I am pretty well set and can't think of any true needs at the moment but I would like to add an olive outfit and/or an ink outfit and every year I always want to add some chunky sweater.

Oh! I do have a need. I need some rain boots but they need to be on the shorter side to fit my calves and at a very affordable price point so it's been an elusive item for me.

Here's my top three wishlist items:

I've had a cashmere sweater on my wish list for years now. I want either black or charcoal, v-neck, long sleeves, and hip-length. Somehow this very basic combo is hard to find in plus sizes. For the past few years the only ones I've seen in my size are either 3/4 sleeves, crew neck (or worse, the "mock t-neck"), or really short.

Casual non-jeans trousers. Maybe some cords? I'd like a relatively heavy weight, stretchy fabric, but with more body than ponte knit.

Decent-looking walking shoes, ideally something that could be worn with either a dress or trousers. I'm not sure what I want here but I'll know it when I see it!

Those red Matisse booties are on my list! Waving at Janet. Waiting for Austere August to pass to get those.

I feel pretty good about where I am regarding statement pieces. I need more basic tops in black, white and other neutral colors, so that's what I will focus on.

The one other piece that has been a HEWI for me is a knit off-white moto jacket to act as a cardigan replacement. I think I finally found one (see below). Yes, I am looking forward to the end of Austere August :)

For me it's mostly shoes as I have most other territory covered, with the exception of maybe one or two wildcards.

1. Oxfords or similar shoes in taupe or other light tan shade.
2. Fall sandals or other flats since it stays warm here until late November I need something slightly more covered but still cool
3. Already purchased The North Face fleece jacket in the baroque purple shade. I needed an everyday winter jacket that was a bit longer than my motos or other jackets. I sized up so I can wear this over sweaters.

I know, it was only supposed to be three, but I already purchased Everlane cashmere sweater in a heathered taupe brown shade -- and can't wait to wear it.

Also, a couple of sweaters, a couple of going-out tops, and a pair of skinny jeans.

I didn't have a thing on my list until I saw Tanya JCrew post.
I really want this shirt but have to get through Aug. I would like to have that shirt to go over my leather striped leggings I bought at NAS.

I've been looking for a chunky knit slightly oversized non-wool/hair sweater in a shade of white, without banding at the bottom. I've looked for at least 2 years without success, but still hold out hope!

I also want to replace gray cord skinnies with something else in dark gray, but not sure of the silhouette yet. Probably not skinnies!

Jeans that don't suck the life out of me, or fall down without a belt. It seems it is one or the other! I prefer not to wear belts with jeans. I really still love the idea of the Rag & Bone boyfriends, but I wish I could try a size or two up in person. My store doesn't have them, and I won't order such an expensive item without trying on first.

I also picked up a few things at NAS - two dresses, a leather jacket, and silk Eileen Fisher pants (they weren't on sale, but are perfect). Things I am considering:
A long camel wool vest from Mango
Slouchy, tapered wool pants (haven't seen these yet and not sure that I will find them).
Maybe a longer length red blazer or a red plaid skirt.

This site has really inspired me to just update instead of feeling like I need a new wardrobe twice a year. So in that spirit, I took stock of my closet and
my top 3 are:
a new trench (which I just ordered)
an updated pencil skirt - Ann Taylor has a black lace pencil skirt I am eyeing)
new black cardigan

I, too, would like a new handbag but I think I'm going to wait until spring/summer transition.

When Mo asked I said
Black silky tee (now purchased)
New handbag
Flat tan walking sandals

I also was on the lookout for more toppers - I have bought a crayon pink blazer now which I adore madly. I have two dresses arriving today from an online shop that were heavily reduced.

So my current three would be

new handbag
flat walking sandals or similar (probably tan but maybe white)
shorts or culottes or lightweight pants

I will be sticking to this list as we have a renovation and a holiday planned that are taking most of my budget. These posts help me focus.

I will do a show and tell post once the dresses arrive:)

The only need I'll have is if I move up north, I'll need a pair of snow-appropriate boots (I'm thinking LL Bean duck boots, because I love lace up ankle boots & they have a light navy version this year, but I might need something even more gear-ish).

So, reserving one slot for footwear (if I don't move, I'll add another pair anyway, just without as many weather constraints), my top 2 wants are probably dresses: I'd love to find a tropical wool sleeveless fit & flare grey dress I could wear pinafore-style over long sleeve tops (this has been on my want list for years) and a long sleeve fit & flare winter dress (either flannel or wool or something cosy like that) in any colour or neutral that flatters me. My style preferences and reliance on secondhand shopping pretty much rule out immediately adding new trends, but I love forest/pine green, so I hope that one trickles into thrift stores soon (I've been looking for something in that colour for years w/o success).

I'll look forward to seeing what you end up adding!

Other than a couple of pairs of Fluevogs I don't actually need but will acquire anyway...my main 3 fall-season wardrobe update goals are:

Get to the darned seamstress to have some things altered already!

There is a gorgeous deep brownish-gold color I love that's rarely available, but it's popped up a little and I might be able to find a suitable sweater or other top in it this season.

I'm open to dark greens should something nice show up.

Mainly though I plan to SYC for now (other than any gems that get discovered in Seattle).

@Tanya -- another blast from the 80s past, those plaid sweaters! I had a black-and-white one from Kenzo that I LOVED...and Mom promptly put the 100% wool item right through the wash. Can you say shrunken and thickly felted?

I need to go find that wardrobe-tragedy whine I posted a while back and add that to the list. :(

(ETA: I should also have on my fall-update list--a decent haircut! Heh. But then it's 4 things. :))

I filled most of my wants at NAS...new coat and riding boots. I will probably need a new, fluid fit cashmere sweater or two to replace more fitted ones. I'd like a lux sweatshirt to wear with silk track pants and maybe something oatmeal colored. I wonder how an oatmeal out ensemble would look in place of white-out

I've just finished updating my early fall/indian summer wardrobe. I've been wardrobe building since last fall and I'm so excited to have some pieces already in the wardrobe to work with! I can't wait to get to the place where I can focus on a few statement pieces each season. Looking forward to seeing your choices Ingunn! I am on the lookout for a few items to beef up my late fall wardrobe.
1. A navy or grey casual jacket, preferably a bomber style that fits my longer torso.
2. A cool weather dress in grey in a cozy fabrication sans wool.
3. A large and luscious burgundy scarf.
4. Something in forest green since it would help some of my early fall/Indian summer pieces transition to color weather and it's a color I've been waiting for!

I've had these listed for many, many months when I first assembled my year's shopping list.

bright colored wool coat (peacoat? car coat?)

mixed media anorak/military jacket preferably with leather sleeves

asymmetrical sweater, maybe sheer striped

I might not get these this year. It may be Jan or Feb or even fall of 2015 depending on my job situation when we move back home. I have several winter coats and sweaters and jackets waiting for me. I can do without them, so it'll be fine if I don't. I just want them. :)

I am lusting after the plaid Smythe jacket and Helmut Lang tuxedo jacket, but those are waay out of my budget so unless they go on significant sale that is not happening.
I don't really need anything, so it is more about wants, refreshers, and occasional inexpensive trendy piece.
The three pieces I would like to add for sure are a plaid sweater, a cashmere sweater in radiant orchid and black woven wool track pants if I manage to find them.
I am generally interested in adding knitwear, tops with new funnel necks, dark red and cognac booties, and perhaps a new puffer in color, as I have a black one.

I bought a new coat last year, which replaced a black pea coat I bought in 1997! ( which I am keeping for really bad weather days because it's so warm). So I don't need that, I have plenty of shoes, don't need them. But: every year I do like to get at least one nice jacket and there's one on line at brooks brothers that I love, ( sorry, don't know how to do the link thing) but it's a grey houndstooth almost equestrian looking tailored jacket. But I'll wait until their friends and family or wardrobe sale in September. And, if I come across any nice glen plaid or black watch plaid pants, I'll get those. All my pants are solid and I'd like something in a pattern. That's all!

Not much this season. already bought black low heel booties, and for fall or until cold weather black 3 inch heel caged sandals.

will be shopping for tall brown boots, maybe a sweat shirt or two, black relaxed skinny jeans, and checking out wide leg pants of some sort.

I like how thoughtful you all are being about your additions! I'm such an emotional/impulse shopper that you never know what I'll find and when... But I did get some great things before Austerity August that I'm anxious to wear when the temps drop. I'm quite set on "needs" other than a new silver belt to replace my old, falling-apart one, and another sports bra.

However, I'm pretty besotted with the red version of the Matisse Nugent booties that Angie and I already have in animal print, as my preference for shoe heels is getting a little lower. I have tall dark red boots with 3+" heels, and I'm just not feeling those heel heights as much these days. The booties will serve a completely different purpose and work well with the bootcut jeans I'd like to wear again this fall and winter.

I would also like to add something in forest green while the color is trending -- I had some old items in that color that no longer fit my style (fitted tee), so I'll be keeping an eye open for that.

I am also open to finding one more handbag in a beautiful rich fall-winter color, but I'm prepared to be really, really picky about that -- it needs to be love. I have enough of a bag collection that its not a necessity.

Great question, Ingunn, and I am looking forward to seeing what you end up choosing.

Carla, I LOVE your photos! So inspirational! And those items will look amazing on you!

I've just made some purchases at the NAS sale, including underthings and PJs, and so I don't have many needs for the fall and winter -- at the moment. But I am keeping my eyes open for some upgrades and/ or additional items to round out important capsules. But I can be PPP for all of these.

One actual need is footwear for the gym -- I need outdoor trail runners and some new indoor shoes, although the indoor shoes can wait for a while.

Another is a warm toque or beanie and some new gloves.

Wants that would become part of my core wardrobe include:

A new coat to round out my winter coat capsule. It could be a puffer in a colour, or it could be another wool coat in a different colour and cut. Currently I have 2 wool coats (one warmer and one less warm) and a steel grey puffer. So this is not a necessity. But I'd love to add to the capsule since I wear a winter coat every day for about 6 months.

A pair of refined taupe booties. I still have my Report Marks "Dicker" knockoffs, but they are more a warm weather bootie for me.

A new bag that works with my red coat and my other coats. Not sure what colour or style yet. This is a bit of a HEWI.

A pair of flat equestrienne style boots, possibly not in black. Perhaps in taupe, cognac, grey...I am open on that. Also a HEWI.

Wants that are in the "fun to have" category to add a bit of spice and variety:

A new patterned topper from Zara or similar -- something different and a bit trendy.

Culottes? I will try them.

Whatever other inexpensive trend that catches my fancy and perhaps works well with the rest of the closet.

DEB, you are so right, that is our prerogative I love the idea of a patterned dress for myself, too. Yours sounds wonderful. New shoes and bags are the best way to update anything in my opinion.

RoseandJoan, I'm thinking about adding a very long cardigan in grey. They are all the craze here right now, which means everybody have one. I also love the idea of cream and white in skirts and pants for winter.

Gigi, I love your list. A navy v-neck is indispensable for me, and I hope the one I have will last at least one more season.

citygirldc, grey is so versatile. I bought a fluid grey cashmere sweater this summer, and I'm in love.

Dianthus, pant suits are so attractive and I adore todays fashion of styling them with sporty footwear and tees. A quick change into a shell and pumps, and the look is something quite different. I have one in black and one in navy, and I would love to have a grey one, too. Or pinstripes!

I couldn't think of a thing when I first read the post. And then I saw the suit Carla posted and it reminded me that I have wanted a pant suit for a few years but haven't found the right one. I have gone from grey to navy and back a few times but it is on my list in perpetuity.

Our winters are so long and our summers so short that I find it hard to change focus before the weather starts to change. I have enough coats and boots/booties. I would like to get wider leg pants but worry about the snow and wet with them. Perhaps I am in the same boat as you Ingunn and don't need a lot.

I plan to keep this thread in mind to see if I can be inspired by others' needs and wants.
