Thanks for all your answers! I get it now. I think I will leave mine neatly folded at the bottom of a blue bin in my basement, until further notice. I am indeed veering in a different direction, I don't know yet where to, but where I am now getting there doesn't include tailored fit shirts.

I think the looser fit shirts are more trendy right now, but a fitted button down is classic. They never really go out of style. I have a few, and I wore one of them just a couple of days ago, with a knit shell over top and slouchy, ripped boyfriend jeans, and I felt plenty current. I would say that if you wear your fitted shirts with other items that feel very of-the-now, you won't feel out of date.

Janet said it best and I concur. I have a lot of them in my closet and I still reach for them for meetings. They are work appropriate and I feel great wearing them. You don't want to reach for a trendy piece for meetings because only you will know you are trending (all the other people will just think you are sloppy).

I love 'em...I have two from brooks bros that make and excellent under layer and provide structure to the knits I wear. I got rid of my br ones only because I love bb no iron shirts.

I also have black and white slim fitting button up shirts from Anne Fontaine...also wear all the time. The white is too slim to wear on its own with current styles, great under jackets and cardies. Less so with the black but I tend to wear toppers.

Long answer, so not out of style, but you need to figure out if they have a place in your closet since you wanted to go toward a more interesting less conventionally flattering direction.

Not out of style at all Anna. Just not the current trend which is a looser fit.

They might not be the most trendy, current item, but they are classics and worth keeping if the fit and color is great, and you have room for them.

I have a small selection, and even though they were not heavily worn last year, I'm keeping them. I have black, white, and two colors that are very good on me (emerald green and vibrant blue), and they all fit me well. I keep them for layering under sweaters, mostly. But they are classic, and since they fit well and I like them, I hang onto them. It's not always easy for me to find button-fronts that don't gape at the bust, so to me, it's worth it to keep these around.

I had a really hard time moving to the very fitted shirts. I find the softer fabrics that drape to work better for me so it was an easy transition back. Having said that, the more fitted shirts do look nice under a suit and I imagine they would be better for layering under a vest or sweater.

I am very much a proponent of wearing what you love these days. If the fitted shirt works well for you, then combine it with other more current pieces and enjoy.

I think a button down is a classic. But the trick is finding one that fits. For me I have problems across the chest and short arms. It's a special button down that can solve both issues. I am actually thinking of having them made the wy men have shirts made

I don't personally wear them, but I never have. They are a classic, and can be useful for layering. They are appropriate in many situations. I imagine they suit your shape and style. I might put them at the back of your closet for now, but I would not purge.

I am sorry to throw all these questions at you lately, I guess I am re-examining my style and clothes. I have two BR fitted tailored button downs (one black and one lilac), and I sense they have become out of style this year.
In Angie's recent ensemble post, the shirt should not be tailored.
What do you think?
