There was an interesting, not-favorable review/commentary in either NYT or WaPo last week about the aspect of the characters seeming to be continuously shocked that they are middle-aged, and how they are constantly making negative age-related comments.&nbsp; Ugh. Lots of commentary/debate elsewhere on the internet. I would just say it’s imperfect but I am enjoying it for what is. From a fashion perspective, I always had mixed feelings about the original, and yet cannot deny I was influenced by Carrie’s hair and makeup if not her wardrobe (very different body type and footwear needs here!). In the reboot, they have decidedly not embraced the sneaker trend or given up their heels, there was even a little joke about them hobbling over uneven pavement. There’s also a ton of belting of dresses going on - so many belts! I overall feel like they are living in a fashion fantasy world (which is fair enough, it’s also a very wealthy and post-Covid world). I can’t relate what I’m seeing to what I understand of trends, but realize that’s probably due to my own ignorance/lack of exposure these days. I felt differently though! I thought John seemed checked out (and likely stoned) for the first sessions. It wasn’t until they move back to the Saville studio and Billy Preston comes in before they start really working more as a team. But I saw Paul as the one with the most ambition and drive, trying to cultivate material for a new record under an insane deadline! I found new respect for Paul (George has always been my favorite Beatle up to now, but I think I now feel like each one had such distinct contributions I see them more equally). </p> <p>How odd to see Yoko sitting right in the middle of the band as they work, but I like that it didn’t bother the rest of the guys. She and John just had that kind of relationship. I have dispensation sleep during his games and vice versa.</p> <p>I can’t stand the storylines in Hallmark, etc.: big city girl comes to recognize the error of her ways in going away to get an education or working in a professional position, and returns to her home town to be a mom. It’s like watching my life if I had never escaped the toxic stew in my rural home town of blue collar defeatism, conservative religion and sexism. The Handmaid’s Tale reads like an instruction manual for the future for these people; I can’t bear to watch it.</p> <p>We also watch smart mysteries, like Mare, and anything BBC you all recommend, except for those set in Scotland- I can understand a wide range of accents but the burr completely throws me off. I will take the tip from you all of turning on closed captioning! This year we also watched two French shows we really enjoyed: The Bureau and The Spiral. </p>
