I like reading everyone's thoughts and doing this reflection to think about what works for me so hopefully I get a bit wiser about purchasing every year.

My best of list:
Eileen Fisher linen cardigan. This cardigan made 75% of my summer wardrobe work. It was the perfect finishing piece over sleeveless dresses or long sleeveless blouses, and worked with jeans as well as with business clothes. Lesson learned: Sometimes paying full price for EF is worth it!

Long Vest: I love this, simple as that. Perfect third piece for someone who can run warm and long enough it actually covers my rear, so it gives me more options for my ponte knit slacks etc. I love that it's woven and not knit so it has crispness and structure.

ModCloth tunic: I discovered ModCloth this year as a new resource for plus sized, fashionable clothing. This simple tunic has become workhorse for me - it unorphaned a skirt, it works with skirts and slim pants and it's a color I've been adding to my wardrobe after many years of being off burgundy. And it's LONG enough: I'm 5'6" with a long torso and it's so hard to find tunic topics as long as I prefer them.

My "learning opportunity"

This pink Eloquii skirt in a new silhouette. It fit like a dream but I quickly discovered might like a fit and flare skirt or I might like hot pink, but both of them together was just too much. It's gone to a new home.

My best were my cognac boots (Steve Madden) and my burgundy boots (Bondo). I love both pairs and I've been wearing them a lot, every chance I get. Even though the Bondos have 3" heels, I find them very comfortable, and they give me a very saucy attitude.

My worst buys were those I got at Nordstrom Rack. Somehow everything I buy at that store seems great at the time, and then once I get it home i realize it just wasn't meant to be and it ends up getting returned. I need to really figure out what's going on in my head when I shop there so I can break the cycle of mistakes.

2015 was a stressful year for me at work...in an effort to simplify and focus, I mostly stuck to a very plain uniform of black trousers, solid or printed blouse and black jacket with heels or booties. Although I certainly wasn't winning any awards for being fashion forward, it did help me feel put together and polished every day. Although as a new manager, I was tearing my hair out on a regular basis, at least I knew I looked the part. :-) So black Gap Perfect Trousers and black ponte NYDJs were my best buys in the work department.

My best purchases for life outside of work were three basics I picked up at the Gap - a blue denim jacket, a white denim jacket, and an olive utility jacket. I wore all of them on a regular basis, the blue denim usually with linen trousers, the olive jacket with blue jeans or black yoga pants. The white denim jacket was purchased purely because so many individuals here loved their white denim and I found one on a super sale for less than $30. I was very surprised by how versatile it was, and wore it over spaghetti-strap sundresses in summer as well as over turtlenecks and fitted sweaters in the fall.

Worst purchases: Cropped denim flares (I felt like a fashion victim when I put them on) culottes (ditto) and a long knit vest (regardless of how it looked, it made me feel frumptastic so into the donation bag it went.)

I've only bought a handful of things this past year and, luckily, I'm happy with all of them. Best by far, though, is a very recent purchase: tall, black boots with a small heel that I've been looking for for some time. I've been stalking this particular pair for a few months, and finally they went on sale at half price - can't believe my luck!

Fun thread! My best purchases were a gorgeous Alexis Bittar cuff and my wine-colored Kate Spade satchel, which brings me joy every day as I go to work because it's a color and shape that I love. My worst . . . probably a leather belt that I thought would be a staple but that quickly made its way to a consignment shop.

Best purchases

The Motto Betty belt has been the absolute best purchase I've made all decade! It has allowed me to create so many different skirt top outfits that I would normally be unsure of. I also bought the gunmetal orbit belt, which is similar but with more statement hardware.

The Camilla drawstring dress has been great because it's perfect for glam events, and it's very versatile. I've only worn it the basic V necked way so far, but I plan to try to wear it as a shorter dress and one shouldered this year. Video here. https://www.facebook.com/Camil.....309076393/

I took a risk with the Halogen flats, ordering them from Nordstrom in both blush and black, with substantial postage costs. I read the reviews beforehand and crossed my fingers that they would fit my ruined feet. They have been fantastic and I have worn them a lot since they arrived.

I'm not sure about worst purchases yet. I'm doing wardrobe purge version 2 soon and I suspect there will be a few items with tags remaining that will go. Ugh!

Suz, I like how you split it into categories. I should add a great travel dress to my list, too - the Everlane tee dress. Love it and can't wait for warm weather so I can wear it again. I'm not sure anyone has ever heard me say that about summer clothes before!

Love this thread!!

I made so many great purchases this year that it is going to be tough to choose. But here goes:

Best wildcard / HEWI (and deal): Danier blush moto. I bought this on style exchange from Dee. Due to our crazy mild autumn, I was wearing it as outerwear almost until Christmas! Love it. Thank you, Dee! Now I know that I love the moto style, and I also know I need a navy or ink one when I can find it.

Best wardrobe refreshers:

BR cropped jeans. I had to play with sizing (going to petite, which I never normally wear, and sizing up). Worth it for the thrill of the new.

H&M blouses-- thanks Angie and Lisa. Super easy to wear, pretty, and perfect for our warm autumn.

Hibou boots in burgundy: Again, thanks, Lisa! (Not pictured.)

Best basic workhorse: BR merino tee in navy. Wear it ALL the time. Wearing it now.

Best pretty: Club Monaco silk dress worn with Sam Edelman Okalas in golden.

Best summer workhorse sandals: Seychelles cognac retro and Franco Sarto taupe gladiators (thanks, Denise!).

Best summer travel dress: Loft retro tent-like dress. Amazing to find quality at the Loft after years of disappointment there. As Angie says, leave no retail stone unturned. I also got a fabulous cool blouse and a great tee there. Made my China travel capsule!

I sent most of my poor purchase back the way they came. One exception was this kimono topper from Aritzia. It counts among my worst purchases. Only worn a few times. There is nothing "wrong" with it. Just doesn't work well for me.

But the absolute worst purchase? You know what I am going to say, right? The infamous BUTT VEST!!!! :)

Cerinda, I almost bought that same vest and I was worried I wouldn't wear it enough, but it's so lovely that I hope you do find a few chances to wear it.

Shedev and gryffin, I love all your purchases! (No surprise there.)

My best purchases were shoes. The Converse 'shroud' wedges were so much more comfortable than I could have imagined and add a lot of pizazz to any outfit. The Atelje boots I just got a few weeks ago have been on my feet almost nonstop.

Looking through my list, I had a great shopping year with a lot of wins. The things that haven't really worked are mostly cropped tops, because I never know what to wear them with, and a pair of high-waist jeans bought to solve that problem that I find too uncomfy on my stomach. I also bought a pair of flats meant to be all-day walking shoes that somehow hurt after an hour. I sold those, at a big loss. I hate throwing money away like that.

Best: Two vests (one black/white tiny herringbone, one ivory faux fur). I find I wear them a lot on mild days because they're not too warm to wear indoors, so they make good completer pieces. Never really wore vests much until this fall. They also provide extra warmth when layered under my winter coats.

Black and white windowpane plaid "city slim" pants from Gap Outlet. A great fit on me, easy care, they have pockets (helpful at work), and they can be slightly dressy with a nice top, jewelry, and nice shoes or boots, OR they look cute with my faux leather slip-on sneakers and a graphic tee.

Various graphic tees (long and short sleeves). I really do like graphic tees, both with and without a top layer. I feel like they don't need as much accessorizing, and I really like mixing them with print pants or toppers.

Worst: Can't think of any that stand out.

Great thread!

Best: Black Birkies (Never thought I'd revisit that look) and black Aquatalia weatherproof boots (waving at Colette).

Worst: a tee I bought only because it has my favorite taupe in the print (worn once) and this boiled wool vest that just isn't the workhorse I had hoped (doesn't particularly work with my climate or the length of my winter coats)

Posting from memory because I'm traveling and don't have access to my whole list.
Hits:
I wore my white Birk knockoffs like crazy all summer (which for us lasted until October).
Jeans from Cookie Johnson, which fit my figure well and hit that current but not overly trendy vibe. I'm going to be stalking ebay for more of them in 2016.
This fall, everything available in tall from JC Penney's store lines. Being able to find stuff that's long enough without having to spend big bucks or order from a store I don't know has been really helpful.
Loafers and smoking slippers - it's been fun to go a bit afield from the ballet flats. I'm still working on the styling; they still look a bit mumsy to my eye with skirts.
Misses:
These Ecco boots (find 2). I got a great deal on them and there's nothing wrong with them, but the heel is higher in practice than I thought and I just don't reach for them as much as I did the black booties they were meant to replace. Still searching for a flat black bootie for winter that is super comfy and 12 hour day suitable.

There are probably tons more I've forgotten but overall it's been a cautious and neither spectacularly good nor bad year in clothes for me.

Best:

EF unlined wool coat - mid thigh length. Camel. I took it on a couple of business trips in December and it was perfect. A very stylish and sexy younger man told me it was a "dope" coat. That did it for me. ;)

Second - and EF silk asymetric long tunic/tank. Same trip , same sale . Makes me feel thinner and lighter. Goes with everything.

Worst:

Same as JAileen: EF skinny knit pants. Bought in July. Too short, fabric too skimpy for the cut and the colour - sort of a navy - is all wrong (not dark enough). Ticked off at spending that much and bringing them home despite thinking they were great in the fitting room.

Also : bought in January this year - two pair of booties - one cognac and one taupe. Hardly worn, and colours I didn't need. Don't make me feel fierce. Or fashionable. Lesson: listen to your inner voice and don't let outside noises influence.

Best: cable knit poncho in a slate gray from Loft Outlet that I wore so much, I duplicated in black. Warm, inexpensive, current. They get a lot of compliments and I wear them all the time.
Worst: I was seduced by the unbelievable on-sale price of a pair of black/white strappy Naot sandals that are just a wee skosh small. If I went up a size, they fell off my feet. But my toes bump the edge and I'm not sure they are all that comfortable. I also bought a pair of gearish fleece-lined cargo hiking pants at Eddie Bauer that stretch so terribly that I can literally pull them off without unbuttoning and unzipping at the end of the day. They fit fine after washing, but within hours are falling off. FAIL. Sizing down did not help. It's a fabric thing.

Fun! My best are my Eileen Fisher Allot flats with wide ankle straps. So comfortable and they get lots of compliments. I have them in " quartz" and black.
My worst is a Cosco rayon plaid shirt that is pilling badly after only a few wearings. The weave is not tight enough to keep the fabric from catching on things either.

I made some really great purchases this year thanks to YLF! Honestly, it was my best clothing purchase year ever.

The all-star work horse for me are the Aquatalia Sophie boots. These were a wild card purchase during NAS and I was still on the fence about them as fall approached. I can't remember the first day I decided to wear them but I never looked back.

The Brenna leather jacket was somewhat of a HEWI for me. It replaced several oldies that just didn't fit right anymore. Because we had such a wonderful fall I was able to wear this regularly. I wore it both without and with the collar. Even better, my Mom thought it was a totally different jacket when I wore it with the collar.

A special shout goes out to Marc Fisher Yale booties, Marc Jacobs turtleneck, Sam Edelman Edith booties and Brahmin Duxbury Satchel. They all make me so happy!

My worst purchases were a long duster cardigan because I just didn't feel great in it and two thrifted items, all inexpensive.

I can't wait to see what 2016 brings!

Yay! fun thread.

I didn't buy a lot this year, but what I did buy was mostly successful. Probably the most useful has been a black mixed-media jacket that's styled like a jean jacket but actually made of waxed cotton with leather cuffs and hem. I'm not normally a fan of jean jackets, but for some reason this one goes with everything and I love it. :)

My worst was actually an accident: I put a pair of new Rag and Bone ankle-length jeans in the wash, on hot, with the towels and quite a lot of bleach. The jeans were fine before. Now, some of the dark indigo has faded out, which annoys me -- and worse, they are stiff and won't soften up! I might have to throw them out. They are super uncomfortable. :(

Best: 2 floral tube skirts, 2 lace tank tops, black damask trench, white t-shirt with bicycle image, red lightweight hoody, leopard slip on sneakers

I wore these items over and over and over - and still reach for them...

Worst:
Crop top sweaters (interesting as an experiment in proportion, but with rectangle tendencies, not my best look - and cold back/waist if worn without a layer)
Pointy toe slip on sneakers-would buy again, but in better fabrication - synthetic made my feet sweaty and uncomfortable
Fitted jacket that I thought was sporty luxe, but was really mummsy

So many favorite purchases:
1. Theory Selata Blazer - my new "long" black jacket. Perfection.
2. Coach Elise glasses - geek chic statement frames, very happy
3. NYDJ geometric blazer - great summer jacket in heavy rotation
4. Madewell Perfect Leather moto - it is and only 5 years of looking. A major HEWI
5. EF long anorak - count on EF to have the one thing I can't find. Love.
6. EF high collar suri alpaca coat - perfect interesting warm coat that slips easily over blazers and bulky layers. Another HEWI.
7. Valentino rockstud caged flats - morton's neurma says goodbye heels. If I am to be in flats forever for dress wear I am going out in style. They take a small orthotic and are actually comfortable. An uber splurge but so happy.
8. EF long silk cami - the perfect underlayer and one of the biggest work horses in my wardrobe. Must duplicate. Feels heavenly on.

Worst purchases:
1. Aquatalia oralie boots, Uggs Cecile rain boots - my new morton's neuroma doesn't like them, although they were divinely comfortable before it came. They are in a holding zone. Currently, I am trying on Dansko - anyone with fussy feet the Dansko Lucille's are heavenly. Waiting on the dansko candace snow boots. Tough having to revamp a new mini boot collection for winter!!

Best: BR ponte moto jacket in black. I feel put together whenever I am wearing it and I love the structure...it's really thick.

Worst: lightweight khaki/olive green pants. These were supposed to be my summer alternative to shorts but I sized down thinking for sure I'd lose those pesky 5 lbs that made them too uncomfortable to wear. Six months later, those 5 lbs are still hanging around grrrr.

My best: navy Timberland boots. I bought them this summer before I heard of the Godzilla El Nino. They have been wonderful in the bad weather we've been having, keeping my feet warm and dry.

My worst: Eileen Fisher skinny knit pants. They made me look like a clown.

Great thread! It is very helpful to summarize last year's best and worst.
The best were the two pairs of shoes I bought, both cost more than I would usually spend, and both became workhorses. The blue chrysanthemum Birkis just make me happy, and the Keen boots have been keeping my fussy feet happy for going on eight months of frequent wear (the hit of citron green is a bonus).

Worst purchase was a pair of gear/rain pants that were a great "deal", but are just too snug to wear over jeans.

My best were the pieces of my 5 piece. This was a great year for footwear for me.

1. AS 98 Minuet

2. Ash Jet

3. Nick K Nova jacket

4. James jeans red coated leggings

5. Nick K dress

6. best of summer, Ecco Damara sandal. I'm so glad I kept looking after the ones from Nordstrum were so big.

My worsts were most of what I got thrifting, I did get a couple pairs of jeans that got a lot of wear.

So hard to choose, but these five items are some of my favorites.

1. BR wolf sweater - very warm, well made, soft, non-itchy, flattering fit and an adorable wolf.

2. Sorel wedge boot - practical, warm, comfortable, and a bit interesting with the color blocking.

3. Poppy print midi skirt. Much more vibrant than in the photo. Gets tons of compliments. So ladylike and pretty.

4. Orange long vest. Love it with shorts and skinny pants/jeans. Great drama for the warmer weather.

5. Jeffrey Campbell loafers. I actually bought them in white too. Comfortable and sharp looking.

For worst purchases, I guess a maxi dress I bought on clearance and can't return. Never wore but maybe next summer - we shall see. Also a couple pair of LOFT pants that I wore once, then lost weight and couldn't wear again. None of these items were very pricey so I don't feel too bad.

I love this thread!

Here are my best:

1. Cozy knit dress bought in a little boutique on vacation in Quebec City
2. Sweatery poncho/cape, which I am wearing all the time in this cold weather
3. Target olive vest, which has become a real workhorse!
4. Cobalt ankle pants, where have you been all my life?
5. I bought these cap-toe pumps in both cream-and-black and black-and-cobalt, and almost returned the black-and-cobalt ones. So glad I didn't because I've worn the heck out of them!
6. Sole Society ankle-strap pumps refreshed everything I wore them with!

Worst:

Vince dress that didn't fit, and I couldn't return it because I missed the return window. Anybody want to buy it?

My best purchase was this Rose Garden Kimono Blouse from Anthro. I love the color and the way it fits. It's one of the few poly pieces I own and has held up well. Though I love how easy-care it is, it did remind me that I prefer the naturals: cotton, linen and silk.
