8 hour heels have been a consistent hole for the past several years of my life. I'm hoping to correct that this year, but not optimistic.

My other huge, gaping hole is sleeved dresses. I like layering but some days I just want ease and simplicity, especially when I'm strapped for time in the morning.

Thank you for contemplating the issue, ladies! Yes, Tanya, a precise definition is in order. Another way to think if it (and why SYC helps so much) is if you are constantly putting outfits together from your closet and thinking, if I only had item X... Or as Anne says, you really feel the lack of something. That's how I found my holes. Anne, I do think replacing an older item that gets a lot of wear counts too.

My list includes
a solid scarf (like Lisa and I started another thread on this)
versatile dressy structured clutch
versatile dressy pumps
faded straight leg jeans-- dark washes just don't work on a dusty playground, I can wear fashion sneakers with them and the hems are more manageable than bootcuts.

And that's it. Everything else would be a want.
It sounds like a lot of people need some basic pumps, various kinds of boots and knitwear.

In terms of actual holes, I keep wanting a longsleeved black cardigan, and seem to have mislaid the one I own. Being summer here, I am feeling the lack of swimwear coverups.

For winter, I have a hole in that I have nothing to wear with skirts and dresses apart from heeled black boots. So some new pumps or maryjanes are on the list for winter. Also a non denin, non- pleather casual jacket or blazer (I don't own any).

I'd love a new wool coat too, but that'd count as a want, since I own one already. But it isn't all that stylish and is 6 years old now, so I think that justifies replacement!

My biggest hole at the moment is closed shoes or ankle boots which I can wear under shorter hemmed work dress pants and jeans. I only have one pair of low closed shoes/boots and they're tan, so they look weird with black outfits. Today I actually considered changing into ballet flats once I got to work. So I'd like a black or grey pair of ankle boots or loafers.

Another hole is bootcut jeans nice enough for work. I have two pairs, but one doesn't fit right and the other is now too faded.

Oh goodness, my fall/winter wardrobe IS a hole at this point! Just to get through the winter I need to reorder a new size in a coat, buy some winter boots, a scarf or two, a good hat, a couple of layering t's, a button down, and one or two sweaters. I have one tunic/dress that is really a winter item, but I don't have the skinnies or boots to wear under it, although I have an orphan scarf that only goes with it.

For spring/summer I have three pieces languishing in my closet that I can't wear because two need tops and shoes, one needs a jacket and shoes. I will need some new t's and lightweight or short-sleeve layering pieces like cotton blouses and sleeveless items.

Shoes are my constant battle. I definitely need some sneakers that can be worn with casual skirts, shorts, and jeans. I need a new pair of sandals that can be worn with skirts. I need new cowboy boots, and I am thinking something interesting this time around. I also need some gear boots and new swimsuits.

More holes than I'd like. I suppose I don't really NEEEEEEEED any of these except the top one, though without them I feel my style won't progress to where I want it.

- A party capsule (pretty much missing everything except shoes)
- Dark gray or charcoal cigarette/slim-straight jeans
- Sun dresses/skirts (summer clothing in general is lacking, though we don't get a lot of summer weather)
- A couple tunics or short dresses to wear with skinnies/leggings
- Modern cut blazer (all mine are vintage 80s )
- Updated handbag collection!

I would loove to go shopping together! Since that will probably not happen in reality, at least we can do it via YLF. I plan to find the jeans first and build the rest based on them.

Yes Tanya, the scientist in you is correct and I identified wants and not holes. However, if you want to achieve a new look and you are missing, say, faded flared jeans, then perhaps that is a hole :)

Either way, since our lists are so similar, we should probably go shopping together!

Skirts! I've recently fallen in love with skirts again, and only have 1 in my wardrobe that fits me! A trip to the fabric store will solve that though.

And after skirts, bottoms in general - due to my weight gain, not a lot fit me, but this is the best weight for me, so new bottoms it is :)

Tops I do have quite a lot of, but they are all dependent upon having the right bottoms... so a lot aren't being used at the moment - so once I solve the bottoms issue, they should be right.

And then, shoes - I have lots of heels which are just not practical for my lifestyle, so 2011 is going to be the year of the flat or low wedge for me!

I also need a new stretchy black belt, but my current one will hold on for a bit longer, and I do want a new everyday handbag, but they are both way down the list of holes.

Laura I love writing them down now too - that instant memory loss happened here all the time!!

Very interesting thread. I think we would need to precisely define what wardrobe holes are, that is something that one really needs to fulfill a certain function, or complete many potential outfits as opposed to fun exciting new items that would be classified as wants ( my inner scientist requires precise definitions :).

In terms of holes, I have discovered during SYC that mine are mostly footwear: a pair of completely flat booties/ankle boots to wear instead of ballet flats in the cold weather, a pair of flat oxfords and leopard ballet flats; than a grey/pewter bag, knee length puffer and black black straight jeans to replace my old pair that became too small and is in the consingment bag now.

In terms of wants for spring, my list is extremely similar to Laura's : faded bell bottom jeans, 2 tops to go with them, some kind of comfy platform shoes for the jeans, and a one or two big pendant necklaces.

I need some nice belts. It is so hard to find plus size belts- it's like we don't have waists! (I'm also vegetarian- so no leather- that doesn't help).

A black cardigan- crazy right? I don't wear a lot of black but it goes so nicely with jewel tones I think it's time to cave.

Dark wash skinnies- My husband is teaching this evening so I might just fill this whole tonight!

RIding boots- black or chestnut....black or chestnut....hmmmm

A structured red handbag- My Matt and Nat one is 6 years old and is starting to show it.

I'm somewhat new here - what is SYC?

I have lots of clothes but a few wardrobe holes:

- I need more dresses, but was VERY happy to get one from Mo last week (see photo).
- Business-type clothes - I work from home and don't need these items often, but could use a few things.
- Warmer shirts to wear with skirts.
- One or two heavier weight skirts. I like in San Diego, but it DOES get cold here sometimes!
- A pair of flat black boots - I'm very tall (5'10") with long legs and although I love heels, many of my pants just aren't long enough for them.
- Perhaps a pair of grey boots or closed toe heels.

You know, one thing I learned from SYC was when you notice a hole, write it down. When I'd be standing in my closet thinking, gee, I wish I had a scarf that had cobalt and black in it, I actually wrote it down instead of instantly forgetting it, and that helped a lot.

I don't really have holes, per se, but for spring, I'll be looking to add faded flare or bootcut jeans, some sort of top to go with them, and platform clogs, and a longer A-line denim skirt, which should also work with the same clogs and tops.

@Isabel, Calvin Klein offers great classic black pumps with cushioning. So perfect because they're timeless (no platform) yet affordable. As for flats, I really like Enzo Angiolini. @Queen Mum, have you checked out Land's End? They offer tons of basic warm sweater styles in different lengths. @Hanna, Chico's is the place to find shirts and tops that cover the booty. I bought my one and only tunic there and forced myself to try it. It washed and wore well so the fabric was worth the price.

My love affair with black pants has left me with nothing else but jeans! Gray flannel trousers would be great but the only ones I found were very "office" looking (Ellen Tracy). About blouses, I really love the myriad looks they offer an adult look, but when I put on one, I feel like it's wearing me! Not at all comfortable. Does anyone else feel trapped in a blouse?

I need stuff that is dressy enough to satisfy my Team Dressy urges, but casual enough that I can wear to work! Ack. So I need more structured plimsolls and skimmers, jeans, shorts, leggings, tunics.

Tops! I am so fussy about tops so I just end up buying dresses. I also see a similar frock for $20 more and it's a full outfit so I always end up buying that.

This is straight from my text file entitled "wardrobe holes". I have it on my iphone now and one of these is the only reason I will break my syc.

- Casual drapey knit tops I can wear over skinnies.
- A casual white shirt, long enough to wear with ponte pants.
- Turtlenecks.
- An oatmeal or warm neutral coloured cardigan to wear with dresses.
- Drapey neutral cardigans - they get worn every day where I live.
- Woven blouses. I think I have one that's functional and it's patterned.
- Some neutral scarves, particularly one in ballet pink.
- Some thin ankle socks I can wear with sandals.
- 2-3 pairs more leggings in different colours or maybe even patterns.
- A long silver chain to put my pendants on.

That's the needs. The wants list is a bit longer and sillier.

Straight leg black trousers. I really need a pair but cannot find the prefect pair anywhere!

And... a perfect fitting pair of boot cut jeans. Seems like an impossible task lately!

I also need tunics to wear with my skinny pants/jeans but can't find what I'm looking for.

I need a decent plain white tee and pullover sweater(s) that are long enough to pair with pants. I could use a tunic or caftan but it has to be just right - I don't like getting swallowed up in all that fabric. The rest are just wants honestly

How timely, I just wrote about this in the new SYC thread !!

I was shocked to find that I don't have a pair of just plain, old black pumps. And I just filled three holes over the holidays. I warm gray sweater, "party" flats - I usually entertain in slippers or my socks - the horror , and black flats.

I also need a couple of Second Base half camis for the summer. I am also going to be needing underwear and white jeans for the summer ( though that is not a essential).

I need new ponte leggings/pants, BRAS, black layering t's and sweaters. I kinda-sorta want a new tunic top of some sort....casual style. I just ordered online some new boots. This will get me through the winter. All this was discovered during my New Year's closet edit. Spring/Summer is a kettle of fish I am not ready to face yet!

My biggest hole, like Hanna, is in tunic or long tops for jeans/pants. I usually wear button-down shirts but would like more silky floaty long tops. The tunic length proportions are still a challenge because I'm fairly short.
Like Sarah, a sleek pair of black low-heeled boots to wear with skirts is still at the top of the list, a pair that fits skinny calves.

At the moment- bras, a swimwear ensemble appropriate for the gym, pants in general, but specifically black skinny pants, and tops that can be worn under jackets/sweaters.

I snagged a couple new sweaters long enough for skinnies and a pair of much desired (for 2 years) chestnut boots to tuck into skinnies right before starting SYC. For the moment the only hole I see (and can wait until next year) is a solid scarf or two. 99% of mine have prints, and a lot of print, not just solids in a design. Come spring/summer, I do have a list from last year already though.
