Thanks for enlightening me, Fabbers. I "get" cognac now and it totally makes sense. Toffee and redwood, too. You have also helped me clarify what I'm looking for and it really is cognac. How it will play with my coloring is a different question but I will have to order a pair to play with in order to see. Thanks to Una and Jackie, I think the Seychelles will work for my feet. On screen, they look closest to the color I am looking for--fingers crossed they aren't camel or toffee IRL.

Yeah... I think of cognac in leather as having also a depth of color rather than flatness... Like the difference between an oil painting and an acrylic. My new frye riding boots are a vegetable died cognac or whiskey & the color has a lot of dimension and depth. I'm surprised at Angie's sweater; I would have called that camel! So now I feel schooled on toffee!! When a boot color reaches mid brown, without much in the way of amber visible, I usually describe that as 'saddle' brown. Oxblood is a little darker and redder in my book. Some brands, like Frye, call that color redwood too. This was helpful for me... Thanks!

The first two are what I would refer to as cognac. It's such a beautiful tone. I don't wear browns but am sorely tempted to add cognac booties to my wardrobe.

I try to think in terms of the drink they are named after to get the color. Most brandy or cognac has a golden or amber undertone. Actually, if you imagine amber jewellery and a few shades darker, that would be cognac. The darker red with brown undertones are more oxblood than cognac I think.

Kelly, I just ordered these "cognac" booties (that was literally the color they were labeled) and they arrived in a sort of muddy brown, so they're going back. I'm anticipating a lot of ordering and returning to get the mid-tone warmer brown that I'm after...

Are the Pantone color names mostly only used by Pantone? The names retailers use are mainly for marketing no?

In common parlance, like Angie says, I've heard 'cognac' used to refer to a whole range of mid-tone browns.

On the light end it if it gets really pastel it's no longer cognac and instead sand or camel or toffee. On the dark end it might be 'saddle' or 'luggage' (which overlap a bit with cognac I think) but when you get into really deep espresso or chocolate brown (think coffee bean color) it's definitely not cognac anymore.

Anyways that's what I've been assuming, wrongly or rightly, lol.

I've been wondering about this too, so thanks for bringing it up!

I've looked at all the booties below, thinking about a cognac (or similar) color. I think the warm (but not too light or yellowy) tone would be a nice counterpoint to my blues and blacks. But then I wonder if I'd find it hard to bring in a similar tone higher up in my outfits unless I get a similarly colored belt or bag… I don't want to get into buying a bunch more things to make one new closet addition work!

I'm confused on this too. On my monitor the bj1111 Pantone color swatches for Cognac look almost Mauve. And what about the color "Luggage" ? I see a lot of handbags with the color name Luggage. Is it acceptable to mix these shades up on one outfit? For example cognac boots with a luggage handbag or belt and toffee sweater and camel coat?

All booties are a shade of cognac - some lighter and some darker. Whiskey, Gin, Scotch - take your pick.

Toffee is different. MUCH lighter than cognac, but darker and less yellow then Camel.

Dark brown is darker than #3.

Exhibit A below is toffee:

according to pantone...

toffee vs cognac

toffee is darker, richer with less of a pinky hue.

I can't tell if they are cognac or brown, so I'm leaning towards a dark cognac/red-brown, lol.

Is it the same as toffee? I'm on the look out for a low heeled bootie and would like to try something along the lines of cognac. Do these qualify? I love Angie's Prada chelseas but would like something at a lower price point. Suggestions welcome. Thanks!
