For me, statement items are somewhat attention-grabbing. Bold colours. Interesting prints/patterns. Silver footwear. Bold/unusual jewellery. Classic hats, capes, shawls, boas, large scarves, long coats.

Bright colours and/or bold patterns = statements for me.  I consider them a statement if I don't wear them very often but don't want to get rid of them.  I find them energising to wear, as well as Look at Me pieces, so I need to be in the right mood.  A few that come to mind;

A red pussybow button down with white polka dots (worn 2 x),
A red velvet bodycon tunic (only worn once when I was 10kgs lighter),
2 Spotty Ripcurl Girl surfer skirts, one in blues/acid yellow/white, one in purples/orange/white,
A cheetah print dress.

I have many more patterned pieces, and some other animal prints but they do not feel so statement-y as the above mentioned for some reason. I think for me a Statement piece takes me slightly out of my comfort zone, so as mentioned I must be in the mood.

Oh and I love large statement rings and I wear at least one or two daily.

Let's see. I have the statement dress shown here. I have a glittery tulle overskirt to wear with leggings, except the only time I wore it I left glitter everywhere. I have a black sequined cardigan that has yet to be worn.

I have fingerless gloves and some memorable footwear.

A no-longer available black and white fanny pack designed to resemble an Imperial Storm Trooper from Star Wars.

My Issey Miyake Pleats Please top.

Geez, more statements than I would have thought.

I definitely have statement heavy footwear and need an intervention when it comes to silver shoes. My silver bags tend to wear out so maybe I’m okay there. I have dozens of pairs of patterned fishnet hose, but discovered this Sunday that the first pair and probably the second are a bit more statement-y than I intended. Well, I layered them over acid green tights for warmth and to go with an acid green top, but the legs were a bit TOO MUCH. I swapped out the skirt for one that covered more of my legs so that helped some.

I think I am rebelling against that whole Dressed for Success thing I felt I had to conform to in the ‘80s to be taken seriously as a young looking attorney. But I still don’t wear my craziest footwear and stockings to work.

I don’t wear brights at all but I think I have a wardrobe full of statement items. I just think of them as the star or focal point of an outfit. Something that is interesting or unique. A bit attention grabbing. For my wardrobe that would be some prints (I like dark floral and abstract prints especially), metallics (I wear muted metallics), interesting or exaggerated shapes (volume, flares, asymmetry, puddling in pants, stompy boots), luxe fabric (velvet, brocade, silk) or highly textured fabric (distressing, mesh, ribbing, laddering). Or it might be the way it’s combined that makes something a statement piece. A tailored jacket becomes a statement piece when you wear it with jeans, more so than when you wear it with matching tailored pants. Sneakers become a statement piece when you wear them with a very formal suit.

Most of my wardrobe consists of statement pieces. Bold colors, metallics, asymmetry, patterns, and lots of texture. I've recently added more neutrals to my wardrobe, especially cream/ivory and warm brown, in simple silhouettes.

I don’t know, really. Just something bright doesn’t do it for me. Below my very orange pants and shoes. Are they statements? Not to me. Although it’s unusual for me to wear a bright color, it is not….. interesting enough?

I don’t think statements need to be bright or a quirky shape. A white eyelet blouse can be a statement in an otherwise quiet wardrobe.

Maayybe a couple of things. My navy faux fur leopard coat is unusual and so is my Boden velvet blazer. Possibly my Desigual poncho? This is such an interesting topic.

I know I am making a statement with my clothing choices, but I think its the total look (pattern matching, wild color coords, high/low), not so much an individual item. When I hear "statement", I think of big and bold pieces: patterned coats, chandelier earrings, Iris Apfel in other words. I seem to be going in the opposite direction lately. :-)

A Google search for statement clothing brought up very bright, sometimes colorful, patterned pieces. Quite fun! And none of them were very expensive, either.

My thought on statements is the opposite of Irina's To me, ideally they're something that are dead right for the wearer (in looks and/or personality) but would likely seem out of place/inauthentic/costumey on someone else. Sure, you can buy statement pieces that don't align (for a change or a trend), but I suspect those are the things that don't have longevity in people's wardrobes or don't really get worn much or at all.

Irina's description of statements as items that are unusual for the wearer is useful. But then there are those who dress primarily in brights/ textures, patterns, etc, for whom a quiet neutral item would be unusual. I am not sure we'd then call the neutral item a statement. Tricky!

Still, I understand her point. I wear some bright colours (red) but don't necessarily consider my red items statements -- it sort of depends on the rest of the outfits. I wear a lot of silver metallic and also don't consider those items statements, necessarily, especially since they bookend my hair.

That said, here I will contradict myself and show a few items I do consider statements.

Note: a few are brights that almost always get comments. (I have many other red items that are less commented upon.

A few are interesting or quite trendy cuts -- Zara skirt, Dries pants.

The leather jacket it vintage and quite unusual. So it receives comments. The grey and white coat is very dressy (also thrifted).

It is always so interesting to lean what people consider as statement pieces. For me it should be something out of ordinary for a wearer.
My style is minimal, I wear a few neutral colors and almost no pattern fabrics. I’m attracted to unique, statement pieces but can’t easily find them in style that would work for me.

I have a handful of items I would call statements. T-shirts and dresses from Marimekko with large print, a silk Helmut Lang asymmetrical top, maybe some pants. I probably can call “a statement” my black long dress because of its oversized shape and satiny fabric. It is my “special occasion “ dress.

Thanks for the replies, lots to think about!
I wonder about the effect of colour. Bright colours and interesting patterns obviously make a statement, but I wonder about colour more generally. I tend to think of my wardrobe as quite colourful but the colours are soft, so nothing necessarily stands out from the rest.

I’m in Boring Corporate Clothing Recovery mode. I’m intentionally wearing out the Boring Cashmere I bought for work, and intentionally replacing it with interesting cabled sweaters. I’m wearing out the crisp white cotton poplin blouses I bought each year for work and replacing them over time with warmer colors and a more interesting mix of cuts. I am not making much progress on the boring black flats; they are indestructible. Instead, I have moved to more casual bags to wear with them. All of this has taken years, but the result is I have much more interesting pieces to wear with my essentials like my extensive collection of black pants.

Hi all, I've been lurking for a long time but decided to come out today to ask this question!

Angie's post today about statement pieces really resonated and got me wondering about statements in my own wardrobe. I think my style reflects "me" but it isn't particularly dramatic, I don't wear bright colours or metallics for instance. I can identify a few statements but not many. I'm wondering whether I have a lack of statement items, or am just having trouble identifying them.

Care to share what kinds of things you consider statements in your own wardrobes?
