I like homemade face mask that contains bananas because it stimulate the production of collagen and firm my skin. I recommend it for dry skin type.

Recipe: Boil one tablespoon of full-fat milk in the pan and let it cool. When the skin forms on the surface, scoot it up with a spoon. Mash the banana and add one whole egg, one tablespoon of honey and the milk. Spread the mixture all over the face and rinse with warm water after 10 minutes.

For gentle cleansing: a handful of quick-cooking oatmeal moistened with warm water, and rubbed gently into damp skin, then rinsed with lots of warm water.
For exfoliating: a spoonful of baking soda, moistened, rubbed and rinsed as above.
For exfoliating very dry skin: baking soda moistened with olive or coconut oil instead of water; rinse and pat dry.
For moisturizing: coconut or virgin olive oil applied to warm damp skin, patted dry.
For moisturizing and protecting skin in extremely cold, windy weather: heat coconut or olive oil over low heat; add a small amount of beeswax and stir until melted; pour into a dry, sterilized small jar. Can be used as balm for face, hands, lips. A small amount of zinc oxide (diaper ointment) can be added for healing, soothing, and sun-protective properties.
For toning skin: raw, organic apple cider vinegar diluted with warm water, applied to clean skin, rinsed and patted dry.
For sore or swollen eyes, or sunburn: cold (brewed, damp) tea bags applied to closed eyes or skin.
For canker sores: a cold, damp chamomile tea bag, applied to canker sore as a compress.
I use and prefer all of these to the manufactured versions--easy, safe, and every bit as effective as expensive products.

I am loving a drop or two of Saffola oil to seal my facial moisturizer every night and morning. I use a handful of Saffola on my legs and arms after showering. $2.48 a quart at Winco. When I feel like getting fancy, then organic sunflower oil in a dark glass bottle. I am an esthetician and especially interested in skincare and health.

I use coconut oil to remove all makeup except eye makeup. (I was using it for that at bedtime, but it left a film on my eyes, which worried me about potential infection).

After I use the coconut oil, I use Dr. Bronner's peppermint soap all over my face, being sure to very carefully rinse the eye area. It removes all of the eye makeup and doesn't sting if I am careful to rinse, then go over my eyes with a warm wet washcloth, before opening my eyes.

I very rarely have pimples these days (which plagued me all of my life until two years ago, when I started avoiding any skin or hair products with silicone/dimethicone). If I get one, I use Shea Moisture African Black Soap that I buy at Target, in bar form. The pimple is usually gone within 12-24 hours.

For a while I cleaned my face with the oil method, using a mix of grape seed oil with a bit of castor oil (which is more astringent). It worked well when I lived somewhere with very hard water that was drying out my skin, but more recently, it caused some acne.

Egg whites for face masks.

Yogurt/milk for acne breakouts.

Coconut oil or castor oil for cleansing.

I've also made my own deodorant using coconut oil, baking soda, some essential oil, and my favourite hand cream, but stopped using it because baking soda is pretty abrasive, unfortunately.

I shared this on a different thread but brown sugar, honey and coconut oil-- I mix them in a plastic tub and depending on my mood add perfume or essential oils or nothing at all (it smells good on its own) and use as a scrub in the shower. I've never tried olive oil but I bet it would work, too.
I can't recommend this enough

I've been experimenting with an exfoliating cleanser made from equal parts oat flour and almond flour, ground up in the food processor so that it is very fine. Then I add a little powdered milk, a bit of almond oil, and a bit of honey and blend again. I use a small bit of the mixture (maybe 1/4 t.?) mixed with some warm water every morning and evening, and press it into my face for a few minutes, adding more water as necessary. Then I rinse it off.

For anyone familiar with the Dr. Hauschka Cleansing Cream, this is my version of it. So far it seems to be working pretty well, though it is more drying than the Dr. H stuff. I might add more oil next time I make it.

masks:

soothing moisturizing: 1 tsp yogurt, 1 tsp (raw) honey, 1T ground oats

brightening: 1T sake kasu (sake lees, at the japanese grocery), scant T water or sake, dash honey , mix until spreadable. may need to loosen with a bit more water or a few drops of olive or avocado oil

lip mask/scrub: 1T brown sugar with enough honey to bind

physical exfoliants are too harsh on my skin, diy or otherwise.

For exfoliation, good old fashioned baking soda mixed with Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, and plain aloe vera gel is a great moisturizer when it's humid outside.

I use the Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser when I need to wash my face but do not have to remove makeup: http://www.cetaphil.com/gentle-skin-cleanser

When I remove my makeup, I use Dessert Essence Sea Kelp Face Wash: https://www.desertessence.com/.....-face-wash

I use equal parts fresh lemon juice, honey, and olive oil to make a concoction that I leave on my face for 10 - 15 minutes. Seems to help brighten dull skin.

I also make a mask from bentonite clay and water. This one is good when traveling as a little clay doesn't take up much space.

I'll have to try your lemon juice and sugar scrub. Sounds like something that I would like.

I haven't tried this, but this plastic surgeon on PBS said mask of plain yogurt, orange juice and lemon juice. That seemed like a good one to me, so long as the acids of the citrus aren't too strong for your skin (they could me). The citrus has to be fresh, so you get the vitamin C benefits. I like vit C things for the skin.

If you donate money, you get dvds of his show, a book, and the cool thing - a little card for the grocery store for things to make skincare stuff with and to eat that are good for your complexion.

Personally, I don't find it very useful when DIY skincare recipes require a list of uncommon things you have to go out of your way to get (kaolin clay, frankincense essential oil, stuff like that). I prefer recipes with things that can be picked up cheaply at any grocery store and work well for skin. For example, the simple sugar and 100% lemon juice scrub combo works wonders for my skin (much better than most store bought cleansers have worked for me). That is my favorite. It leaves my skin clean and so smooth, it works so well I have to be extra gentle when scrubbing. What DIY skincare recipe using common, cheap food items has worked very well for you? Please share
