Gretchen - I think we have similar tastes in books. I finished the Kingmaker series a few months ago, I've read everything Nalini Singh has written and I'm working my way through Ilona Andrews backlog - just finished the 2nd book in the Kate Daniels series. I recently started the Immortals After Dark series by Kresley Cole and I think it's perfect escapism for my life right now.

Peri - I read the Starless Sea last month. I read 2/3 of it and then had to start over. It made much more sense the 2nd time through. I'm generally fairly blind to symbolism in books and that book is just chock full of symbols.

I've read the Dune series several times and it gets weirder and weirder the more books you read. Now when I reread I usually stop after the first 2.

I like historical mysteries. Right now I am reading “The Murder Stone” by Charles Todd that takes place in an English village in the WWI times.
Religious: “Cloud of the Unknowing “ a contemplative classic and kind of mystic.

I finished Golden in Death, JD Robb's latest mystery. I felt like it was light on all the aspects that made the series unique - the future setting and all the futuristic aspects. But this is number 50 or something crazy so I guess it makes sense she's running out of ideas. I'm not sure I'll try to keep up with the series anymore.

I've got several titles on my Kindle from the library right now, but I'm not doing well on concentrating on them.

How about y'all; anyone spend their Easter reading?

I finished The Poppy War - recommend if you like fantasy and adventure. It's basically a coming-of-age fantasy retelling of Chinese history up through WWII and the beginning of a series. It is pretty visceral/violent with the scenes of battle, though.

Also flew through Midnight Riot, the first in the Rivers of London series. It's a London police mystery but it turns out magic is real. Really well written and engaging.

My place in the queue for the new JD Robb has come up - proof that we're all sitting at home reading more than usual, as when I first added the hold a few weeks ago it estimated I'd be waiting 6 months!

12 years a slave is a riveting read, can see why it was made into a award winning movie. Also highly recommend The Help if you haven't seen the film and the trilogy 'Darkness, Dawn and Daylight' by Eli Wiesel, the famed Holocaust survivor. Also book versions of Centennial, Rich Man Poor Man, The Immigrants (from the 80's?) all excellent in my biased opinion Anyone a fan of the gangster films of the 30's/40's Cagney by Cagney is top notch. If you're on facebook, please check out the heartfelt and beautifully written posts (rather short story form) on The Pongo Fund that were written by the founder, Larry Chusid. He is an amazingly talented writer and they don't hassle you for $. But keep a tissue box nearby and don't be suprised if you decide to help.

I just finished A spanner in the works, which is about a woman who started the first all female garage in Australia, in the 1920s.

Only one library book left after that, and a few other unread ones at home. Making myself read what I have rather than what I feel like is the challenge!

DH has a kindle sub, and while I have been a physical reader til now, that may change.

I've been rereading my way through the Vorkosigan stories by Lois McMaster Bujold. Sci-fi but witty and with much psychological insight. I started in January when I was laid up with influenza. After I'd progressed through all the paper ones I could find in my collection, I downloaded the remaining audio books from the library and am working through them on my commute. They are engaging but not demanding, so appeal to my brain which is somewhat overfried with trying to stay on top of the latest news.
I strongly recommend them to anyone.

Seconding Dune series!
I keep looking through the online library apps, and not sure what I want. Definitely nothing heavy!
Right now I've started "A Spark of White Fire" which is a sci fi retelling of the Mahabrahata.
Often I gravitate to YA for fiction, because I don't want stories with graphic sex and violence. Plus magic and monsters are always fun!
I'll read cozy cat/dog mysteries too. My favorites are the Midnight Louie series

I loved Killers of the Flower Moon - such an intriguing (and distressing) story, and engagingly written.

My ebook loan is about up on The Five, the history book about the five women victims of Jack the Ripper. I haven't finished it and I don't know if I will this time, it's just a bit too dark for me at the moment. But it is well written and intriguing and I'd recommend if it sounds like your kind of thing.

My hold on The Red Lotus by Chris Bohjalian just showed up on Libby - anyone read it?

And just downloaded the audio book of Killers of the Flower Moon based on recs here. But don't tell my husband...we have an ongoing battle about audio books. He listens to them - at volume- constantly, and I tell him they all sound the same to me, and make him put on headphones! But, I've been walking so many miles lately to kill time and stress, and it will be good to listen to something. Thanks for the recommendations!

I have Nothing to See Here on my wish list.

Right now I’m speeding through The Testaments (Margaret Atwood’s sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale). It’s questionable wisdom to escape one dystopian reality for a fictional one by reading this right now, but it is an escape of sorts. I think I need to read something lighter and funny next.

I listened to The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks on audiobook not too long ago and found it lacking a bit of substance myself. I think this was partially due to the fact it was originally written quite a few years ago now when the general public had no idea about what had been done to certain people in the name of science. But I have studied in the sciences so I'm sure I was looking for more depth than maybe the average person. Sam Kean has a good book about genes and DNA that came out a couple years ago - The Violinist's Thumb.

Two books I finished recently that I'd recommend:
One, The Designer by Marius Gabriel, is a novel based on the real-life experiences of Parisians at the end of WWI, including Christian Dior, and the founding of his fashion house and the creation of The New Look. The other is Nothing to See Here, by Kevin Wilson. A woman down on her luck gets asked by an old classmate to come help out with her new stepchildren, who just so happen to burst into flames whenever they feel high emotion.

I am really missing being able to go to the library and do interlibrary loan. My new library system has a pretty sad collection of e-books available, with much less variety than where I used to live. Not that I'm running out of books to read anytime soon, just not maybe the exact ones I want.

Loving these suggestions!

I participate in a book club. Since September, we have read:
Othello - Shakespeare
Lord Jim - Joseph Conrad (Not a fan of this one. Just could not appreciate Jim.)
Dune - Frank Herbert (Lots of interesting characters!)

We just started Death Comes For The Archbishop by Willa Cather. There's a quiet beauty to her writing and gentle humor that appeals to me.

Echo, horses for courses, as Angie would say. One of my best friends is a bioengineer and project manager for a big pharma company and loved the Henrietta Lacks book -- he was the one who got me reading it. It was also meaningful to me because some of it took place literally across the road from my home (in a now-abandoned hospital), and in my hometown. The author even mentions looking out of her hotel room at the building across the street...that is home to my studio. But I really appreciated the emotional journey as much as anything.

Echo, interesting. Are you a scientist? I am not, so it was exactly at the right level for me (and my then- 16 year old!). I just think it's very fascinating how those cells are still being used today for research all over the world. And, i found the human interest part of the story touching, obviously. Also, I read almost entirely fiction, so my non-fiction needs to be extremely readable!
I haven't read any Dawkins. Out of that list, is there a favorite?

I just wanted to comment again. HP Lovecraft is far better than I had imagined. Some of his stories are far out until you read further and realize they are a continuation of another idea developed in another story. He is VERY into imaginative worlds. The idea that Lovecraft is horror... I don't buy it. Much of it may be unexpected, but I've seen little evidence or horror yet (then again, I haven't yet read the Cthulhu tales yet). And much of the language is archaic - by design, as Lovecraft knew he was using archaic conjugations or words when he wrote them.

Most of all, I have come to the conclusion that Lovecraft died far too young. I can only imagine what he might've produced had he lived past the age of 46 (heck, I'm 49, and I still feel as though I've only begun on life).

Regarding Janet's and Laurie's comments regarding The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, I will agree to disagree. I read almost exclusively nonfiction, and while the narrative of the book may have been engaging, there wasn't nearly enough substance to keep me interested. I knew before beginning how the name of HELA cells came about, so the part regarding the woman herself wasn't surprising to me. Nor was it surprising that during the time those cells were acquired, adequate patient consent was not used. Yes, I suppose it should teach a lesson to future generations, but it wasn't worth a short novel to get to that conclusion for me. Just different strokes for different folks, I guess, though I would highly recommend almost any of Richard Dawkin's work - the Ancestor's Tale, The Selfish Gene, The Extended Phenotype, River Out of Eden, Unweaving the Rainbow, etc.

I just noticed Janet mentioned The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. It's such a wonderful book. I have been thinking about this book recently because my son's research job has to do with unique strains of cancer cells on which they test hundreds of drug compounds. These cells are invaluable, and one of the biggest challenges of everyone leaving the lab to work from home has been arranging for maintenance of these strains. The loss of productivity is one thing, but they can't put a price tag on losing the cells. Also, my son was so taken with this book when he was in high school that he contacted the author, Rebecca Skloot, and she actually wrote back to him!

A neighbor lent me Herman Wouk's War and Remembrance a year ago. It's 1,000 pages, and starts just as Pearl Harbor has been attacked. I've been doing most of my reading on my phone via Libby, and that book is certainly too heavy to travel with, so it just sat there for so long. I'm well into it now - about at the battle of Midway - and grateful for its heft.

If you're looking for a long, long read to pass the days, it's a good time to revisit James Michener novels too. I read The Source before, during, and after our trip to Israel. I like fictional history, though I do often want to take a big red pen to Michener! I re-read Hawaii the last time we went to Kauai and Oahu.

I finished Guards! Guards! in audiobook (haven't been driving so I brought it in to listen to on my old laptop which still has a CD/DVD player). At least I don't have to rush to return it to the library.

I started The Poppy War but my ebook loan expired so I need to see if I can get in the queue again. Just finished Thick as Thieves - I enjoyed it more than the previous books in the series. Also some quick read romances from Kindle Unlimited - I got a free two-month trial around the holidays and then forgot to unsubscribe; probably won't now for a while as the lighter stuff is easier to concentrate on at the moment.

I've still got Depth of Winter to get through, then the Longmire after that to request. Also started How to be an Antiracist, which is more of a memoir than I expected.

I just started the The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid. An aging Hollywood starlet recounts her life and seven husbands. There are elements of Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Joan Crawford, Bette Davis and Rita Hayworth in the character of Evelyn. The book reads like a memoir but Evelyn is fictional.

Okay, can I just say I am loving all the love for LM Montgomery? My childhood favourite (and so Canadian). :)

I just finished Prisoners of Geography -- a really interesting analysis of how climate, physical geography, and politics interact.

I'm also re-reading Death in Venice. Cheerful and uplifting? No.

Also doing edits on my own book, so re-reading that. :)

Yesterday I finished The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern. I'd love to hear from anyone else who read it. I have mixed feelings. I loved parts of it, came close to liking it overall, but mainly felt weirdly suffocated. Honey was almost a character and she did an excellent job of making me feel as if I was trying to swim in it and mostly drowning. Since a few of her characters had that experience too, I'm guessing that was intentional, but it wasn't always pleasant.

Becky, KOTFM was so good, and heartbreaking. Up there with the book about Henrietta Lacks.

I read a lot of novels during stressful times. A good Stephen King will take my mind right off problems! Well, maybe not “The Stand” right now, LOL.

I’m almost finished “The Infinite Blacktop” by Sara Gran - a noirish modern female detective story. Just finished “Underground Airlines” by Ben Winters, a mystery-ish novel set in modern day but if the south had won the Civil War. I think I’ll tackle Margaret Atwood’s “The Testaments” next. I also have Haruki Murakami’s “Killing Commandatore” on my nightstand, but I may need something fluffier after Atwood.

When I am stressed by life events or world events, which are currently intersecting, I return to reading old faves from my own collection which are often light reading. I re-read many LMMontgomery books recently, Anne of Green Gables and other Anne, Pat, Emily books. Yesterday I reread “I’ll Take Manhattan” by Judith Krantz. It’s very light but I enjoyed it just like I did in the 80s. I had thrifted myself a copy a year or so back for 50c or so, since I no longer owned my original paperback.

I'm totally in escapist fiction mode. Nothing serious right now - I need things that can grab my attention and take me far away from reality.

Currently reading Amanda Bouchet's Kingmaker Chronicles series (fantasy, with Greek Gods involved)
I'm also listening to Elizabeth Hunter's _The Scribe_ which is the start of her Irin Chronicles series.
I recently finished the latest in Nalini Singh's Rock Hard series - pure romance, with rugby players, and rock stars.... and heat!

Up next is either Where the Light Enters, by Sara Donati (I LOVED her Wilderness series) or one of Ilona Andrews' series - I haven't read the Innkeepers or Kate Daniels. Anything to keep my brain occupied!

Since I read almost exclusively nonfiction and haven't been that enamored with my choices lately, I've decided to branch out a bit. I've ordered the collections of HP Lovecraft, annotated by Leslie Klinger. Honestly, I should have read all of Lovecraft years ago, but never got around to it, so I'm looking forward to these.

I'm reading Killers of the Flower Moon. It's been on my TBR list for quite a while, and I'm just now getting around to it. It's nonfiction but reads like a thriller. Such a sad piece of history of which I, even though I'm an Oklahoma native, had been completely unaware.
