I am similar to many of you. Underwear socks tanks tees and often shirts and dresses are washed after one wear along with exercise gear. Jeans skirts and toppers and sweaters as needed. I am out and about a lot and do get hot and sweaty so frequent laundering of tees as needed.

I rarely dry clean, and mostly line dry my clothes either inside or outside. I have a dryer and use it when it is wet or too cold. I am always surprised how few people line dry their clothes in the US even in suitable homes and climates. I know in apartments and central cities it can be more of a challenge, or in wintry climates, but my friends in Texas and Oklahoma and Oregon say it is not the done thing in some neighbourhoods.

SandyG, good point about drought. Although I'm not experiencing one, the issue is in my mind as my hometown in Brazil is going through a severe water shortage. I launder often, and as I do it, I do feel a sense of guilt for all the water and electricity consumed, and waste (soapy water) produced in the process.

I guess I'm the outlier. I wear my dark skinny jeans and black jeans almost daily in suburban life and only wash them every few months. I steam them out to freshen the fabric and fit.

Though not RATE, but partly due to drought, I've changed my formerly squeaky clean ways where even trying on an item would get it tossed into the laundry. Tees, sweaters and toppers get cleaned as needed; I usually get a few wears out of them. Panties and gear 1x is normal.

Ha, I feel like the husbands may be getting a bum rap here. Just to even the tables a little bit, my friend who coined the word "floordrobe" is the one who has said floordrobe, and her husband is the neat freak. ;)

ETA: And my husband meticulously irons all his own shirts, every week. I think I iron once a year.

Underwear, tights and socks are washed after each wearing. Camisoles after two wearings, and bras are washed every two weeks but I rotate through a handful. Jeans are washed when they bag out, are visibly dirty, or after 3-4 wearings.

My play/barn clothes get washed much more frequently for obvious reasons, but when I get home from my office job, I hang up work clothes in an area outside my closet where they can air out before I put them away. I tend to leave them airing overnight, then put them away the next morning while I pull out new clothes for the day.

I'm becoming addicted to cashmere for its easy care, and all of my sweater washing is a soak and swish in Eucalan, spin dry in the washer, and then lay flat. Washed at night, they're ready to go the next morning. I recently bought this rack recently and it's perfect for hand washed items:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/produ.....#038;psc=1

As for DH, count him in the already-worn-but-not-ready-for-laundry clothes camp. Neither of us throw clothes on the floor, ever, but he does have a tendency to hang his clothes on the bedpost. Thankfully, he uses a guest room to dress in, so I don't have to see the posts festooned with dress shirts!

KM...Probably a lot has to do with the standards you are brought up with and not everyone has a brain wired for keeping order. We probably don't have a huge influence on changing our husbands....although it doesn't hurt them to consider our wishes and make some effort. That is just being a mannered and nice person. We can teach our children well though.....it is a long road with them. Start small with your daughter....eg...hang her towel after bathing, toys are put away after play, dirty clothes can be dropped in their washing basket etc. Simple things they can learn at three or four. Then expect a little more each year as she develops. Monkey see, monkey do, so encourage your husband to set a good example. I'm sure my daughters-in-law of the future will be thankful I made the prolonged effort to teach my DSs to be considerate, competent and tidy in the upbringing.
Yes line drying does call for more ironing and I know the pull down washing lines you wrote about....very useful in small spaces.

Similar in a lot of ways. I have large hooks on the wall behind bedroom door where I hang jeans, tops & evening loungewear that are worn several times before laundering. The major thing there is to have discipline not to forget what's hanging, pull something else out, and have too many outfits on the go--it has been helpful to see that I am happying wearing same things a lot if I like the comfort and fit, so only need 2-3 options in this category (by season) , so they will take up less room on hooks and in drawers.

I have a PJ hook and some other small hooks in areas of the closet to hang cami's and things I will -re-wear launder after a few wears (also dictated by season, weather) and a small set of plastic drawers, also in closet, which allows separating laundered items from "on the go" items. The hooks are helpful when changing clothes or I can put an item back on its hanger and hang on hook for a bit before puttiing back on the rail.

Underwear, hosiery, socks are always washed after one wear. Bras come out to about once every 3-5 wears (or every 7-10 days). I'm trying to go easier on that, because I read articles how it is better to wash them every few weeks. But I can't quite wrap my head around that.

If I've worn hosiery under my jeans (which I've done every day this winter, it seems), I wash them every 2-3 wears. Again, that's probably overwashing, but I can't quite bring myself not to!

Tops or sweaters that I have worn, and want to wear again before washing, I drape over a slacks hanger, and set them to one side. If it has been a few weeks, and I notice I haven't gotten around to wearing the item again, into the laundry it goes. For me, it's because I work with costumes that people try to preserve by not overwashing - only to find that perspiration, deodorant, and makeup have left permanent staining or deteriorated the fabric. So I never let worn items sit for more than a few weeks without some light laundering.

Stuff I haven't worn in a long time, such as winter sweaters throughout warmer months, I find I have to re-wash because I get itchy, otherwise.

Like Angie, I hang most things to dry, unless they do better in the dryer, then I use a low or medium heat setting.

With regards to the BF, I do pick up after him - and I ask him if he wants to re-wear something again before it's laundered. He's good about eventually picking up after himself - once there is a mountain of stuff. But he has a very stressful job, and often, hanging up a shirt or re-folding a sweater to wear again, just isn't at the forefront of his mind. Or picking up his dirty stuff off the floor next to the hamper and putting it IN the hamper. ( I don't know why, but this always makes me LAUGH. And he's good about putting the toilet seat down, so I figure, better to pick my battles and enjoy my victories where I get them). Picking up his clothes isn't a problem for me. It takes me maybe all of two minutes, and it makes his life a little easier.

DEB and Angie, I wish I could say the same about my husband... re: respecting my wish for cleanliness and neatness in the house. He's gotten a little better over the (many) years, but the piles are still there.

As for my daughter, who will turn 4 soon, it remains to be seen. From the posts here--I'm thinking of shevia!--it looks like I should work on educating her (I do try, but so far, judging from how she treats her toys, she seems to take after her daddy.)

I wish I had room for a permanent air-dry line or rack. In Brazil, where I grew up, this is pretty standard. Every apartment or house has a separate laundry room, no matter how small the apartment or the room, and laundry racks that you raise up and down with cords so they can hang up high in the air and not take up a lot of room. But then again, Brazil has mild winters, and these laundry rooms have very big windows that stay open for the most part so fresh air circulates and humidity doesn't build up. Most clothes are hung to dry; only items like blankets or things you need in a hurry are put in the dryer.

I am trying to see if I can install one of those foldable racks in one of my bathrooms.

There's only one issue with line drying: clothes then need to be ironed! No?

Whites, tops, shirts, workout wear, undies and socks are laundered after every wear. Bras, camisoles, jeans usually get two, maybe three wears in milder weather and washed everyday in the Australian heat. Sweaters depend....perhaps 4 or 5 wears. Used are never put back in with clean but they have a door rack to hang and air upon. Nothing is left on the floor except footwear and my family respect this and know Mama bear will have a little growl if I see otherwise. If I fly or frequent public places or transport, I most definitely wash all worn items and myself at the end of the day. Approximately 10% of antibiotic resistant bacterium are acquired in the community now which encourages my cleanliness. Neat, organised and pretty clean keeps me peaceful and happy and my family respect this.

Undies and hose after one wear, bras and camisoles get more than one wear usually. My cotton socks need washing after one wear, but I don't wash my wool socks that often. Everything else gets assessed after wear and I then decide. I don't own a dryer and don't miss one, but that means washing results in a laundry rack cluttering up my kitchen. I have a small wardrobe, if I would wash everything even if there's still wear in it I would need to have that laundry rack permanently installed... Oh and used bottoms go underneath my hanging items in the wardrobe and I have one half of a shelf for already worn tops.

I use sight (bagging or any dirt) and smell to decide when to wash things, and air things out before putting them back in the closet. I also change clothes for activities frequently during the day. my 'work wear' needs to withstand hard physical labor and dust and dirt so I don't wear any fashionable clothes for work, so my nicer clothes only get worn a few hours a day. I do wash underwear and exercise tops after every wear.

Heh, but this winter I started wearing my warmer socks more than once between washes. I had a shortage of really toasty ones, so I figured out that if I wore a thinner cotton sock inside, the outer sock actually didn't need washing, just the liner. ;)

Smalls, socks, hose - after one wear. Gear after 1 wear. Other items when they get visibly dirty or smell. I sometimes end up showering twice a day due to workouts, so it is a pretty unusual day for me to feel sweaty or grotty in my clothes. I wear an apron when I cook, and it might go in the wash after 2 wears, though!

My clothes get a once over, before I hang them up again. I might brush them out, or use a damp cloth to wipe a spot.

Like others here, I have an extensive line system in my laundry room for drying clothes instead of using the dryer.

As part of 'hygiene' I do use a disinfectant wipe followed by a leather conditioner on my purse/bag and leather gloves monthly.

I personally only wash my underwear and socks after every wear. Everything else goes by my sense of smell and sight. I don't like to put it back in the closet after it is worn and usually hang it on the coat/bag rack or hook it on the outside of the closet. My daughters, however, seem to think that everything they touch needs to be tossed into the hamper immediately (easier than putting it away of course). My son generates about 10% of their laundry despite my washing his clothes after every wear (except jeans). I plan on making them do their own laundry soon to put a stop to this.

Interesting! What's up with the guys and their piles of already-worn-but-not-ready-for-laundry clothes? I always thought it was a peculiarity of my husband's, and it's funny to see that there are others like him.

Diana, I go back and forth between picking up after my husband (because I like things clean and organized) and just letting his messes pile on (because he is, after all, a grown man). And you're lucky re: body smells!

Many of you mentioned that frequent washes ruin clothes... and it's true. The trigger for me to write this post was the folding of my laundry today; as I contemplated a t-shirt that's barely three months old and is already faded, and another (a bit older) that has some holes, I began to think that maybe I'm washing things too often. I don't think others would notice any bad smells coming out of me if I re-wore my t-shirts once or twice, but it bothers me when I put them on.

I usually wear jeans more than once, but most everything else gets washed if I wore it all day. I manage to get food or dirt or pen marks or something on my clothes most days by the time it's PJ time. I have a couple of hooks on my freestanding mirror where I can hang jeans that I'm waiting to wear again, or I can leave them on the 'shoe-tying stool' in our closet (not my DH's favorite). I'll also do that with bras I only wore for a few hours, letting them air out a bit before wearings. My bras and sweaters get washed on the hand-wash cycle of the washer and air-dried on a rack; everything else needs to be able to survive the dryer. (I've got a few dry clean only items; a few years ago I used to have none.)

Everyone has their "tolerance level" of what they think is clean, but I think we over clean our clothes and they fade and wear out too soon. Underwear of course most of us want to be clean every day, but other then that, it depends. In the winter I clean items less frequently then the summer. If it is not soiled or has an odor, it gets cleaned.

I'm with Angie, just a little messier. I don't wash my jeans or tops unless they are dirty or smelly - especially work clothes with come off when I get home and see very little of the world. When I travel I wear the same pants to and from destination on the plane if I don't have access to laundry.

The only thing I can add here is that one of the best features of my house is my laundry room drip dry rack. Just about everything hangs dry on the rack instead of going into the dryer. I am convinced that keeping clothes out of the dryer saves them from deteriorating, and aging quickly.

I only clean clothing when it is visibly dirty or smells of something unpleasant. With the obvious exception of undergarments and socks, which get washed every time they are worn. By the way, is anyone here going to admit that they wear their underwear (besides bras) and socks multiple times before washing them? :-)

I'm with Diana and Angie. I often shake my head at the laundry collection in our house. My DH and DD account for about 3/4 of the laundry in any given week - maybe even more. The only things I wash of mine are lingerie , pyjamas, sweats, workout wear and socks. The rest is usually dry-cleaned.

Aside from underwear/tights/socks that I only wear once per use, I only launder clothes after a single wash if they are soiled-sweat, spills, dirt from visiting a dog park, or just looking limp/less fresh. Like Angie mentions, I find that frequent laundering is harder on my clothes than when I launder every few uses or so. I don't wear scents very often. Knit tops and workout pants get laundered most frequently. Dresses, skirts and dry clean items I try to spot clean if possible instead of laundering the whole garment.

Fascinating. HAH, Diana. Floordrobe. Brilliant.

There is absolutely NO piling up of clothes - anywhere - at the Cox Castle. I am very strict about that. I am a neat freak and Greg is very respectful of my needs.

I do not wash items that have been worn against the skin once - unless the smells are unsavoury (food, smoke and body odour). Underwear, hose and socks - yes, into the wash only after one wear - but not bras and camisoles. I find that over washing garments is bad for them. I do not put our clothes into the dryer either, (accept for undies, workout wear and sleep wear). It ruins the quality. And I LOVE the smell of my perfume that lingers on my clothes - so we are quite different here, K.M.

We fold and hang back clothes that can be worn again (and are still fresh smelling). I re-iron creased items regularly. I dry clean a lot too. Things look very pristine and crisp in our wardrobe, and it's sweet smelling. My happy place.

I usually wash my clothes after one wear. I accept the fact that I probably overwash things, but I feel better about it. I know that every time I reach into the closet, whatever I want to wear is clean and pressed.

I have one exception. I tend to wear robes many times before I wash them. I think I wash them when they begin "to feel dirty." I just know when it is time. I don't put my robes back in the closet. They are draped over the back of a chai.

I'm like others here and wash things worn against the skin after only one time. Pants that aren't noticeably dirty or bagged out, I hang back up. I don't try to keep any separation from worn or unworn items. My husband hangs all his worn-but-not-needing-to-be-washed-clothes on a chair in the bedroom, which is better than the floor, but still not my favorite. It makes the chair unusable for actually sitting.

Knickers, tights and socks get washed after each wear along with work clothes, I work with kids so my clothes always have that school smell and I'm always getting sneezed on and worse! Leggings generally bag out after one wear so straight in the wash basket. I shower in the evening so pyjamas get worn 3 or 4 times, same with Bras and camis, jeans a couple of wears as long as they're not obviously dirty or smelly. I wash nearly everything on a quick or delicate wash and air dry so I don't really worry about too much washing causing wear and tear x

I have no idea if it really works, (but it does to me), but I spritz some laundress fabric fresh on once-worn items that I intend to wear again before washing, then hang to air out for a day or two. When I do put the item away again, I store inside out to remind myself it's not "fresh" (typically I wear things 2xs before washing unless it's a sweater, jacket or dry cleanable pants)
isabel- great tip about storing sweaters inside out. It would have never occurred to me that it would minimize lint, but now I am going to store them all that way!

Ha, my husband does the pile of things on the floor too. We call it his "floordrobe". I try to get him to at least put it on the dresser but I have to admit I am not very successful. And I refuse to pick up after him - he is a grown man and can do it himself. =P

As for my "system," it is pretty similar to yours, I think. I wash underwear, hosiery, and socks after one wear. I consider leggings (but not jeggings) hosiery so they get washed after one wear too even though they may not need it. Things like camis and tees that are touching my skin usually get washed after one or two wears, depending on how hot it is and how much I've sweated. (I don't wear perfume or deodorant - and have almost no natural body odor - so I don't have that issue to contend with). Other things get washed if they are dirty. I use the smell test, as I have a super-duper sense of smell.

I fold/hang most things back up with the rest after I wear it, mostly because I don't have room to have a separate area for the already-worn items. The exception is bras, which I hang over the top of a wardrobe door to air out.
