Great thinking Column. I have very little idea on trends. I kind of don't notice a lot of them. I like Smittie's thinking. I changed to do that myself, some years ago now, and got used to being called "Imelda Marcos". It doesn't make me feel bad or guilty any more. I am also trying to wear my clothes well and think about the environment, within reason without inciting too much guilt in myself.
I'm with Sal in that I wonder if the Southern Hemisphere influences the Northern a bit now, I mainly thank Australia for this,in a good way- the beachy Australian lifestyle is loved around the world similarly to that of other hot places I think. So Australian designers, and some NZ ones too, can be taken notice of in the more populous Northern Hemisphere.

I like the dress!! I have sugar eye for midi dresses and skirts and always have. I like them worn in a classic way with delicate sandals or heels or tall boots or in a more trendy way with sneakers, slides or ankle boots.

I agree with all the postings so far - and agree it is changing rapidly and much more of a zig zag now.

Being in the Southern Hemisphere sometimes trends arrive here at the same time as in the North, sometimes a season later. And possibly we start some too.....

Constant drops, resort wear, the rise of fast turnaround retailers like H&M and Zara, the rise of stylists, street style and ïnfluencers" means that the high/traditional fashion shows whilst still important, are not the only source of influence.

And some fashions do stay around forever now (high low tops, skinny jeans, ankle boots being a few that spring to mind).

I do a mix of following the trends, being classic and occasionally fashion forward, and occasionally dated too I suspect. I do try and wear something classic or even unfashionable with more trendy pieces to make it more current - it does sometimes work.

I think when you are true to yourself it does always work.

Thanks, everyone, for your generous responses. I am in the rural Midwest, so we do “slow fashion” here. That said, the trends do arrive, and people embrace them eventually.

I really like the “fashionable person” mindset. At the very least, I feel best when I am put together and carry myself as though I am tall, with confidence. So even though my outfits might be “out there” by others` standards, I can pretend I don`t notice. Fake it til I make it comes to mind!

I did take the pictured dress to a seamstress to inquire about length. After pinning it up, we both agreed the dress lost the slimming quality that the long drape collapsing back on the body provides. I remember when I first wore cropped pants with ankle booties ala Ange`s outfit formula a few years back. Everyone at work stared at me like I was wearing “floods” (remember that despised word)? Then the next year, everybody had that combo on. I suspect the same will be true of the long midi.

So thankful for the YLF community—Angie`s brainchild and Greg`s technological wizardry!

Huh? This hemline isn’t being worn in the US? I have been wearing that length, but I live in New York State, (not the city). I don’t think it’s my age (50’s) because the young social workers and teachers in the building wear that length also (probably late 20’s to mid 30’s age range). Which part of the US do you live in? I think there is a bicoastal wave to fashion, or maybe it would be better to say that it fans out from big cities towards midsize cities and then to more rural areas. There are big cities in the Midwest as well, like Chicago....and i believe fashion washes out from there as well...

The fashion that is adopted in a given area is likely to have a regional twist, and this is probably secondary to style preferences, weather, the subculture, etc. Some trends are more relevant in an urban setting whereas others work for suburban, or rural settings and whatever is in between.

I moved to New York State after living for one year in Los Angeles. In Los Angeles, everyone in my workplace dressed in the trendiest styles, and wore beautiful designer clothing which they frequently updated. They shopped at the consignment stores and shops where Hollywood stars sent their castoff, worn only once, wardrobe. (I mean this literally). In Central New York, they are slower adopters of the latest trends. The clothing style is more conservative, and the need to stand out by making a statement with a look is less prevalent, probably because there are fewer people. I am at a point where I wear what I like and not what I don’t, and I am not worried too much anymore about how trendy something is as much as how happy I feel when wearing the item.

I am happy to see longer hemlines finally, but still not finding a whole lot of them in CASUAL styles in my area. I think the "dowdy" thing can be mitigated with current styling -- edgy/trendy footwear, jackets, and accessories.

More and more, while I always have an eye on the trends, I'm feeling at peace with dressing to please myself regardless of what is trending. I will try to keep things up to date with a piece or two that keeps a look current, but I'm more concerned with looking "current" and "me" (with a moniker that includes a bit of sophisticated badass) than I am with looking "trendy."

I love the new midis I've been seeing. As as matter of fact, I've been casually in search of the perfect midi slip dress. I actually consider the midi the opposite of dowdy, because you don't see them. I see them as a breath of fresh air and sometimes even edgy depending how it is styled.

I don't really think it's about the length of the dress, but more about owning the look. Then, it will never be seen as "dowdy".

What Smittie said. I wear something if I like it. If I am the only person then I don't really care. Maybe I am seen as strange, frumpy, cool, fashionable, trendy setter, you name it ...... I travel a lot and I have found that different places have different fashions. I also find different areas of a city have different fashions. Montreal (where I am now) seems to have more cutting edge and riskier fashion. Where I live the fashion is fleece and more fleece.

How do the rest of you handle wearing fashon that no one else “gets?”

One thing that has helped me is to have my sense of self be tied to being a 'fashionable person'. I think this is called 'a personal brand' nowadays Because my self definition is 'fashionable person', that label gives me some fortitude to go out in the world and wear 'dowdy' things like midi skirts and boots. Also, I am allowed to make fashionable mistakes, to own a lot of shoes, and to talk about clothes in public (men talk sports; I talk fashion), without being hard on myself.

I think it zig-zags. Sure there is trickle down from the runway shows, but then designers get a lot of inspiration from street style.

Since this past summer was generally a good dress season (I got one much like yours) I think we will see more worn IRL across the board S/S 2019.

Back in the day, it traveled from Europe to the east coast to the big cities to the smaller towns etc. We always went to Chicago around Christmas when I was a kid, and without fail the fashions seen in the windows would be in Indianapolis the next year. But now, with the internet and Europe not being the only source of fashion trends, it’s not as unidirectional or straightforward.

I'm a weirdo or a freak, depending on whether you talk to my mom or my sister; so I guess I've always been wearing things that most people around me just don't get. I guess I was just born wired this way, because it's never really bothered me much (except for my sister's wedding, because reasons). Now that I'm closing in on 50 and my hair is quite white, I figure I'm at an age when it's ok to be eccentric LOL

As for a timeline of trends, it used to be that fashion week happened and the trends trickled down very slowly to the mainstream. These days? I'm not sure how it works, because fashion week happens and 13 days later Zara has the imitators on the racks, with "new" trends appearing twice a week (which means that we're probably recycling trends every 20 weeks now instead of the old standard of every 20 years). We also have "influencers" that can seemingly make a trend appear out of nowhere, and I'm just so confused about what's "hip" & "cool" and what's not, that I really can't keep up.

I've always thought fashion trends start first in Paris and then just spreading widely like sunrays in all directions, on all the continents!:-) But later discovered all these Fashion Weeks in all the biggest cities around the world, and I just can't put them in a timeline..:-((

ETA: I mean a timeline is kind of obvious but a (trend) novelty one? Not so much. seems like all the fashion houses are comming up with everything as they please and not careing one of another's trends at all.

Interesting question - and does it all start in Europe and not say, New York? Pretty sure it starts at the coasts and works inward, as cultural movement has always tended to do.

I was always under the impression fashion trends started in Europe , made its way to the East Coast runways , then went to the street interpretations and trickled to the big cities and the streets of each had their own spin on the trends ...East Coast vs West Coast , each being a bit different because of weather , and of course California being rather casual.

I could be totally wrong on this. But it seemed to me by the time California got the trend ...or fashion of the moment down ...poof gone , something completely new trending from Europe and East Coast .

I would love Angie and others thoughts on this .

This question is a bit tongue-in-cheek, as my guess is fashion doesn`t really start in one place—but what do I know!

Here`s the issue: I bought two lovely jersey midi dresses from Boden this fall with skirts that fall below the fullest part of my calf. These are loooong midis that close the gap with fitted booties. I love them.

But they haven`t come to my fashion environment yet—or even much to the U.S., so I feel a little dowdy with everyone else showing legs. While I love statement fashion, I`m usually a trend follower instead of leader. YLF has put me a bit ahead of the U.S. curve.

So my question is: When will European—or at least British—fashion trends hit the U.S...if they ever will? How do the rest of you handle wearing fashon that no one else “gets?” Here`s the length I`m talking about on a RT dress: https://www.shopbop.com/tilda-.....edid=42352

Here is one of the Boden dresses I bought; I can`t seem to find the other: http://www.bodenusa.com/en-us/.....rsey-dress
