Laura, that sounds like a great compromise. I compromise for DH by being sure that my hair has movement. His dislike is teased stiff big hair (we came of age in the 60's)

I feel so much more like myself with short hair. It took me far too long in life to figure that out and now there's just no going back!

With everyone's blessing, I am going ahead with my appt for blonde highlights but the pixie cut STAYS! I am sure hubby will come around to our way of thinking

Angie's right! I have, and love, long hair but it's not as edgy. Then you put all that work into growing it out and get too attached. You wear a pixie well and it's very stylish!

Wow. I have the opposite experience with the men in my life (hubby, family and friends). They all LOVE women with great short haircuts. Thinking its spunky and fab. Often very feminine. Do I live and hang around with non-stereotypical men?

Laura, now I understand why you were growing out your hair a little :0)

My dear Laura, your style will change 90 to 180 degrees when you grow your hair long. You'll obviously still be as pretty as can be - but you'll loose your edge. I think I might need to have tea with DH.

YOU LOOK KILLER TO THE POWER OF KILLER WITH A PIXIE CUT. Sorry for shouting. I feel strongly about this !

Laura, as a fellow short-haired wife, I understand your questioning here. I have seen your pics and you are fabulous with short hair.I am sure you are fantastically attractive with long hair too. So as everyone has said in various ways, it comes down to (in my opinion) what you prefer foremost and what your husband likes. Thankfully my husband likes short hair, but he usually goes along with whatever I want as long as I stay happy. More than having a "look" that they like(or are interested in at the time, this may be a passing phase, who knows), most reasonable men are happiest when their wives are happy with their own level of attractiveness. NO use having long wavy hair if you hate it yourself, or are vexed by all the work it takes. So I say take the complement that your husband thought you beautiful back then, and enjoy that he thinks you are beautiful now too--and tell him that. And that you feel beautiful with your hair this way;-)
No drastic moves yet

I agree Taylor, I think actual men like all types and hair colors. And many of them don't care about hair color at all, they are usually attracted to a smile or a laugh...or a b**b.

Oh, HUSBANDS. Why don't they come with instruction manuals?

Laura, I would ask him flat-out if he was just feeling nostalgic or if he really wanted you to grow your hair out or go blond again. Most of the time my husband is just talking for the sake of talking, but he doesn't actually think I should change anything. (Except wear less patent. He doesn't like patent. He is insane.)

It is a really interesting subject because the LAST woman my husband finds attractive the the Pamela Anderson type!!

I have a fair amount of male clients and I can say from my experience that most men go for the "total" package weather they like brunette or blonde, they aren't adverse to switching sides if they like the size and shape of the other:)

Laura - the nostalgia thing I was thinking was more like you feel about seeing photos of your kids when they were babies. You think how wonderful they were then, but of course you'd never change them for how they are now. I was just wondering if you suddenly magically produced that long blonde hair on you now, whether he'd really love it or it's just the image of those happy days he treasures.

You know, it's very ironic: When I was a teen and in my early 20's, the kind of guys I used to like preferred short hair (meaning above the shoulders and shorter) by a LANDSLIDE. All the cute punky girls had cute punky short hair that was either jet black or some other extreme color. Long hair was for boring ordinary girls. All of my male friends at the time had a strong preference for short hair and it was one of the first things they were attracted to in a girl. I guess it says a lot about who I surround myself with, but they all seemed to have the same preference for edgy dos (one of them mentioned Uma Thurman's Pulp Fiction hair as being "hot"). I had short hair at the time but it wasn't because of what they thought. I just happened to agree with them that I liked short edgy hair too (and still do). However, eventually I grew my hair out (as I currently am).

Laura, maybe you just need your hubby to get in touch with the indie rock star within him ;)

I have to say the preference among so many men for blonde hair is just sad to me. I love having dark hair (not that I could be blonde anyway).

I have always heard the theory that men like your hair the way it was when you met and started dating...part of the attraction I suppose.

I am no real help here, when my husband and I met I had my hair pixie short and he LOVES my hair short , even today!! I have grown it long several times and I always hear... "I Love your hair short, so fashionable and classy"...so maybe truth in that theory!!
Good luck Laura...I have kept my hair short for my man ...perhaps you and hubby can compromise:)

Good to know I am not alone! Taylor, I wonder if you hear this from clients a lot? Women whose husbands want them to have long hair?

Honestly, I just can't go back to longer hair right now. The thought of a lengthy and painful growing-out process (not actual pain, just psychic pain as my hair would constantly annoy me) makes me cringe.

But I don't mind going blond. More upkeep and $$$, but I don't mind. It does bum me out that my husband looks back on my long, blond hair nostalgically -- makes me want to ask, what's wrong with how I am right now?? I think I'm pretty good as is

I think that RoseandJoan has a good point - I don't think there's a need to overreact unless he's said that he really dislikes your current look (and even then I'd want to figure out why and what it is). Some of it may be nostalgia or just him just making conversation, not something that has a great deal of importance to him. Even then, this is different for everyone and every relationship, but I would say if you're happy with your hair the way it is, then that's the most important thing.

Most men do seem to like long hair (except my dad - he's always preferred short hair, which is good luck for my mom since she's never had long hair in her life!). My husband does, and I know it. I've had long hair during some of our relationship and I may again sometime, but right now I like my hair short, I like how easy it is to take care of, and it's what I've chosen to do. It might not be his first ever preference for me, but he likes it well enough and he knows it makes me happy.

I do wonder about those women who have long, blah, always-thrown-in-a-ponytail hair into their 40s and 50s for the single reason that their husband likes long hair. Practically anything would look more cared-for and up-to-date than those non-styles, and honestly I think their husbands would like it better too - sometimes guys (OK, everyone) can get fixated on one thing and not really think about the larger context of what they want.

My husband prefers long hair too. He's very diplomatic, but subtle hints tell me he likes it longer. I grew it back out in the last year or two, mostly for myself but also for him. I wouldn't wear my hair longer if I didn't like it that way, but his opinion is important to me. He asks my opinion on his hair also.

I don't think it's necessarily nostalgia, but some men do have a fear of their wives growing older and ending up with grandma hair. I think as long as it's still sensual and attractive, length doesn't really matter. What men really fear is frumpiness.

I thought I was the only one! My Mr pines for the long blonde hair I had when we first met too. It is longish at the moment but only because I've been too lazy to get it cut, maybe when I get it cut I'll go back to blonde as a compromise. He has very few feelings either way about my style so I do like to factor in his likes sometimes - although he has a thing for turtlenecks and with my short necked big bossomed self that is never going to happen!

I agree with Tarzy. Isn't it just a bit of a nostalgia trip for him? You can't go back to those days and he knows that and that's what nostalgia is all about - happy memories. Do you need to have a chat about if he likes your hair now? And if he'd prefer something else, a chat about why that might not work?

I trust my DH's opinion and I want him to like how I look. If he doesn't then either I need to listen to him, or re-educate him (he was v against knee length skirts/dresses for me until I knew enough to make it work and show him - he's a complete convert now!).

Laura, your hubby has shown a slight preference for longer hair but unless he has said 'I hate your hair short' is it really an issue.

I used to have LONG hair but it was so fine and flat that I couldn't do anything with it. It would hold a curl or any other type of volume for very long. I do have ears that stick out and if you looked at my you'd see my face, a curtain of hair and then my ears sticking out of my hair. The only thing I could do with it was pull it back into a ponytail. This caused horrible headaches b/c I had to make the ponytail holders so tight b/c they would slip out of my baby fine hair. Finally I had enough and just chopped it off into a short bob. It is time for me to get a haircut when my hair is long enough for a ponytail. I will I could pull of long, volumous, sexy hair but it doesn't work for me so my husband IS happy with my hair because I tell him he is!

My husband prefers long hair on me. I prefer short hair on him. Being engineers, we created a mathematical rule - my hair plus his hair must equal a constant

When my husband was in his 20's he had long, rocker hair - to his mid-back. He wore fringed suede vests and biker boots. He looked amazing. I wish I'd known him back then. Now, in his 50's, he would look ridiculous like that. Everyone has to move on in life.

I'm sure he supports you and thinks you're beautiful today, too!

Maya, I think that one should go in the YLF hall of fame

This is funny- just last night my bf mentioned to me that I might want to "blonde it up" when we go back to Canada in September (I have an app't for a cut with my fave stylist in my hometown). I used to highlight my hair in university and while I loved the look, it got too expensive to maintain after I graduated.

I guess I'm lucky in that the length doesn't really seem to matter to him, though. He probably has a slight preference for it long, but not excessively so.

Blonde short hair is a great compromise here, I think.

I get this all the time from my hubby. When we met I had very long (to the small of the back/top of the bum), very blonde hair. Since then it's been lots of different colors; browns, reds, highlights etc, and increasingly gotten shorter (shortest to the tops of the shoulders). Everytime I come home from the salon I get “no blonde?” I kept telling him I would go back to blonde for our wedding, which I did back in Dec. It took 1 year of growing out, and 6 months of slowly lightening the color to get it back to the blonde he liked. It worked great for the wedding, and everyone thought I had extensions in, but no matter how well I care for it, blonde gives my hair a lot of abuse. So now it’s back to shorter and brown. I keep telling him, if he wants it that long and blonde again, he has to pay for the upkeep and be prepared to wait longer while I get ready.

Hi Laura, first of all, you look gorgeous with short hair. I really liked it when you went blonde last time (6 months ago maybe?). I agree it is probably nostalgia on his part (lol @ Queenie).
To me short hair is not the same as pulled back hair. I think in general pulled back hair looks more feminine, while short hair looks edgier (and I am talking about good examples of those, not a ratty ponytail). The other day I saw a beautiful woman with her hair pulled back in a bun, and I was thinking that it wouldn't have the same effect with a short haircut. Not sure if the pulled back hairstyle stops looking good after certain age.
Anyway, sorry for rambling! Another vote for short and blonde.
