Shevia's another warm-climate example who wears brilliant but simple (mostly unaccessorized) outfits. In her case, footwear is a star player, and that won't work for you, but belts or cuff bracelets might take on a similar role.

Another question that occurred to me. In the summer, do you have a "star player" in each ensemble? This is where I have freqently fallen down. My tops are too ordinary in their cuts (or my bottoms are) and/or in colour or pattern. In the fall, a jacket or a scarf can be a "statement" piece, making the outfit more interesting. But in summer, we have to rely on something in the top or bottom itself to do that work. As someone who has a tendency to buy very ordinary, classic essential pieces (as if everything were a layering piece) that gives me a canvas without any interest, really. I need to focus on buying more "statement" piece pants, skirts, tops for summer wear.

As others have mentioned, don't forget your belt, bag, and shoes! Those can really add interest. Such as... a 1.5" distressed pewter belt (this is what I'm wearing with everything right now), cute sandals or flats, a nice clutch or satchel....

Most of my summer outfits are pretty simple (for casual life anyway), dress + watch + bag + shoes + earrings of some sort; and like sheiva, I think I still have plenty to pick from You don't need to be ALGO to have outfit capsules!

Just to reiterate what Suz says, I consider an outfit a top, bottom, watch, bag and shoes. That is all I wear most summer days and still feel there is plenty to choose.

I didn't read unfrumped's post before I asked this...most of it she addressed also! But thanks of the suggestions.

Shedev...funny! But you are right...why would I really wear the tops I don't quite like? I guess calling my favorites a capsule is as good a method as any.

Lisa...amen! I enjoy cooler weather clothes so much more, and do feel like I can be more creative. Summer I just try to survive.

Gaylene...good suggestions. But shoes limit me as well, so that limits most other kinds of bottoms. But I'm glad you can!

Suz...I guess most of the time I feel okay about what I'm wearing this summer. Okay, but better than past years at least, a lot thanks to
YLF. I don't feel finished really, and I think that's what I meant about not feeling like I have outfits, because they are so simple. I will look for Soobee posts. But you are right...how much can I really do when it's too hot for anything but single layers. I'm looking forward to Fall shopping...but we are not reliably cool until early November so I will have to wait!

Argh. I just lost a huge long post.

Okay. Starting over.

When it comes to outfits, Angie, as always, has some terrific blog posts so you can search the archives. Just remember that what counts as an outfit depends very much on your style and your needs. There are minimalists and maximalists, and everything in between.

If you feel "finished" in what you're wearing, chances are it counts as an outfit to you. If you don't, and that's part of what drove you to YLF, then that's another story.

It's tough to layer a lot in the summer, or at any time when you live in a warm climate. So the outfits that a northern woman might put together could seem impossible to you. Add to that the fact that you work from home. Many of us rarely wear toppers at home.

An example of a forum member who always manages to look "complete" even though she lives in a hot climate, is Soobee. If you look closely, you'll see that she practically always wears the same basic uniform -- shorts and a top. But what that woman does with colour, accessories, and footwear will blow you away! Even though she's wearing essentially the same clothes, she manages to inject fun and variety into her outfits.

But that is only one way of doing it. A super minimalist might do it though the avant guard cuts.

As for capsules, once again, Angie's many blog posts might be helpful if you haven't read them. Here's one, and here's another. There are more.

But having pointed you to them in such a la-di-da manner, I have to confess that although I had read these posts, and continued to read them assiduously whenever they came out (and re-read them, too), and although I thought I had a pretty good handle on how to mix and match my fairly small, colour coordinated wardrobe -- I still didn't know what the heck I was doing and only now do I feel as if I am almost getting a handle on this!!

The truth is, it takes practice -- even if you do have some intuitive ability. Practice and careful discernment of your real needs. This can be really tricky if your needs are varied, you've recently undergone a life transition, you're about to undergo one, you've recently moved to a different part of the country, you have a bunch of different jobs or roles, or you travel a lot. Pretty much all of those describe me, so no wonder I have had a rough time figuring it all out.

The main question is, do you feel good about what you are wearing? Does it feel stylish to you? Then there you go! You are set. But if you don't feel great, thinking in capsules will help you make more sense of your wardrobe and leave you less panicked the next time a regularly occurring event comes up and as always, you have "nothing to wear."

You've described my closet tendencies as well, but I think Lisa has nailed it when she calls it "just a very large, one formula capsule."

On ufrumped's thread, Angie makes a good point about including some variety in a capsule by playing with silhouettes, shapes, and pattern as well as color. Maybe introduce a couple of different bottoms in the "grey pant" capsule such as a skirt, a pair of crops, or a patterned or colored jean to pair with your chosen tops? Then add a possible topper if you need to cover up a sleeveless top because of the AC, preferably one that works with everything else in the capsule? I'm thinking this would be a good way of helping me break out of my uniform summer look which is almost identical to yours, except for the jewelry.

My summer wear is much simpler than my fall wear. I add interest to my outfits with printed tops. My fall wear gets all the fun layering. It sounds like you have an outfit formula that is working very well for you. And maybe it's just a very large, one formula capsule?

All this talk about capsules lately has left me a little at loose ends. Especially Day Vies lovely pictures of her capsule. I started wondering if my daily wear could even be considered outfits...they sure lack the layers and details of the pictures I'm seeing.

My summer "uniform"...pants, T shirt or sleeveless top, jewelry. That's it. Since I'm 95% solids, most tops go with most pants. Does that make my "grey pants capsule" as: grey pants, just about every top I own, the end?

Either a) I'm a fantastic capsule maker with endless combos of simple, casual outfits ...or b) I don't have any capsules, just a way of dressing that lacks any distinguishing details that would constitute groups.

I don't know what to think!
