Thanks everyone! Really I got it mostly for wearing around the house. I went in to find some comfy but not clingy shorts because for the past too many to mention summers I've been wearing these baggy knit shorts and I noticed last year that they are so baggy the rear view looks like I'm wearing a diaper!

And I thought since I purged the worst things in my closet and was attempting to look better, why shouldn't that extend to looking better around the house? Why should I buy pretty things for public view and make my poor husband and my poor self see me all weekend wearing diapers? I think we both deserve better!

So I went in to find just nicer knit shorts but decided the skort was just as comfy, cuter, and way more flattering. So now I will feel better as I do laundry and lounge around...and if I happen to run a quick errand I will still feel okay. Which never would have happened in the diapers!

I have the version from a few years ago, and trust me, nobody will know you're wearing a skort. This is one of those summertime survival items when you know you'll be outdoors a lot and need something that will be OK if it gets sweaty and/or dirty. It works with a variety of footwear and is pretty darn versatile. As far as the gear vs. fashion dilemma, I'd say it falls somewhere in between.
Peri, I'm not the expert, but here's my take on it:

To me, gear has two meanings. The first is those things that are straight up workout wear. They are specialized clothes with a special purpose. You won't see a lot of folks sporting yoga pants and running shoes in WIWs because they are gear. Multi-pocket utility shorts and tevas? Gear. Hot weather survival outfits? A-okay fab even though gear. That kind of gear isn't a no-go (see Ariadne's post on her tennis shoes here). It just isn't necessary a component that you would use to highlight your unique style. (Notice all the qualifications--this isn't a hard and fast rule.)

The second is more what I see Rae using it as. Gear can describe things that have a technical aspect to them, which can be used as a feature that highlights a person's style. So, for example, a reflective coating can make an item technically gear, but if worn in a very fashion forward way highlighting a person's sci-fi warrior style, it would be gear in the second way. Rae doesn't wear outfits that look like they were plucked from the shelves of REI entirely unaltered (gear 1), but she does wear her REI waterproof trench, which has definite gearish features and somewhat gearish styling, as part of her otherwise entirely urban outfits (gear 2).

This is a skirt with a silent short rather than a skort Who am I trying to kid?

Gear is functional clothing IMO Peri but as sporty style is on trend right now the lines between gear and regular clothing is very blurry. The skirt you have linked to may have been intended for gear but would look totally appropriate on casual days where I live (I'm thinking of a loosely tailored tee and sandals with a cross body bag)..

Perfect for MOTG (with small children that require that you to bend over a lot!) and for traveling or sitting in bleachers (to avoid revealing more than you intend to).
I have no skorts and don't miss having this item, but I can see one might fill a niche for some.

K...what is "gear"? Like workout clothes or something sporty?

Just curious because I've seen some describe part of their style as gear. Like I think I've seen Rae refer to her clothes that way and she has a style I admire.

I'm casual arty classic...not even close to sporty! The skort will hit the casual but not the rest of me. But I've said before...summer where I live is less about style and more about survival. I'll basically wear anything that keeps me functional enough to not snap everyone's head off from my heat exhaustion.

I think this type of "hidden" skort is perfectly fine for casual/athletic activities in hot weather. It looks like a regular skirt, so no one will know your secret!

I'm not a fan of the skort that is a skirt in front/short in back style, but I have a couple of these skirts-with-a-short-built-in style skirts. I've also heard them referred to as tennis skirts and running skirts. They are great for really active days. I consider mine gear and wear them when the weather is ridiculously hot and I'm more or less wearing my swimsuit. Most of them are athletic fabrics, though, so I suspect they'll get a "gear" rating from the forum.

Oh dear, didn't mean to offend! I just keep thinking of that Ellen commercial for JCP when they were asking her why she was wanting to return something and she kept saying "it's a skort". So funny.

Peri you are on a roll today. I think this is a great item - I have one! I think this is a very modern take on the skort and there should be no gasping involved except to say "YLF"

I'm talking about the kind that is a skirt all the way around, with mesh shorts underneath...a sports/running skirt. Like this:

http://athleta.gap.com/browse/.....=903951012

Cause I bought it!

I know the horrible skirt in front, shorts in back nightmare of years past is verboten. But this seems cute, like it might be okay to wear off the tennis court in some casual setting. Not that I play tennis!

Just wondering because this is more flattering on me than actual shorts, and still sporty looking so my gym shoes don't look so out of place. But I don't want to think of people gasping "oh good lord, she's wearing a skort!!"
