love that might not be on-trend with cutting edge pieces. You show us the way, lady!

Lisa, bootcuts look so good on you. I have never been able to really make them work for my style. I do, however, share your eternal love of blue.

A great question. I have adopted skinny jeans tucked into tall boots. But I have not given up my bootcut jeans and shorter boots, I've just worn them a little less (once a week instead of say everyday). Also the color blue, I will always have blue in my wardrobe (after all it matches my eyes). And wearing a watch, I wear one daily and it is a classic style. I am also always attracted to stripes and dots as my prints.

Lyn D., thanks for thinking of me; you're such a sweetie. I'm doing very well. Anyway, WOW, a thrifted Chanel dress? Tell your DDs that I will come back to haunt them if they ever get rid of it!That sounds like the type of dress you can pull out of your closet (in any decade) and wear whenever the need arises. I don't recall having seen it so I'll have to dig back in your posts to see what I've missed.

Malina, I've always wondered about those shoes. I think you were ahead of the curve on that purchase. And no worries, your suede and leather pants will be in style for a good long time I suspect.

Janet, I'm a huge fan of your style. Anything you put on is instantly cool. Especially cowboy boots and leather jackets. *Another Valentino Rockstud owner right here everyone!*

Jenny H, I did not see a lot of tall boots during that time frame either, but I'll bet Angie was wearing them. Consider yourself in good company.

Thistle, don't feel bad! Your job and climate keep you from getting too crazy. Wait! What about that fab leather jacket you found?

Shannon!!! I skipped over you and I'm so sorry. I know exactly the purple leather jacket you're talking about. All the buttons are different and it's so distinctive. How sweet that a gift from your hubby is one of your forever loves.

Catnip, you are not going to believe this, but our watches must be sisters if not twins! Mine has the stainless and gold bracelet and also a blue face, but we skimped on the datejust feature to save money (so there's no bubble on the crystal). DH bought me mine pre-owned on our first anniversary in 1992, but it was made around the same time as yours. Mine has also been to the Rolex hospital at least twice. Last summer I went swimming with the stem pulled out by accident and after a week in a bag of dry rice it is good as new. Well almost. I have been wearing it in a sea of Big Watches for some time now, so I can relate.

Yay. You purchased the Ollies. I can't wait to see them on you, Claire. They will look impeccable - I have no doubt.

My goodness. Where do I start? Crisp masculine button downs. Pointy toe footwear. White-Out. Tailored black turtlenecks. Peacoats. White jeans. Straight leg blue jeans. Motos. Things in Ink, Citron, Tomato Red, Lime Green, Blush, Light Blue and of course - Black & White. Stripes, dots and tartan. Pearls. '60s and '80s fashion.

Okay. I'll stop there.

It would have to be my Rolex watch with the stainless steel bracelet and blue face. I bought it in 1983... that's not a typo. It has been to the watch hospital in Geneva twice and is about to be sent off again. Otherwise, it 's not off my wrist except for very dressy occasions.

I almost didn't buy it, but my husband talked me into it. I thought it was way too expensive even though I had just gotten a big promotion. The current CPW is about $0.08 so, financially speaking, it's probably the best purchase I ever made. And I absolutely love it, even after over thirty years.

I want to have something to add to this list, and I have thought about it for some time now. I have nothing :(

Well, maybe sweaters and trousers. I need them both to stay warm in the winter!

Timely question, this morning as I was walking to the metro I was thinking about knee high boots. I was thinking very emphatically as I walked that if they ever go out of style, I will keep on wearing them. They are so vital to my warmth in winter.

Veering slightly off topic: I was also wondering if they ever have been out of style. I don't remember seeing anyone wearing them when I was in grade school/high school. late 80's through 90's time frame. But was that just because I didn't grow up in a very fashion forward place?

I will hold fast to my love for pointy toe shoes even after this trend phase passes -- I'm sorry I got rid of some if my old ones.

Cowboy boots haven't been on trend since I don't know when, but I do not care. I have three pairs and another I'm anxiously awaiting.

Moto jackets won't be on trend forever but I'll wear mine anyway. They're such a great style for helping my shoulder line balance my hips.

I will keep wearing mid- to slightly-low-rise jeans as long as I can. I hate how high rises look on me, so I really hope mom jeans don't edge lower rises out of the market!

I will wear colors I love regardless of trend. I just stock up when my colors become available!
