Scarlet, I'm not sure what it is about Persil but it seems to get clothes super clean and fresh smelling. Even really nasty stuff like my husband's icky white sports socks. My mother-in-law who is a good german hausfrau (she even irons socks & underwear!) and a laundry maven recommended it to me years ago.

I've done some work work in a museum textile lab, so that's definitely affected how I view my everyday laundry.

It's most important to avoid unnecessary friction and unnecessary heat, so I wash almost all my things in cold water on the gentle cycle, and generally hang them to dry. (Heat breaks down spandex, and I've found that most of my things last a lot longer when I don't put them in the dryer.)

The actual detergent I use can vary, but I prefer to avoid optical brighteners and like additives. For less sensitive things (like jeans) I'll use whatever is around - on gentle cycle, cold water. But for silks, fine woolens, etc (protein-based fibers) I use a product called Orvus, which was actually designed as a horse shampoo. (You have to have very soft water to use it, though. )

I'm probably fussier than most, but I find that it helps keep my things nice for a very long time. There are a lot of people who swear by dry-cleaning their denim to keep it from fading. It works, but I don't like the chemicals.

I use liquid Tide in our top-loading washer. I'm more persnickety about how I dry clothes than what detergent I use. It's not uncommon for our laundry room to be festooned with drying bras, panties and assorted other items; I have to remember to take down the decorations before the electrician/plumber/etc. arrives. :O

I have a front loader & I use a bunch of different ones depending on what I'm washing! I'm a little obsessed with laundry, I admit. For most of my son's clothes (he's got some skin issues with fragrances) and undies, I use All Free & Clear liquid. For cold wash (denim etc), I use Tide 2X Ultra Cold Water liquid (rated to be one of the top ones according to consumer reports). For regular clothes I use seventh generation powdered detergent (love the white flower & bergamot citrus scent). For towels, sheets & really dirty stuff, I use Persil powder (yes, I actually bring it back in my suitcase from Germany).

Woolite has a product for black clothing - I haven't tried it yet but I've been curious because they say it keeps them from fading. Sounds like something you could use, Tara

Right now I'm using Vaska Herbadetergent because it was on sale. It smells nice. Usually I buy the cheapest kind, generic or its equivalent. I think I asked here once and almost no one thought more expensive detergent is really better for your clothes. I wonder if that's true. I do use Woolite for hand washables, including sweaters.

I think the biggest mistake for me is tossing stuff in the dryer that shouldn't go in there. I'm noticing more and more how many care labels state to 'lay flat to dry'.

I have gotten in the habit of using Tide. Just yesterday I had a thought that perhaps using only cold water would be good because the hot water tank does not hold especially clean water. I heard a plumber say that if you saw what was in your hot water heater, you would not cook with it. I do not know how much truth there is to that.

I asked this at the tail end of Sveta's post, but thought I'd start a new thread to get more responses.

With my recent new purchases of nicer tops, I'm terrified of ruining them in the wash. I'm using Tide powder detergent right now (in an old top loader, which probably won't be replaced in the foreseeable future.)

Can anyone recommend a good detergent that's not harsh on clothes?
