I love scarves but I'm starting to get pickier about them. I am an impulse scarf buyer, so I'm attracted to certain colors, color combinations, or patterns, and in fabrics that are soft and not scratchy or itchy. I usually like something lightweight but with a little bit of fullness, so it doesn't just lie in a thin, limp form. But I don't like a scarf that's too bulky, because I have a small head and can look overwhelmed by a really voluminous scarf. I prefer oblong scarves, but I also wear large square ones folded corner-to-corner.

I tend to like them best styled simply -- a simple loop at the front with the ends tucked in, or wrapped once around the neck with both ends falling loose down the front, which is a favorite because it helps visually elongate my short torso. Whenever I try wearing a scarf wrapped all the way around my neck with nothing hanging down, I usually don't love the look on me. I have some infinity scarves, but I'm feeling a little bit over them -- I don't know why. Maybe they're a little limiting since I like the long and loose look. I noticed that last winter I didn't wear the infinity ones as much.

I have a pretty big collection -- I could probably stand to go through and cull some I don't wear anymore, but they're one of those things, like jewelry, that I tend to hang onto in case my preferences change.

I've not yet read the other replies but I wear many shapes and sizes of scarves across all seasons. I wear them to fill in necklines that are too wide for me, to keep warm, to keep cool, add a third piece, and more.
I mostly choose scarves because I'm attracted to the color(s), pattern, and fabric. I've found that a scarf I love can become a workhorse even if I'm not sure about how to wear it when I buy it. What I don't use much are chunky wool scarves for outer wear. They can be too warm for the climate.
I wear them many ways and am always looking for new ones. The Angie knot is a favorite, as is twisted and tied in back.
http://youlookfab.com/2009/04/.....ngie-knot/
I also like to do a a Euro knot with variations

Lisap - I don't think you're being obnoxious at all. I love the idea of investment scarves but when I first started experimenting with scarves, I had little confidence and no idea what kind of scarves would work the best for me. So I found it really helpful to load up on thrifted and inexpensive scarves first, and just play with them, to see what I liked best, what kind of fabrics (no silk for me), what size, what shape, what patterns and colors played the best with my wardrobe.

I also made it a goal to buy a scarf on any of my travels as a souvenir. In many urban areas you can find inexpensive scarves for sale on the street. For example on my last trip to NYC, I loaded up on solid pashminas for something like $3 each. I bought a rich cranberry red, a cobalt blue, and a cream scarf. Lo and behold, I wear the red the most. It has developed a few snags but I've proven that it's worthwhile to invest the $ in a higher quality cranberry red scarf. A lot of malls also sell these in the mall carts (though more than $3), so that is another source to try. The quality isn't all that great but for $3 per experiment it can't be beat. It's also a great & inexpensive way to experiment with potential new accent colors.

While it's true that some of my all-time favorite scarves were purchased online -- as I was drawn to the pattern (abstracts, paisleys, florals, plaid) -- I will say that it's always best to try on a scarf in person. Not just to feel the fabric, but also to see if it actually works for you and the way you want to tie it. Since I'm only 5', size can be a deal killer for me, as I'm quickly swamped. But then again if the fabric is very lightweight, an enormous scarf can work just fine. You don't know until you start wrapping and flinging and tucking.

Dianthanus - I recently moved my scarf collection out of my closet and into a basket, which I've filled with rolled scarves. I can see them better this way. I did a culling and then an audit to find out where I had some gaps. I had some gaps in solid scarves in my accent colors. That is a good place to start. Then also add some patterns that include your core neutrals + accents -- whatever pattern appeals to you. A floral worn with a striped top is a no-brainer. I do also find it handy to have a couple of scarves that are neutral only but with some sort of pattern for interest, for example I have a brown paisley I purchased in Vienna which gets tons of use since I can bookend it with my brown tall boots, and a light grey/cream abstract scarf which works when I'm feeling more monochromatic or already have too many colors going on elsewhere.

I also really like the scarves that come "pre wrinkled" for some reason.

Finally, I have very few heavy winter scarves left. I have a couple for use when shoveling snow or other outdoor gear-type activities. I find I am just as warm with a large, light weight pashmina triple wrapped tightly around my neck, rather than a big bulky & scratchy scarf.

I love my scarves for chilli weather, indoors or outdoors. Have plenty of them, all prints of some kind, as I don't wear much prints on my upper half, but stillI love to bookend or pull together with them some other colors(and vibes) of me or the outfit. Say my hair/eyes/glasses, the bag/shoes or even all these with the outerwear(which is very often all black). For outdoors I love heavier, and longer ones. For indoors lighter ones, but still long enough to make a statement wraped on somehow, but I don't like infinity ones for a matter.

As I don't wear much collars either, I love me some drama around my neck-so my faves are the ones which are ruched with a light elastic on their all length, in the middle of their width-if that makes sense. That way they will have added texture without having to do be knoted that special. Will look for some picties about as I was considering to buy a new one, just another day...:-)

I love scarves. My favorite shape is square, followed closely by a long, fairly narrow rectangle. I have a bunch of Hermes and Ferragamo squares; they're big (34 or 36") and fairly easy to wear in multiple ways. This year, I tried a smaller square (22-25") and fell in love so I will be collecting more of this size. There are plenty of silk paint artists on Etsy who do custom scarves and I like working with Tanya of Silk Scarves Colorado. She does a great job of bringing my vision to life. These smaller squares I just tie in a small knot off to the side of my neck. Easy-peasy.

I love scarves. I only get to wear them on the weekends though since scarves don't mix with lab work. I have one infinity scarf; the rest are oblong. I tried a square scarf once and I could never get it tied in a manner that I liked. I've got a few patterned scarves and one ombre scarf. Most however are either one color, or one color on either side of the scarf. I probably like the two-color scarves the best because I can create different looks by tying them differently. I like this Nordstrom scarf tying video.

I think I am a scarfaholic and I do wear them but maybe not as much as I like the idea of wearing them. So I have more than I need and am always tempted to add another.

The winter woolie-muffler-purpose ones are no-brainers and easy to incorporate. These might be various weights, not always bulky, but the point is, wearing one out the door, with a coat or jacket in cool weather, is very easy and natural, so ones that fit that purpose get a lot of use.

Wearing one indoors is more tricky, due to proportions and fussiness and other things. Like gigi, I can be overwhelmed by too much scarf.
But, the purpose is usually to function as the "third piece" (or in my case it's a kind of 4th) to try to add some completeness to a work outfit in winter--say in place of a necklace, since I otherwise have the top, pants or skirt, and lab coat. At work it can get in the way, depending on how it's worn, or may only be wearable on certain types of work days.

I generally prefer "matte" scarves, meaning, tissue wool, wool-silk blends, cotton blends, rather than shiny ones. I'm a sucker for finely woven, soft fabrications.
I have a few silk scarves and love the idea of the classic or vintage silk scarf, but, since I spend a lot of time at work walking from place to place, I find the silk scarves fly and flap around and are distracting.
Usually it's color first, then pattern, that attracts me. I've become a greater appreciater of the value of the solid color, though overall most are patterned.

Love love love scarves. I love thick chunky infinity scarves. I like the lighter weight ones too, but prefer to have them wound around and around for more "heft" around my neck. I have a long neck and feel like I need a lot of scarf there. I like all colours, and often throw a bright jewel toned burgundy or purple one on top of all black or all neutral outfits in the winter. I'll even keep them on in the house since I run cold.

I love scarves. I tend to wear them without much thought. I just wrap them around my neck and adjust until it seems right. I prefer long oblong ones because they are the easiest to style that way. I have 2 infinity scarves and I do find they never sit properly. I love the colours and patterns on them so I endure the frustration.

My clothes tend not to be patterned. I like to wear accessories to jazz it up. Scarves can make the outfit interesting IMHO.

I used to wear scarves all the time, but in the last year or so not as often. I had dozens and dozens and purged a bunch and should purge even more. I like scarves to add pattern, so I don't ever wear the solid ones that DD gave me. (She's the one who wears only solid scarves.) I have a short neck and am short, so I don't like bulky scarves.

I find that in clothing, I gravitate to certain types of patterns/prints and not to others. I am discovering that this preference carries over to scarf patterns.

As my wardrobe has casualized and I stopped wearing silk/silky shirts, I rarely wear my silk scarves if they have a sheen to them.

Thanks for the links and advice ladies. I watched a few of the videos and re-read the suggestions. I realized that my heavier scarves never get worn - ever so something in a lighter or non-bulky fabric is the way to go. I usually do the european knot (ends through loop) but like the look of the scarf creating more of a elliptical shape on the chest than a V and the tutorials provided direction.

Lisa, don't worry. I never buy anything in person without touching/feeling the fabric first and often buy clothes based on the mood or feel it evokes. The scarf I picked up on the weekend was like that. It was cloudy greys with a bright pinky red and I walked away and back three times and then bought it.

I love wearing scarves. I like oblong ones and wear them folded in half and with the ends tucked through the loop. I have several oblong scarves that aren't long enough to do it that way, so I just loop it around my neck a couple times.

I buy most of my scarves at thrift stores. I look for good sizes, good colors, good materials, good condition.

We went to Turkey last year and I took a huge square scarf that I bought at Savers for $3. It had a nice drape and was in a paisley so worked with everything I brought. I liked it except for the fringe which kept getting stuck in the zipper of my Scotte vest. Of course at home I wear a scarf around my neck but in Turkey I had to wear it as a head covering several times.

I'm sorry - I know that sounded obnoxious, and I got back out of bed to add this. I have this love and attraction to art, fabric, design, colour - and when I see a pattern or print I like - it's almost a visceral reaction. Right now, there is a scarf at CM I am going to buy that is a dark moody rose print on black - very dark and sophisticated. But stuff like this stays with me, and I am moved by it . Again, I know I sound like an obnoxious snob? but truly it's not the case. At least I hope not. When I referred to the cheapo scarves as being my least favourite, it is because they weren't special to me in any way. I really should stop typing and go back to bed :)

Interesting responses here. I'm personally not a fan of too much trickiness and effort in putting on a scarf. It should look organic , not like some over thought accessory. Scarves fall into two categories for me: functional knit woollies for winter , and silk/blends/ cotton/rayon pieces that strike me for colour and pattern. I truly look at those as works of art. I guess there is a third category of functional , maybe single colour scarves that finish an outfit. But even they should have meaning. I go through my stash every once in awhile and the ones I never wear and don't care about are the cheapo ones bought on impulse. I suppose I look at scarves like jewelry in a way. It should be a personal thing. On the hunt for a butterfly print right now:)

Hmm...I am always looking for oblong scarves that aren't too big or bulky, because I am easily swamped by all the fabric! And it is very hard to find smaller scarves, let me tell you.

I have discovered that I like natural fibers, especially with some wool. I can handle a little bit of rayon, but I hate the big oblong scarves that are 100% rayon, because they drape really heavy and aren't light and airy, if that makes any sense.

I have also discovered that in general, I really like solid scarves, because I don't want my scarf to be the attention-getter in my outfit.

I like my scarf to be functional, not just for show. I am often cold, so I make sure that any scarves I buy will be warm and not really flimsy.

As for tying, I usually do either one wrap around the neck and let the ends hang down, or else I do a wrap around the neck and then tie the two ends together and let the tied ends fall down my midline. I also often take the scarf and fold it in half so it's only half as long, and then I put this along the back of my neck and pull the cut ends through the looped end. I hope that makes sense; it's a really common knot. I go to scarves.net to learn how to tie knots. I think that having a few great knots in your arsenal will help you wear your scarves more. Have fun!

I definitely prefer oblong and silk, but giant silk squares can work when I use them corner-to-corner. I have a number of McQueen scarves I wear almost daily during the winter, and I change the colour or pattern according to the coat or outfit I am wearing.

I study those tutorials but I am sort of a scarf flinger. I just twirl it around & let it land where it may. I like fluffy rectangles, so that lightest tissue weight of wool, or silk with some cotton or linen, or even spun polyester. (I'm a special ed sub; a certain amount of polyester is my friend!). Infinity scarves sort of frustrate me but i am trying with them. Srsly.

Scarves are my favorite accessory. They always fit, are easy to store, and last for decades -- I have some lovely vintage/retro scarves, and sentimental pieces I inherited.

As mentioned the options to consider are:
fabric/weave: silky or rough, natural or synthetic, heavy or lightweight
shape/size: rectangular, square, infinity, shawl
color: one or several, accents or neutrals; bolds, brights, clean or dirty tones.
pattern: floral, geometric, abstract; pattern scale and whether the scarf can be folded to feature different colors.
hemmed, fringed, tassled or not (fringe can always be removed)

There are many ways to tie scarves, also consider pairing more than one, or wrapping with a necklace.

Wendy's Look Book 25 Ways to Wear a Scarf in 4.5 Minutes! is a fun video
MaiTai's Picture Book features scarves and scarf accessories and has a list of tutorial links (lower right side of web page)
Already Pretty: Wearing Scarves and Necklaces Together
Already Pretty: Determining Your Ideal Scarf Style (lots of links here)
Janice RIggs of The VIvienne Files often uses scarves to pull an outfit together

These two scarf Finds were my B-day gift to myself. Scarf #1 is a lightweight rectangle with long fringe, lighter for summer use and goes very nicely with my citron tops. It includes my hair and skin tone as part of the color scheme (I think that is a tip from Imogen Lamport) along with the dark pink and citron stripes. Scarf #2 is a little earthier, and the olive green brings out my eye color. It goes very nicely with grays, blues and camel.

I love scarves! They are my favorite thing about winter.

My definite shape is oblong and I prefer lighter materials since I run hot and want to wear them indoors. I don't like silk, or silky feeling material, since it tends to slide around and knots aren't my favorite style. I also don't like infinity scarves because they take away all my tying options. Beyond that, I just look for colors I like or patterns I don't already have.

My best help when I was learning came from YouTube, specifically "Wendy's Lookbook". If you search that I'm sure you'll find it. She is way too annoyingly perky, but she does great instructions. I watched her videos, chose several I wanted to learned, parked my iPad in front of the mirror and practiced until I had it. Pretty easy once you get started!

I do the wrap-wrap-wrap-tuck. Like my most recent WiW. Or more loosely, a wrap wrap loosely and let the ends hang. I like oblong scarves the best. And pashminas or fine wool in a large square, that is light weight and wraps nicely/ not too bulky/ not scratchy. I also do the fold, wrap and tuck the ends into the fold. With some scarves I do the twist twist twist wrap wrap tuck.Sometimes I do the kerchief in front, fling the ends, wrap the ends.

These descriptives may not help as much as seeing a video. There are lots on youtube. Ultimately it's about the scarf. Some are conducive to various styling as above, some aren't.

If you're just getting your feet wet with this, try BR. They make very nice scarves. Especially if you want neutrals.

I love scarves, they are definitely a weakness of mine when shopping. :-)

I've found the website below to be very helpful for ideas on how to wear scarves, and I'm currently considering buying the two books even further below.

Lisa's posts with scarves got me looking at mine again after a few years with little use. Since I wear a lot of neutrals in winter, a scarf is a nice way to add a hit of color and pattern to an outfit. I was out doing errands yesterday and saw one in greys, black and red and it just appealed to me so I picked it up.
I'm interested to know what you look for in a scarf, favorite shape and how you wear them.

If you have a favorite way of tying and could share a pic and/or instructions that would be much appreciated too.
