I agree with Maya and Angie that the "classic Ugg Style" boot isn't stylish at all. I hate them, actually. A lot of the teenage girls in my town wear them all winter long in a multitude of different colors. I really don't see how anyone would see them in the store (or online or in a magazine) and think that they would look cute with a mini skirt or that they'd be good to wear outside. We have very cold (a few days ago it was -20 with windchill) and very snowy/slushy winters. I would not want to be wearing that boot outside!

As for the other Ugg styles, I actually own the ones pictured in the top link and I love them. They're very warm and stylish.

As for Crocs and Flip Flops - I do own a couple pairs of Crocs but only for work. I work at a elderly care facility and I am on my feet all day. I have tried so many sneakers and nursing shoes, it's not even funny. Crocs are the only things that work for me. However, I own the maryjane style croc and not the traditional clog style. They're not much more fashionable but anything's better than the clog style! As for flip flops - you won't knock them when you're 9 months pregnant and can't reach (or even see) your feet. LOL then you'll be begging for a pair just so you can get out of the house. Especially in the hot, humid, summer weather.

Good point, Angie. I was purusing boots yesterday and came across some less offensive Ugg styles. The first pair you listed are exactly what I'm looking for. If they weren't so expensive, I'd nab them for my Seattle trip next week.

I hear your arguments. I'd like to qualify mine by saying that I’m only referring to the “classic Ugg style” (the one that looks like slipper), as the shoe that gets lumped into the Crocs category. There are quite a few fab Ugg styles, like these ones, that are adorable with the right outfit:

http://www.uggaustralia.com/Pr.....del=Seline

http://www.uggaustralia.com/Pr.....Swell+Tall

http://www.uggaustralia.com/Pr.....del=Totten

Ellen M – what’s your calf measurement ? I have a skinny calf too, and so do quite a few other forum members. We have found boots! We might be able to help.

Lissy, I like your gear-wearing Ugg strategy.

Emily, to answer your question, I wear them as gear (as Angie would say), NOT as anything I would consider part of my actual wardrobe. Not to mention the fact that they were gifts - not a purchase I made myself.

Just have to say I'm with Shiny on this one. I actually don't understand the strong aversion. They certainly have a puffy shape and I wouldn't call them anything above casual, but I think they can actually look quite cute with a pair of jeans, nice coat, good scarf and bag and some warm mittens.

Furthermore, as a Canadian in Ottawa (-40 sometimes each winter), I have to say that I have almost never seen a really great-shaped pair of boots that is good for that level of cold. I agree with Shiny - I find the Columbia-type boots quite ugly and clunky and they make me think "frumpy mom at the bus stop".

All that to say - I have had an extremely unsuccessful time finding boots for this winter with my small calves. I have bought a few pairs and returned them, because if they fit my calves, they were awfully uncomfy on my feet. The day before I saw this thread, I decided I'm getting some Uggs. Maybe it's a quality of having one's eye adjust to warm-weather clothing (we clearly need more here than in Seattle!), but I just don't see them as that bad, I see a lot of others as a lot worse (I wore Columbias as an extremely unstylish teenager and I can't get that image out of my head), and they just plain look warm!

To answer the original question, I am blonde with fair skin and have been planning on getting the toffee colour - they go with brown or black and balance out the colours on me.

Anne, I've been wearing them for years (at least 10 now) in the wet, slush, snow, ice, etc. The trick is you have to waterproof them first.

In fact, I had one pair that got damaged by a basement flood - completely submersed. I dried them out, and they are discolored from mildew, but they are still waterproof and I wear them occasionally, just around our backyard, like if it's muddy.

Switching subjects somewhat: anyone remember Moon boots?

I am still a little bemused by the idea of Uggs as an outdoor boot. As a child growing up in Australia, uggs were an indoor shoe - you'd use them similarly to slippers - great in Australian houses which are pretty cold in winter. [I know now about the surfie origins but I didn't know that then] My Dad would take us his muddy work boots and wear them around the house. Actually when he got called out at night he did sometimes quickly Uggs but it was to their detriment as they got all wet and soggy. I remember one guy wore them to high school but we thought that very strange.
How things have changed in 20 years!
Oh and also about 16 years ago encountered shoes that were just like crocs - they were supplied for visiting a coral island on the great barrier reef. I returned their 3 years ago and they were still being used for that.

Please don't take offense, Lissy, but if you really have "a very big aversion to Uggs", then why do you have a pair at all? As you said, there are many other warm winter boots out there.

I'm with you, Maya and Angie. I have a very big aversion to Uggs. I'm in college and I see so many girls every day wear these with really nice outfits, as if it were some kind of fashion statement. Even worse is when I see them with mini skirts. I agree that there are plenty of fashionable AND functional warm winter boots out there. I for one can stay very toasty and warm in a pair of tall suede or leather boots and nice thick socks underneath, even in the snow.
I think that my distaste for them is the fact that I see them every single day worn in such a way that its NOT just about warmth - I live in sunny California!
I do wear them as shiny described - I wear them after a long day of skiing when I take off my boots on the way to the car because I'm always freezing and sore. That's about it!

Today we had a pretty bad storm. Snow, sleet, wind, etc. On days like this, or on really cold days, I wear my Nordic-style Aerosoles boots. They are far from the most fashionable boots in the world, but they do the job and they are warm and toasty and are still not as unflattering as Uggs are. I can definitely appreciate the need for a warm pair of shoes in the winter, but I am still very skeptical that they HAVE to be Uggs. Under no circumstances am I ever going to find them cute, stylish, or appropriate even for running around on campus. Of course, my campus has a particularly high style quotient...dare I say the highest in the country! Maybe I'm a snob. Shiny, I think the way you wear them is fine...but I do wonder if they are the only shoes in the world that fulfill that job. My Aerosoles probably cost about half as much and have wonderful cushioning and warmth, and as I said, I am ALWAYS cold. Horses for courses I guess?

Try page 6 of the JCrew catalog, and page 13. Trick is to have tights or skinnies. You're going for an apres ski sort of look, not a tarty mini-skirt and bare legs plus Uggs look. I never understood that one! If it's cold enough for Uggs, then what's up with the bare legs?

Ha ha! The quintessential "Austin Winter" look, Sarah! I see it on campus a lot--a fur trimmed ski jacket and Uggs, worn with a tank top and denim mini skirt. It sort of confuses me. :D

I have La Canadienne boots and hands-down, my Uggs are MUCH warmer.

There is nothing warmer than Uggs, period. If you say otherwise, then you either wore them with socks (which defeats the purpose) or you've never owned a pair. Walking around in them in the store doesn't count - you need to get outside in the freezing cold, sockless, and wear them all day long to understand just how warm these boots are.

What's more, your feet don't sweat in them; they wick away moisture. Other boots can get too hot when worn inside, then when you go outside, your socks are sweaty and wet, and this causes your toes to freeze.

Personally (and no offense) I think the Columbia boots are ugly. I have owned such boots in the past, and find them uncomfortable - and not all that warm either. Plus you clomp, clomp, clomp in them! They're heavy. They're inflexible around the ankles. Your legs get tired in them. Whereas the Uggs are lightweight like a feather.

While I don't recommend overdosing on them and wearing them constantly, I notice Ugg-like boots in the Jcrew catalog and with the right outfit it's a very cute outdoorsy look. Like Yublocka's brother!

I think Ugg's work provided:

1) You wear them for function and practicality - such as for getting from one place to another, and you swap into indoor shoes once you get indoors. (I've been known to wear my uggs with a formal dress, to get myself from home to a holiday function in an ice storm! The uggs are swapped out for high heels immediately once indoors).

2) You wear them for an outdoor winter look, and deliberately add certain outdoorsy touches, like Yublocka's brother has done with his plaid jacket, and like the models in the jcrew catalog have done.

I really abhor the mini-skirt, bare-legs, Uggs look. However, I think uggs can look adorable with a sweater dress or sweater tunic, and chunky knit tights.

I did wear mine on the plane to iceland, but that was about practicality: they took up too much room in my luggage. I didn't actually like wearing them in the airport. My momma raised me to dress nicely when I travel, and Uggs to me are outdoor boots. Plus when I had to take them off at security, I was sockless... ewww... I forgot about that part.

Otherwise, in Iceland, I wore my leather knee-high boots whenever we were in town and there wasn't too much snow on the ground and temps were above freezing; I wore my Uggs when we were out of town driving in the country where the weather is completely unpredicatable and we were sight-seeing tromping around outdoors in snow.

As for the comment about slipping in the snow, the newest models have more traction. But the older models - which were flat as can be and had thin soles - weren't so bad, actually. Because they are so wide, they provide natural stability. They are my shoe of choice when our driveway is a solid block of ice and I must get from house to car.

I don't own flip-flops or crocs, but I will never let go of my Uggs. You'll have to pry them out of my dying hands, hee hee....

You just have to be judicious about when and how you wear them. I do agree that it is easy, like with Crocs, to go overboard and end up wearing them constantly, well past the time when weather demands warm boots, and never taking them off.

I do rue the day when Uggs became a big trend, and suddenly everyone was wearing them everywhere. However, if I was a college student, I probably would wear them all the time, to and from class. Wish they were around when I went to college. My college got tons of snow and I often froze my toes off.

I agree Maya but I'm really using these for working outside in the cold (not snow) and grocery shopping - etc. I wouldn't want to wear them to go out with friends. I have a pair of sofft brand boots that are extremely comfortable, stylish and warm (though not shearling) and I would wear those to go out in but I wouldn't want to wear them to work outside or to go to the grocery store. I would wear the shearling boots with my jeans or patagonia skirt and windbreaker or down vest. Maybe it's just the lazy side of me that sees slipping the boots on as I would slip on flipflops and crocs in the summer -which I have done. Which LC shoes can I wear to work outside or run to the grocery store, other errand. I'm open to suggestions.

As far as the shearling goes, I mainly want it for warmth to help the renaud's syndrome. A warm pair of socks would also suffice. I just need suggestions for easy and soft cozy-in-the cold comfort.

It’s no secret that I am not a fan of the Ugg in any of its forms. After Crocs, they are the ugliest shoe I’ve seen. They look like a bedroom slipper (and not a very stylish one). This is not a personal statement – it’s a completely general one. No one looks good in Uggs. I apologize for putting a damper on this thread. I’m with Maya. There are COUNTLESS more stylish boot options to keep you warm and dry. As Sarah pointed out, the Columbia boots are a step in the right direction. I hope you change your mind about purchasing Uggs (*holding thumbs*).

Forgive me for being so unsupportive, but there are loads of other warm, waterproof boots out there that are also stylish. The other day I was out with 2 of my friends who were both wearing Uggs and I was wearing my La Canadienne boots. While we were walking and talking about how cold it had become, both of them exclaimed "thank god for Uggs." I didn't say anything, but in my head I was thinking "my feet are nice and warm and I'm not wearing Uggs..."

Believe me, LC's are VERY warm. I am cold all the time but I stay pretty toasty in them. With a cozy pair of socks, they are easily the most comfortable pair of shoes I own.

I really encourage looking for something else. To me, Uggs are like the winter version of Croc and flipflops and other unstylish footwear that people use with the excuse of comfort.

Emily, yes, primarily outdoors.
Yublocka, very funny. I couldn't see the before picture but the after picture is priceless. Your brother looks like a natural in those uggs.

I'll check out the bastien.
BTW, did you see Pamela Anderson wearing them with her red baywatch bathing suit?
Thanks!

As an Ugg-supporting Aussie I truly don't mind them - except when paired with mini skirts a la Pamela Anderson! They are great to wear under jeans for uni exams in the dead of winter - otherwise you lose feeling in your toes sitting in cold, draughty halls!!!

I am truly surprised to hear people wearing them out in the snow though - I thought they'd bee too slippery!!

Has anyone ever tried Bastien boots (see their collection at Zappos). I came across them earlier this year when wanting to replace my wool-lined beige boots (still haven't replaced them but have turfed the old ones - needs to happen before next winter!)

I thought some of them looked pretty funky. They also seem sturdy and warm - I'm assuming they are built for Canadian winters! Does anyone have experience with these?

p.s. just for fun I thought I'd share a visual on how quickly you can go from looking decent to bogan with the help of uggs (and a few other bits of wardrobe). Here's my brother as a shining example:

Before: http://flickr.com/photos/yublocka/996029657/

After: http://flickr.com/photos/yublocka/3111038145/

Dee2do, So are you wanting the Uggs for wearing outside only, and then changing into other shoes once indoors? Or would you be wearing them indoors as well?

I'm not an Ugg fan at all, but I do like those Columbia boots, dee2do. I'm in Texas, but will be going to the Northwest over Christmas. My mom just told me that it could even be in the teens when we are there. I don't think my oxford booties are going to cut it!

The cold has me wanting warm shoes plus I have renaud's syndrome which means my toes hurt if they get too cold.
I tried them on a couple years ago and could not buy them because they were so big and clunky but since have decided that big and clunky is ok if they keep my feet warm outside.

I'm actually leaning toward a knock off called fitzwell - I like the taller style but they don't have my size left.
http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/45803997/c/820.html

I was also going to order these to try too, --don't know if they'll be comfortable.
http://zeta.zappos.com/product/7333270/color/949

Any other ideas are welcome! Thanks
