I'm most definitely with Joy. GLASSES are really pricey! And then jeans and coats. I will very occasionally spend a lot on a suit or dress or separate item, but in the overall scheme, I don't spend as much on these items. And I have pretty much frozen my collection of earrings. I SYC my earring collection and always find something I had "forgotten" that I had!

Dress pants for sure. I find pants hard to fit and I really try hard to get dress pants to fit me well.

I suppose winter coats too, but those I don't really even care how they look so I would classify that more as gear.

Marley, you are very brave doing the spreadsheet... I would be scared to see how much my "bargains" add up to... I did one year get a special card from a retailer because I had spent so much during the year which made me keel over since this is where I usually whip in to buy tshirts for both myself and my husband (OK he might get a couple of pairs of shorts a year too)... but given I don't do their shoes, bags, suits, skirts etc, that was quite sobering. In response to one of Angie's posts the other day of what do you like in your favourite outfits, I also wrote down what I purge most - now THAT was very interesting...

Interesting question! I am in the middle of "copying" Kate's excell spreadsheet and recording all of my clothes, footwear, accessories, etc. and figuring out CPW. So far, it looks as though I spend more on accessories - shoes and handbags - than I do on clothes. For clothes, I spend more on jeans than anything else - as well, as bras. However, the CPW for jeans and bras is waaaaay low - so that's a good thing - I think it means I've got my wardrobe "needs/likes" figured out. Still trying to figure out the handbags and shoes though. Unfortunately, I've got several very expensive handbags and a couple of pair of expensive shoes that I've never worn. Gulp - I LOVE them too - can't figure out why I haven't worn them - maybe bought them for my fantsay life?

I spend the most on shoes and boots, for sure.... probably coats after that. Until yesterday, the most I had spent on a handbag was $70. I've now broken that and hope to buy nicer ones as I slowly replace my cheapies. So bags are third in line.

I love jewelry but love inexpensive artsy stuff, often made out of sterling silver.

Mo brought up a great point that made me re-think my answer. I realized that there is a difference between what I am willing to spend more on rather than what I do, if that makes sense.

THese are the things that I don't wait for sales or care about sales.....I am willing to spend on coats and blazers. Black pants are very important to me and a core basic, but I feel that they are easier to find and tailor...so I wouldn't spend tons of money on a pair except to get nicer fabric ( like tropical wool ). I don't feel that way about coats and blazers which are harder to have tailored and I will wear for a long time.

I am willing to spend money on winter boots and a nice leather tote bag in leather.

If it is a second item in another reincarnation, I am willing to go cheaper...like a trench. I will spend more money on my basic, neutral trench, but then spend less on my raspberry polka dot one on sale....

And though the love of my sartorial life is accessories, there are soooo many great options out there now that I also don't feel as if I have to spend a lot to get something that I love.

I chuckled reading Victoria' s post because it reminded me how relative it all is too. For me, BR is a "treat" and somewhat expensive, as is JCrew. For me, the middle of the road, more everyday (with great sales ) for me is LOFT. However, when I worked, it was JCrew, BR and Bloomie's.

Probably shoes... I have size 11 fussy feet so I will spend on a couple of pairs a season as I love walking everywhere and they HAVE to comfy, versatile etc. I do tend to spend a bit on clothes but I think they are more expensive here in Aust than the USA, and being hot most of the time, summer clothes pretty much just last one year. I find my suits and "winter" clothes and "the" pair of boots last several years and I spend a bit on those including nice jackets. Jewellery I tend to buy on holidays or a gift shop nearby has nice quality, unusual necklaces etc - mainly for under $20... Bags last quite a while so CPW is pretty low... Good question

1. Shoes --- blame my small, wide, very fussy feet. (On the other hand, handcrafted leather is relatively cheap in India, so I don't spend as much on bags and avoid 'brands'.)

2. Bras --- worth the difference they make to every outfit, even if you can't see them. The same clothes hang SO differently with the wrong foundation garments.

3. Jewellery --- again a matter of necessity: sensitive skin won't let me wear anything but precious metals and stainless steel. So I buy little and not often. But I'm lucky --- precious metals are usually hand-wrought in India, and much cheaper than machined or die-cast! So I know I'm paying for the craftsmanship AND getting a bargain to boot. Gotta love that. For everyday use, I adore organic lacquered wood --- a tad more expensive than other 'junk' jewellery (as non-precious and even semi-precious things are called here), but again, the craftsmanship is so worth supporting, and they come in gorgeous colours.

4. Jeans -- fit and fabric. Enough said.

5. Ethnic scarves -- wearing Indian clothes half the time, I tend not to buy pre-coordinated 'outfits' (top, bottom, scarf/shawl) like many of my compatriots do. It's more budget-friendly to mix and match simpler pieces, and splurge on a nice dupatta (a supersized long scarf) in a more luxurious fabric or a handwoven textile to 'dress up' occasionally. I guess it's the equivalent of adding a statement scarf to a basic shirt and pants.

For all the rest, I think I get by on a smaller budget and less shopping than most.

Footwear for sure. I have hard-to-find size so if I find something I like and which fits well I buy it without waiting for a sale.
#2 would be coats and jackets including leather ones because they make such an impact in the outfits it is worth splurging on them.
#3 would be well fitting jeans and trousers. My pear-ish bottom is hard to fit in them so if they fit it is worth the expense.
And of course bras!
For everything else I am able to find decent quality items which I like and which fit me well on sale or discount and this is where I save while still getting the things I love.

As I'm also in a warm climate, I don't have the need for coats and boots. I love, love, love handbags and jewelry and would like to own more watches. I'm finding that my clothing doesn't last very long in this climate. Perspiration, wear and washing are taking its toll so I need to buy more of each item, especially tops and bras. For casual wear, shoes are usually sandals which are relatively inexpensive, so luckily I can have lots to choose from. I would say that most of my clothing budget will be spent on tops, then handbags, followed by jewelry, pants and shoes.

I'm glad you posted this, Victoria, because I was thinking about this too.
When I started trying to upgrade my style, I discovered Frye boots and Fluevog shoes.
In addition, I didn't have any accessories (except scarves). As it turns out, I have expensive taste in jewelry: I really like handcrafted pieces. So I'm buying from Etsy, which is reasonable prices, but the things that appeal to me are not cheap, and the prices are comparable to new boots.
I am trying to keep things in budget by going slowly.
My clothes are generally not expensive, but then I went and bought a leather jacket.
I am a semi-minimalist and I love Velvetychocolate's description above - I don't need a lot, but I want what I wear to have meaning to me and impact on my style. Hopefully all the things that cost a lot will be with me for a long time.

I think I spend the most on coats, bags and boots, in that order. I do love accesories but tend to bargain shop for them.

Jewellery - I really appreciate a well-designed piece of jewellery. I don't wear a lot - only one item aside from my wedding rings. I won't wear earrings and a necklace - it'll be one or the other. Same thing with bracelets. If I'm wearing a bracelet or bracelets, I won't wear any other jewellery.

I am happy wearing something very simple, but it's that one piece of jewellery that just makes it. Example being a white button down shirt with a beautiful pencil skirt, but ...then there's the unusual cuff bracelet that a friend brought me back from her trip to France.

I really like seeing Angie's pared-down outfits with a fabulous necklace - for example: a black turtleneck, casual jeans - but then she's got the most amazing pendant with a simple jeans and black sweater outfit. It'll turn out that the necklace belonged to her Mum, and it'll be a one-of-a-kind piece.

I might have the same jeans, and the same top as lots of other people - but the one piece of jewellery is going to be unique. It'll be something I picked up in some far-flung place, or something my grandmother wore. An unusual brooch on a simple jacket, a pendant that a friend made - that kind of thing.

I'm tending to get like you Victoria because I live in a mostly warm climate. I have an $18 trench coat and a $20 pair of ankle boots because they aren't really neccessary items in my climate. I bought myself that Express moto jacket for Christmas ($98) but that was a total splurge. I guess handbags would be next, but I only have two pricey ones (even they were under $100). Then shoes, clothing and scarves, most of which are under $20. That's just where my budget/comfort level is right now.

jewelry, which I am picky about and I know very very well exactly what I like/want and will splurge on followed by footwear, gear, scarves and the rest is a bargain shopping endeavour. I really have wanted a red leather handbag for 10 years... Maybe that will be a big splurge if I ever find one I LOVE...

I think I spend more on handbags. I am amassing quite a handbag collection, and I don't mind investing a little in something that will last a long time.

I don't spend a lot on clothes because, like you, I buy a lot of things on sale and not from very expensive retailers. I don't spend as much as I should on shoes, but my feet are getting fussier with each passing year so that's sure to change eventually.

I spend more on coats (typically wool), shoes, boots and bags - always leather. I love jewelry and enjoy designing and hand-crafting my own unique sterling/stone bead bracelets and earrings.
