Now I have a binder filled with the extra buttons taped to the garment's hang tag and slipped into a pocket. I tried to organize them by use (shirt buttoms, coat buttons,..) and then by color (all red buttons on one page). They are pretty easy to find. If I get rid of a garment, I pin the extra buttons and tag to it. These days they are usually in a tiny ziploc bag. So when I remove the tags from the garment I trim off a piece of the tag to put in the bag with the button to identify it. She was the last surviving house maid of the richest family in town--they were lumber magnates. The family and riches where all but gone then.<br /> This woman had labelled just about each button on the string with a piece of cotton and had written in pen who and what piece of clothing each button had come from. It was very cool to hold in my hand the button that was tied by the very people who were displayed on the walls and in marble all around me. I documented , labelled and archived these now artifacts and always remembered them. winter coat buttons, cotton shirt buttons, pant fly buttons glove buttons...<br /> The old woman has since passed away with all her stories--she ran her hands over the buttons like the rosary and could tell me all about them and I wrote what I could, she was going to come back but didn't.
