The holes aren't going to get any better, they're going to get worse. StacyJo is right, they can patch lining sections - but I'd get the professionals to do it. I have a beloved leather jacket that I had half-relined. The tailor had kept linings from other coats and we went through them and found one that was a good match for mine! So it was doubly recycled.

If I had a wool coat that was getting down to the weave on the coat sleeves after 12 years, I'd retire it. Or send it off for the mother of all drycleanings and then decide.

You might want to see if it would be less expensive at a seamstress place. The only think I can think of is patching the holes with similar material and stitch witchery - it is a fabric binder that you use an iron to set/join two peices of cloth together.

I have a few items that have been worn to death, like 10-15 years or more. One is a single breasted mid-length camel wool coat from Macy's that goes with pretty much everything. Another is a light to mid-weight brown wool trouser from Ann Taylor. They both still look OK from the outside (although the coat is a bit dingy) but the linings have a bunch of holes. The pant lining is so shredded that it's hanging down my legs. And the jacket lining has two large holes and several smaller ones. I asked the dry cleaner how much it would be to replace the lining for the pants and it was going to be something like $45, yikes! I didn't even bother asking about the coat because it was going to be crazy, I'm sure. So what do I do with these items? They're still usable, but not in top condition (like some of the fuzziness has rubbed bare on the coat sleeves). The pants are OK, I could cut out the lining altogether for the pants and just wear them unlined. But I think the coat would look funny with no lining or with patches inside. Should I just keep wearing them with the holes (since most people don't see the inside)? Or is there some cheap way to fix them? I am not handy with sewing and don't have a sewing machine. Or maybe it's just time to replace them and put the money toward new clothes? I kind of don't like wearing them anymore because the holes bug me (*I* know they're there).
