Yeah, tall boots are a sticking point for me. A) I have large feet, skinny ankles and wide calves and B) I'm a cheapskate so any item where the baseline cheapest price for a quality option is $100 is going to give me palpitations. </p> <p>I also dislike categories of items I can rarely thrift, like boots and bras. (Well, you can thrift bras, but I gotta draw the line somewhere.) I feel like I balance out my costlier shoes, jeans, tops, with the ones that I can find cheaply secondhand, but (understandably) people keep decent boots until they fall apart, so they're rarely out there secondhand. My biggest regret at 60+ is that I didn't realize earlier how comfortable a properly fitted bra could be and that a lovely wisp of lace and wire could do more for my appearance and self-confidence than any of those ugly molded beige "basic" T-shirt bras that I'd been buying for years. Discovering European lingerie turned bra shopping from a chore into a delight. </p> <p>Like Mary K, though, I really dislike shopping when I feel pressured to buy something that is outside my normal look--as in something to wear to my son's wedding. Traditionally feminine "pretty" clothes just aren't my style and it's not easy to find an edgy, asymmetrical, Helmut-Lang-style, mother-of-the-groom dress. My boyfriend's department had a rather formal dinner a few years ago and I think I spent most of my free energy for a month trying to find a simple silk top that went well with a formal skirt. It drove me nuts. Oddly, found the perfect thing by chance at Nordstrom Rack despite ordering so many different options online. Time-consuming and depressing to try on a whole bunch of things just to find one option with a decent fit. And, like Janet, but probably even more so, the less-interesting options are usually the ones that work best for me, so spending all that effort just to find something boring is a little disheartening.</p> <p>Runners up are bras (boring and expensive) and outerwear (hard to find things that fit well everywhere and are weatherproof enough, and they're usually pricey enough that I have to focus on what fills a hole the best and not what I like best). </p>
