I would pair it with a more tonally consistent top. So, a red top to go with the red pants. That will keep from cutting you in half.

Or, wear them with a tunic. Remember the rule of thirds. 2/3 tunic and 1/3 leg/pants is more flattering than 1/2 and 1/2. (These values are approximate not literal.)

Claire - You've got a point about the camera angle. I've noticed my skirts look longer in the photos than they do in person - I think because of that, as well. And you're ALSO right about the fit - the next size down fit my legs better, but caused a severe case of muffin top!

Meredith and Manidipa (and probably others with the same smart idea) - I do think a shorter t-shirt or tank will help as it will show where my waist is. I realized I wore this tank and cardigan last Spring with white jeans, and of course that low contrast approach didn't have the same effect as with a bright color.

For the kind folks who recommended a less blocky shoe - i remembered I've been waiting for it to be warm enough to wear a pair of peep-toe oxfords I bought It's been so cold here, they slipped my mind! If it keeps warming up, I'll try those next.

http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/je.....sultback=0

So many good ideas from everyone. If I weren't dog tired I'd go try on more outfits right now! I'll post some later this month, I promise :-).

Nadya, I actually like what I see here a lot! That said, Claire makes a great point about camera angle. If you still feel stumpified after moving the cam down, what about a shorter T-shirt, keeping the cardigan, OR a shorter topper with the same T-shirt?

Love the color of those jeans! Have you tried a different tshirt under the sweater? Those flats are really cute too. I haven't tried skinnies yet so you are miles ahead of me!!

You've already received some great feedback and seem to have a plan to create a look you'll feel fab in. I just recently purchased red jeans, too (I call them fire britches) and it toook some playing in the closet to make it work well. I wear mine with jackets -- a denim, a ponte black moto style and a black anorak. I like the idea of striped t's and print tops underneath. I like the idea of the sheer blouse. Sounds elegant! The look you have is already far better than a 5! Post your next look!

Nadya, this is such a great outfit! Many of my outifts look much better on the hanger took so don't feel bad. Are the jeans a little too big? Maybe you just have slim legs and, like me, once you get the jeans to fit in the waist they are big in the legs?

Anyway, you could try a semi tuck in the front and then we would see more jean, elongating your leg line. I also think part of the *perceived problem* is in the camera angle. Taking a picture with the camera by your face and pointing downward will make your legs look stumpy everytime (ask me how I know this)!

I love the white shirt and the sweater, this is a perfect interpretation of Angie's Bright Gal on the Go formula. And I know heels make your legs look longer, but I would never tell you to take off those fabulous flats. I'd love to find a shoe just like that! I'll bet they go with everything, and I could wear them year round where I live. I think you look terrific and it's SO nice to see you post!

I love the grey and red together. That's a great combo. I'd experiment with the footwear too. The flats are cute, but I think they're taking a swing at the other items in this outfit for center stage...

I think the striped sweater isn't really working. The top could be long and fitted or boxy but shorter, I think. Great jeans, though!

Thanks fr all the great ideas! I have a shortish black jacket that I'll try, and a cropped denim jacket. I also have a new ivory sheer blouse that might work with the same color feel I was going for. Now to keep my eyes open for a nude flat or low heel! I will now admit that I also bought these in blue. I'm a bit sad they're a bit baggy after a half day of wear, but I think with the right top that will be less noticed.

Thanks, again, YLFers!

I totally see where you were going with this. It is nice, but it isn't a 10, like you! I would try something shorter on the top. That would elongate your leg line on the upper half. I'd also try a single color flat or heels. The two-tones (which are super cute, by the way!) make your eye stop twice: once when denim meets shoe and again at the shoe's cap. They are adorable, but not the shoe for this pair of jeans. A heel would help too because it would elongate you, but I don't think it is a must. Heel or flat, single tone.

I LOVE the neutral-striped sweater + top combo and your red jeans, Nadya, but I think the shape of the bottom half needs better balancing...? The jeans are slim cut & tapered, so it's making the top half look larger. I would experiment with footwear - maybe a more substantial shoe or bootie could improve the look, or even heels if you wear them! Barring that, I would look for a coloured jean with a bit of a flare, or a straight as opposed to tapered leg!

I think it is cute as is.

As far as refining it, if I was going to guess, the easiest *fix* would be to replace the cardigan for something more structured, say a blazer.

What about a black blazer and do the stripe element by wearing a striped tee? I bet a blazer would probably sharpen things up a bit. Higher heels always help in this type of situation as well.

I like christieanne's suggestions. It's a cute look overall, just not fab, which I'm sure is what you're after. The lengthening idea through the use of the same color top & bottom is super!

Hi,

I think the top half looks like it goes with another bottom, pencil skirt or dress pants. For some reason I feel it would be good to go super simple on top, maybe a white tee and cropped demin jacket. I would avoid all prints. You definitely do not have to take the jeans back. They are great.

I think maybe you are just not used to the look of the slimmer cut leg. It does change proportions.
I like how you styled it - really cute shoes and overall playful, modern look. You could try to do a tone on tone or a red top under the sweater and see if that gives you a longer look. A or nude shoe might lengthen more as well I did that with black skinnies the first few times i wore them just to get adjusted.

I am really wanting cobalt blue skinnies now more than ever

Hmmmm... I'm stumped. I think it has something to do with the top, but I'm not sure what to suggest. I'm sure Angie will know.

I do think that with pants like those, you need a longer top; perhaps one that's more voluminous (not so close-fitting) to counteract the slimness of the pants.

I really liked this outfit in my head, but once on it's only about a solid 5. This is my first time wearing these new red jeans, and I think I'm not used to styling skinny jeans! I feel this outfit's pretty stumpifying :-). Is it the effect of the long sweater? I'm open to any and all suggestions on how to wear these jeans. Or even, sniff, if the jeans have to go!
