I have been collecting jackets that are not blazers the last few years because blazers did not seem popular. After Angie's post showing so many interesting ways to style them I want to give it another try. My old blazers are feeling a bit tight in the shoulders these days. Cardiff girl, you are probably on to something looking for some stretch. Like you, if the fit is good in the shoulders, the jacket is way too wide in the middle. I can't fill it out.

This is such an interesting and timely question, Joy. When I was blazer shopping this very week, I was struck by the variety of silhouettes available even in my size bracket. I tried on jackets that ranged in length from the hip to the lower thigh (no joke). Patterns were plentiful. I myself steered clear of anything boxy or bouble-breasted, so I'm not sure how readily available those options were. But it sounds like blazer designers, at least, realize there's scope for both the timeless and the trendy in their offerings (Staysfit's unfortunate experience notwithstanding).

I sympathise with your difficulties in finding blazers that fit properly.l have broad shoulders compared to my narrow torso and am long waisted therefore quite often blazers are too short or fit my shoulders but are too baggy around my torso.l have found that looking for a degree of stretch in the fabric helps but like you I definitely have to try before I buy.Good luck with your hunt!

I tried a long, boxy, boxy double-breasted plaid blazer from Zara recently. It had a button-in (removable) faux hoodie. I was so excited about it. Veronica Beard look for less. Good workmanship. It looked horrible on me.

I have quite a few (maybe 5) blazers I've kept over the years. I should post them to see if they're still worth keeping. They are very classic.

Thank you each for your thoughts and Angie for Finds. I am 5’3” so don’t think the long or oversized ones would work on me. I love the blazer look but have a very hard time finding a good fit due to my wide shoulders, small bust, long arms, short torso and sway back. I really feel like I need to try them on.

DD and I were shopping for a simple classic navy blazer and couldn’t find any in our local mall. They had cropped blazers and some statement looks——-floral, etc. No solid, simple blazers of any sort. I suspect it has a lot to do with our community which is so casual. There is a very small market for blazers.

I bought a plaid single breasted blazer from Target in February. I wanted to try something current without spending much to see how I feel about them this time around. Surprisingly, I reach for it more than any other jacket I own. I will be following this thread, thanks for asking.

That's a very interesting question. I love blazers, have many of them and wear them everyday for work - but I have to admit I never asked myself whether their style is current. Like previous commenters, I don't like the look of those current, trendy double-breasted blazers on me but they are everywhere, in stores and in the streets.

Joy I remember when I first started reading YLF jacket/blazer styles were the most confusing thing for me. Anyway, by now I have determined that double breasted jacket visually widen me, and tailoring around the waist create a very good silhouette so I keep that in mind. Not to say I don't have other styles in my closet - but if I were to put a bit of money into one jacket right now it would be the tailored look, with a nipped in waist, which is coming back I think.

Joy, I’m glad you asked this question. I noticed all the blazers on the blog post were relatively long. I was wondering if a longer blazer is required to pull off the examples of the formula. I’ll follow this thread with interest.

The boyfriend, oversized styles are definately in. I like them because they create balance when I wear my skinny jeans. (look 1). But the classic styles from Banana Republic and J Crew never go out of style (look 2-6). Sorry for the number of images - I just love blazers with jeans. A good blazer is all about the fit. Also, what looks flattering on you? For example, I like cropped and short but they don't look good on me since I have long torso so I stick to longer blazers. Also, sometimes I have them tailored so the waist fits my waist since it falls lower.

When I try on double breasted jackets I find it adds pounds to my already thick middle. It might just be my perception of me in the garment. I found the same thing when looking at trenches earlier in the year. So I pass on that style.
Sometimes the longer ones are not as flattering on me either. And being broad in shoulders I error on the side of roomy there (bad girl)
So I don’t think I have found a set formula for purchasing a blazer for me- it’s try it on and look in mirror......so scientific- lol.

The trendiest -- which might not be what I'd buy, or you'd buy -- are double breasted, glen plaid or otherwise patterned, boyfriend blazers with strong shoulders (but not huge shoulders). Photo for reference. It seems like such a flash-in-the pan trend and I doubt it'll have longevity.

I did spend a while searching for one when I needed interview clothes. But I think my frame isn't quite right for the look, I couldn't find a mid-range version in a good quality fabric, and I wasn't sure I'd wear it aside from one or two interviews. Instead I finally settled on a similar look - a masculine but not oversized blazer from J Crew in glen plaid wool. I bought it used online and unfortunately it's too big, which is a shame.

Double breasted boxy/boyfriend styles are trending - which is not my thing at all. Who wants a trendy blazer - especially given how much good ones can cost? I go for the Smythe Duchess cut myself, or something like it.

Very timely question Joy! My blazers are all from my working days which means they are at least 10 years old. I almost bought a new one last week because this is the time of year when I would wear a blazer with jeans.
I have seen a lot of bloggers wearing very long blazers to the top of their thighs and they are usually plaid. This is not a look that is flattering to me. I would go with a shorter blazer, single-breasted and plain. Something like the Smythe one that is on my wish list.

I would buy single breasted and, most likely, traditional length, and plain--because that's what suits me and my needs best. But your body, style and needs are probably different from mine, and fortunately, several styles are available.

Reading Angie's blog post outfit formula on blazer and jeans, I realized that if I bought a new blazer today to update my oldies, I would not know what to look for...single or double breasted; cropped, long, or traditional; lapel style and size; shoulder fit; plaid or print or plain???

What would you buy today?
