Late to this, but fun thread. I like:

- Stripes
- Plaid
- Houndstooth/herringbone
- Florals as long as they are “my” florals, nothing ditsy or pastel
- Ombre
- Marbled
- Geometric
- Abstract/painterly
- Argyle
- Fair Isle
- Reptile and some animal prints
- Some camo — not traditional colors but in versions that look more watery
- Nature inspired — the effect is floral but I seem to have a number of prints that are actually butterflies, and I like birds and fish motifs too.

I love prints and am always attracted to them, but I am not buying as many prints these days and I’ve gotten more selective about them. I like a wide variety but I’m picky about the details. If they don’t really speak to me, I leave them behind.

Not a huge fan of polka dots, ditsy prints, or whimsical ones for my style.

JUDY I also am off camo since a war started 800kms away and we have actual war refugees living in our town. I edited out my camo pants and a vest. Now just left with a cotton skirt which is very cool in the hot weather and have never seen a soldier in a camo skirt ;). I don't think I will ever get a new camo piece again. I don't mind others wearing it though. Also I am a vegetarian and never got the hunting association previously but that too puts me off.

Judy---that blouse sounds super practical, yet super noticeable at the same time. I had an actual bucket purse from Japan that was shibori--had it for years. Today it would be quite trendy!

I thought I leaned heavily towards all solid colours, but answering this question has me rethinking my position. Certain prints are VERY me, and they tend to be worn most in certain seasons.

Stripes -- especially in summer. Breton stripes in tops of all weights and sleeve lengths, as well as 2 skirts and numerous bags. Narrower vertical stripes (shirts, short dresses, pants).

Tartans and checks (including houndstooth and glen check) -- year round, but especially in fall.

Polka dots (almost always navy and white) mostly come out in spring.

Also a few florals, mostly the kind with dark background. Following the seasonal distribution, they show up most in winter, when the festive season and the concert season provide more opportunities for dressing up/ leaning the more romantic, even baroque, aspect of my Gentlewoman persona.

Fun thread, Carla, thanks for starting it!

Pattern maximalist reporting for duty! Large-scale florals, stripes, and polka dots are the most abundant, followed by animal print, paisley, and plaid. Geometric, ombre, and marbled patterns are also represented in my wardrobe.

I love patterns and have them all! Ombre, blurred, tie dyed, florals, ditsy and large-scale florals, lace, eyelet, dyed denim, checks, stripes, animals - from leopard print to leopards in the print... I also like patterned accessories!

I don't have a particular pattern that I don't wear but gravitate to items that have an element of pretty in them - for example the striped and plaid dresses are a feminine way to wear these patterns.

Paisley and argyle are my favorite but I have a ton of floral items because they are so easily accessible. Fun patterns also make my heart happy. Flamingos, campers, butterflies, stars and even a moth tee shirt among others.

Oh, this thread is making me feel like I need more print clothing in my life...and closet ! So much depends on the size, and color of it all, doesn't it...but I'd like to have some gingham, plaid, argyle too. Even some gentle polka dots.

Once upon a time I wore lots of prints, but I have tended toward solid colors the last decade or so. Always a few striped Breton shirts tho. Carol, last summer I purchased a simple Shibori like print blouse (not actually hand dyed) that I have worn so much.

I lost my appetite for animal prints a long time ago and now, even camo too. This might sound silly, but when I actually saw camo wearing military...very fit soldiers...in line at the grocery store a few years ago, since then wearing it hasn't felt quite right. I wasn't even wearing it on that very day, and I know this probably doesn't make rational sense, but I just have to go with my gut feeling. I think we have even discussed this before here. I mean, we aren't all Scottish and we wear plaid and Argyle (though my family does have it's own tartan!). And Breton tops originated with the French Navy didn't they? I read that they wore stripes so if they fell overboard they could find them in the water...? My feelings may well change again, as feelings often do. And why not enjoy ALL the prints.

A few years ago I would have said stripes and floral. But more recently I have added less florals. I like polka dots, geometric and paisley. I rarely lean to plaid but have one pair of pants that I love.

I am a bit moody with patterns and can find it hard to know why I like one and not another. Small scale florals are one that I don’t like as much on me.

I love prints--most of all, the classic ones. And especially an exact, distinct one, like on a Burberry scarf.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but some of the traditional ones around the world have an organic, handmade feel, because they are handmade. Like batik, or Japanese shibori.

I love cow print, and couldn't get over this corset by Miaou. But at $295, it's hard to rationalize.

Florals of most kinds. More colors versus 1-2 colors are better and what I tend to lean toward. I will wear just about any floral so long as the scale and colors feel right. Ditzy prints probably aren't my best, but I'll wear them if I love the item's overall color, style, and vibe.

Tartan plaids. They have to be visually complex, not just plain 2 or 3 color Buffalo check style. I find them really striking, especially in berries, deep crimson, etc.

Paisley. As long as it's really rich with more colors and visual complexity, I will wear it. Not my favorite compared to florals, but I have purchased some for this autumn and am curious to try it.

Abstract prints. Items like what Anthropologie used to offer from 2005-2015 or so. Don't have it currently in my wardrobe but really like it when it's the right piece.

Ethnic prints. I don't own atm, but enjoy these as well.

Stranded knitting and larger Fair Isle motifs. These are more of a knitting thing, but they fall under print, I think. Another favorite.

Animal. Leopard is my top fave. I won't pass on warm colored print in zebra or snake skin.

Tortoiseshell. For accessories. I love the warmth and deep smoldering glow of a rich tortie eye frame or accessory. One of my cats is even a chocolate tortie ha! :)

Fruit prints. Mostly apples, peaches and pears. Don't own anything RTW in this print currently but bought some pear print fabric that I'm excited to sew up. I like 1-2 pieces for a touch of whimsy.

Herringbone. This might be more of a texture? I do love seeing it in fabrics.

Single "mono" prints -- like a giant tiger's head or pear knit into a sweater. Have plans to knit one of these for my own.

Camo. I like it best in warm olives. Just adore it for activewear. Idk why.

I rarely wear or choose stripes. I have one striped dress and I like it. I prefer stripes to be diagonal or very subtle pinstripe. I love stripes on others but I always feel a little weird when I try wearing them -- much as I really, really want to love wearing them.

Suz, thanks for the toile link. The last time I wanted a summer toile skirt, I found one at Ann Taylor! It’s cream and turquoise and an absolute favorite. I did check again this summer and Wolf and Badger has a surprisingly large number of toile pieces from independent designers. So it seems to have a bit of traction.

Janet reminds me that I forgot argyle in my list!

I was thinking last night that it would have been easier to name the patterns I do NOT wear:

Ditsy florals.
Large polka dots (will wear tiny pin dots -- go figure!)

There are a limited number of patterns I wear- stripes, leopard, some geometric patterns and larger spaced florals. I like plaid in theory but rarely wear it; I think I have one plaid shirt.

Patterns I don’t buy or wear include polka dots, gingham and small florals.

I like florals the best for sure. I also like peacocks (one dress), butterflies (had one tunic, later donated), tartan (one shirt), houndstooth (one shirt), snakeskin.
Two of my favourites have the florals rather blurred- one is even called “blurred floral” and the other “hazy”
floral I think!
I have 2 striped tops but they are not my favourite.
I don’t own gingham but have in the past, I had one red and one blue pair of gingham trousers about 15-20 years ago. I did like them, wore them a lot.

There aren't many patterns I don't like, at least in theory, and/or in the right colourway. But the ones I wear most are:

Stripes (duh, again!)
Tartan (especially in fall/ winter)
Gingham (in summer)

Wide spaced florals or botanicals
Paisley (especially in a pattern that mixes paisley with floral)

I like leopard print in cool colours, too, and snake print.
I really like toile, but you don't see it that often most years. There's an fascinating post about it here at Articles of Interest:

I also like some abstract floral patterns, and batik type patterns, especially geometric.

My novelty print of choice is Siamese cats. I have two blouses featuring this cat print.

I like to wear low-contrast patterns and have a few floral-ish flowy knit pants that are a signature style in the summer with boots. Otherwise I wear patterns sparingly and don't have a particular favorite. I own one of each of plaid, stripes, paisley, tie dye, birds, cats, big leaves-plenty of options when the mood strikes.

Hmm, stripes, polka dots, zebra, certain florals and abstracts, paisley and plaid. I am sure there are more too.

Team stripes please!

If not stripes, I add pattern with scarves - floral, bandanna, maps (a favorite).

This year I’m trying camo - Gap’s cotton barrel leg drawstring pants. Very comfy and I like the way the dark green camo mixes with stripes and greys.

In 2020 I bought a McQueen dress in a very different pattern - sort of woodcuts or tattoo inspired.

Not a fan of animal prints.
