For summer I like woven fabrics, especially silk or linen, with assume trivial hems worn untucked. Silk woven pull on tees are a favorite. I avoid knits, especially cotton, as feeling hot and damp and too ordinary.

I tend to wear T shirts. Some are more dressy and some are more casual. It depends on what I am doing. I have an addiction to 3 Dots scoop neck 3/4 T shirts. They fit me very well. I have about 6 and would buy more if I could find them. The cotton is very soft and they wash well. Pic #1 I also love Sarah Pacini layering Ts. I have one. Then I have some graphic Ts. And an assortment of other ones.
I try to buy other types of tops but I have not found any that dazzle me. I would rather accessorize. I did order a top from Nordstroms that got rave reviews from a Blogger (not Angie) and also on the website. No No No. The small was too big and it ended in a funny place. Back to T shirts. Pic #2. I can't do Finds but it was Trouve V neck Mixed Media Top. Great colour.

@gradfashionista thanks for starting this thread! I've been finding that most of my tops are too drapey or too slouchy, bc that was the trend and I was trying to cover my belly. Now I am in the mood for a change and need more tailored, shorter tops to feel fresh. I'm not sure what these are yet - I'll have to do an inventory of my fall wear and then revisit this thread to see what I need.

This Summer, I proclaimed a moratorium on t-shirts. Suddenly, they seemed hot, clingy, and unflattering on me, but buttoned-up tailored shirts were too confining in humid weather. I wanted loose, light, breezy tops, and I ended up with with a half-dozen I really love: three are cotton gauze, the other three fine cotton batiste. All are white or cream with delicate insertions of lace or embroidery, except one cherry- red print, and are either oversized, or shorter and loosely gathered from a yoke, and have loose sleeves. I've been wearing these blouses constantly with slim cropped pants, long shorts, or rolled skinny jeans, and find that the loose-over-slim combo makes me feel just structured enough, but free and comfortably cool. The lacy white tops are pretty with antique brooches at the neckline. You could call these feminine blouses boho, or boho-lite--not my usual style--but they feel deliciously summery to me. I found them at Madewell, Marabella, and in thrift shops.

I have lived in my NYDJ blouses - basically the sleeved version of the first find Peri posted. I have I think 3 solids and 4 printed ones. Solids are halogen from rack. Printed ones are nydj. They travel well and wear like iron. However, I've been defaulting to this uniform for months now and I'm getting bored so I will have a look at others suggestions on this thread too.

It's taken me a while to get my shirt preferences in order, but I'm pretty sorted these days. In order of polish (roughly):

Graphic tees and breton tops. I like v-necks and boatnecks. I often chop the tight, restricting crewneck off cheap t-shirts and leave a raw-edge scoop neck.

Merino tank tops. Mine ore old, and from Icebreaker; they fit great and are real workhorses for me. They look good under a cardigan or light jacket. I also like Uniqlo's supima cotton tanks for a very basic sleeveless baselayer.

Chambray and linen button-front shirts, usually long sleeve with the sleeves rolled, although I've added some short sleeve button-fronts this year that I like a lot. I also have several oxford shirt which I consider a step up from chambray/linen.

I'm considering adding a silk shirt/shell or two, but that is a level of refinement I've never needed. In situations calling for that level of polish, I've always ended up in a dress anyway.

This is a warm-weather list. In the winter it's flannel and chamois, wool sweaters over a thin long-sleeve baselayer, and heavier-weight bretons.

Things I tend to shy away from in tops:
tunic lengths, or anything that falls much below the hip (I do actually have a couple tunics, but I tend to think of them more as "mini-dresses" than as tops. )
all-over prints (floral, abstract, geometric, etc.)
synthetic fibers
three-quarter sleeves
bell sleeves, or anything else that can't be rolled/scrunched
dolman sleeves, batwings, etc.

I don't consciously avoid asymmetrical hems, but I don't have any.

Almost all of my tops are tailored or fluid fit and this seems to work well for me; I wear a much wider variety of fits on the bottom, from body-con (leggings) to oversized (baggy linen beach pants, sailor pants, etc). I also prefer tops that are easy to layer under jackets, which probably explains the lack of asymmetry and funky sleeve styles in my wardrobe.

Oddly enough, a black scoop-neck mostly cotton EF tee was the first thing that came to mind. As kkards said, it's an "easy yet elevated" silhouette that works equally well with white jeans, a black seersucker skirt, or layered. And another "basic boring black" tee, a deep v-neck from American Apparel, worn over a very form-fitting black camisol, for casual manual-labor wear.

Other fallbacks are drapey asymmetric sleeveless tops from EF or Classiques Entiers. (Well I know that final 's' isn't really on there, but I'm not certain why; perhaps I'm missing a play on words.) Most are solid black or navy or charcoal, though a particularly well-fitting lined knit multicolored geometric print top from CE stands out when I want to break up a column.

None of this is inspiring, but it works for me; my priorities are to be covered up and so well-fitting as to be unremarkable.

Where do you stand on the bra-fitting front, and with camisoles? A perfectly-fitted good-quality underwear set that "sparks joy" (pardon!) can make all the difference in how I feel about a good but plain top.

I think my needs are a bit different from yours so take all of this with a big grain of salt.

First, I have casual at-home go-tos, and then "out in the world" (smart casual) go-tos. For at home, interesting tees or sleeveless woven tops. By "interesting" tees, I mean tees with some kind of pattern or design detail. I mostly wear these with shorts but if it were cooler (ha!!) I might pair them with crops or jeans. The main thing is that these should be machine washable. I air dry them but no ironing for these.

My "out in the world" go-tos are tops that are maybe more feminine and work well with my go-to tube skirts. They might or might not require ironing. I really love a sort of trapeze like shape but it isn't always easy to find, especially with a higher neckline and in natural fibres (which I prefer).

I do wear a lot of black, and it's definitely a cause for feeling like I'm in a rut in warmer weather. I sweat a lot, so there's a practical component underlying the colour choice. That said, I don't feel fab in my non-black casual tees (My Adea 3/4 tops in navy, white, and "eggplant", which is more pinky), even when I dress up the look with a scarf. Even though I have a casual lifestyle, the look strikes me as too casual and lacking thought.

This summer, these NYDJs. I have several in different colors and prints and have really loved them. For once I don't feel bad about duplicating because in my mind at least, the prints are different enough they don't look like the same top unless someone is really keeping track of me. In which case, that would be something different to worry about! Yes, they are polyester, but amazing anyway. They don't feel too hot to me and I live in sauna territory.

I also love these JJ tees but I think they are sold out, sorry.

i've only owned the 1st find, the EF jersey, 3 weeks, and I've already worn it twice...its got an easy, yet elevated silhouette, and the fabric is yummy.

the uniqlo tees are a soft knit that is more of a jersey than a plain basic cotton tee....dress up or down really well.

the BCBG top is something new to me this year...I own the find below and a darker colored shirt...these are lightweight tees that can be worn alone or layer easily... the SA told me that they bring in new ones with each collection. they are expensive at the BCBG store, but I've found them on amazon for a lot less.

the final find is basically a tank top with a dressed up hem that takes it from boring to interesting. the silhouette is flowy, without being oversized.

In the summer, I usually go for white tops in linen or cotton. They look fresh in our epic heat and humidity, and make me feel cool. Right now I'm wearing a Michael Kors tee with some great black cargos that I just found at Costco for $20, and I'm feeling pretty fab.

I have a few lace blouses that I reach for over and over, even though none of them are quite perfect. They add a bit of dressy-ness and texture when I'm wearing something that is otherwise pretty simple.

For summer, I'm with Sterling - sleeveless tops, mostly woven, with some detailing or neckline something so they don't look too plain, worn alone or with a light cardigan when necessary.

For spring and fall I really like button-front shirts - something done in a nice color or subtle print, in a slightly drapey but not clingy material. I can wear them untucked over jeans, I can tuck them into skirts, I can layer them with sweaters or tank tops, I can wear them as an overshirt over a simple dress...

My lifestyle is super casual and summer is not my most fashionable season. Plus, I have very few, if any, events that require me to dress up so my tops are all super casual with a nod to boho. These simple tops paired with white crops have been my go-to uniform this season.

Right now my go to tops are tunics and "dresses worn as tunics"... worn over cropped pants (flares or straights) or full length flared jeans. Like Una, I have both warm weather and cold weather versions. I am hooked on this look. I also wear shorter tanks and tees (often with hi-lo hems) on the days I wear boyfriend jeans or bermuda shorts.

With wide legged trousers and skirts, I like to tuck in a silk long sleeved blouse. With skinnies, I wear more flowy, boho inspired blouses or knit tunics or as Rachy said a long gilet/vest over the blouse.

I have some lacy Isaac Mizrahi tunic tops, bought from QVC, that I really like and wear frequently.
