Oh, speaking of references to one's home town, my husband and I devoured Bad City by Paul Pringle. It's about various scandals involving very high-placed faculty at the University of Southern California, and a lot of the action takes place in my home town, and one of the most notorious incidents takes place in a local hotel suite in which we actually stayed! Very riveting, if infuriating.

Ms Mary, I have the new Stephen King on my list! Hubs is listening to it now. Can’t wait! Fun that he name-checks our friends’ band in a recent book (not sure if it’s this one) — a character is wearing one of their tee shirts. :-D

Current read: A Song for a New Day by Sarah Pinsker. I was reading along and was pleasantly surprised to see references to my hometown, including a band I used to go see decades ago…and then found out she lives in the area and we have mutual friends! I’m not too far in but am really enjoying it so far.

Does PD count? I am currently reading Fostering Resilient Learners. I have a hard time with a lot of psychology (it's a personal problem, not an issue necessarily with psychology), but the idea that 1/4 of students could be dealing with trauma is illuminating. And, indeed, when translated to the wider population, that means that 1/4 or so of adults are also dealing with trauma, so when two trauma impacted individuals are encountering one another, the results can be less than stellar if the adult cannot keep their own emotions in check.

Mr. Mary also read Lessons in Chemistry and loved it, and we recommended it to the people we were on vacation with and a couple of them downloaded it on their Kindles and were loving it!

I just finished the new Stephen King book, Fairy Tale. I gave up on him years ago because I found his books too scary/sad/painful, but I really enjoyed this one and highly recommend it.

Also am into a fun new sci fi series that starts with The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers. Very entertaining vacation reading.

Oh, and Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn, about a group of female professional assassins whose retirement doesn't go exactly as planned. Very fun and unusual.

I am listening to the audio version of The Love Songs of W.E.B. DuBois. I borrowed the audio by accident, and I usually dislike audio books, but this one is read by 4 actors and it is beautiful. It's very long, I'm afraid I will have to return it long before I'm done!

Klara and the Sun by Ishiguro was the best book I read this year! High five Bijou!

I read a few drama/crime thrillers:

How Lucky, Will Leitch: The main character is totally endearing and the story is captivating. Recommended!
Razorblade Tears, S.A.Cosby: Sad but also good and ultimately satisfying. Recommended!
The Nowhere Child, Christian White: Apparently this book is not new but this Australian author is new-to-me. I really liked the pace and the atmosphere, I am thinking of reading a few more of his books.

Another new-to-me, international author is Sally Rooney, who hails from Ireland. I read Normal People and Beautiful World, Where are you? Moody books, driven by character development rather than events. I liked them both.

I also read Midnight Library by Matt Haig. I found the message a bit too obvious.

I am currently reading The Trees, by Percival Everett and it's gruesome but a page-turner!

One Drop: Shifting the Lens on Race by Dr. Yaba Blay. Nuanced exploration of racial identity with personal narratives accompanied by gorgeous photographic portraits. Most are mixed folks; lot of food for thought. Fairly quick read on glossy paper.

rachylou - Are your romantic mysteries by Jeannie Lin? If so, I quite enjoy her writing.

I just read Hell Followed With Us by Andrew Joseph White which is YA and Horror, two genres I generally don't enjoy but this book is excellent. Plus, it has a great cover and I'm easily seduced by covers (sometimes to my detriment - pretty covers frequently hide bad books). The main character is a trans boy and the author is also trans.

Loving the suggestions and the variation I see here! It's encouraging for a writer to see that (yes!) some people still DO read!

Ms. Mary -- Mr. Suz adored Lessons in Chemistry. I've put it on hold too because he liked it so much and found it so funny.

I will have to try The School for Good Mothers again...I started (the audio version) and it was upsetting me so much yet not gripping me in terms of its style -- but maybe it was just the narrator's voice. I'll try the book version.

I just read Florida, by Lauren Groff -- she is so good. Spooky and disturbing psychogeography -- it stays with you like Florida humidity.

Right now I'm reading When We Lost Our Heads by Heather O'Neill. It is one weird book. It's a kind of me-too allegory but set in 19th C Montreal and while the idea is interesting, the style is cartoonish (on purpose? I don't know) and over the top, not to mention anachronistic -- but since it's an allegory maybe that's okay. I am surprised I have persisted with it but every now and again a new character appears who keeps in interested.

I'm also reading some poetry.

My next up is Emi Yagi's Diary of a Void.

I adored Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day but found Klara and the Sun and most of all Never Let Me Go too upsetting and abandoned both.

Right now I'm re-reading Katherine Heiny's Standard Deviation. If you enjoy a mash-up of hilarious and extremely poignant, run, don't walk...

I love reading about what others are reading

MsMary, Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus is on my must read list, especially as my mother has a STEM degree from an engineering school. And she was basically told that she would not be able to continue working after she got pregnant with me. Had to train her replacement, a man that they told her they would be paying more than she was making.

anyway, I’ve read 2 books that on the surface seem very similar , but were sooo different. I liked them both. Well honestly, i loved “The Final Revival of Opal & Nev” by Dawnie Walton. I’m not sure where i read about this book, maybe here. Anyway, its about rock and roll, race, fame and fortune, and the intersection of all of that and what we will and won’t do and what we owe ourselves and others. This is one that i will definitely re read at some point. The other book which also is about rock and roll in the 70s, was “Daisy Jones & the Six” by Taylor Jenkins Reid. I liked this book, probably would have liked it more if I hadn’t read it back to back with “Opal & Nev”, its lighter and more of a sex, drugs and rock and roll book.

Also read “The Personal Librarian” by Marie Benedict & Victoria Christopher Murray. Based on the true story of the women who put together the Pierpoint Morgan Library and how she, and her remarkable family moved from civil rights leaders to passing as whites. I suspect that her real store is much more interesting then this book was. But i do recommend the book

On audio I’m reading/listening to the Slough House series, bu Mick Herron. This was made into a series for Apple TV (which is how i heard of it) but I haven’t watched any of it. So far I’ve finished book 1 “Slow Horses” and book 2 “Dead Lions”. It’s about the cast offs from MI 5. Entertaining and fun, perfect for car rides, walks and chores

I've been reading a lot lately. I also read Truth and Beauty by Ann Patchett about her friendship with another author, Lucy Grealy. Then read Grealy's Autobiography of a Face.

Also read Blackout: Remembering What I Drank to Forget by Sarah Hepola...very good memoir on this subject. Right up there with Drinking a Love Story by Carolyn Knapp (and if you read Carolyn Knapp, do read Gail Caldwell's book Let's Take the Long Way Home about her friendship with Carolyn...and dogs).

I've just started The Midnight Disease about a neurologist's struggle with hypergraphia during post partum depression. It's a little technical, wish me luck :).

I'm reading Full Spectrum: How the Science of Color Made Us Modern by Adam Rogers. He's a great and entertaining writer, and it is a great read so far.

So many good suggestions here. I've been on a memoir kick this last month with three Abigail Thomas books: Three Dog Life, What Comes Next and How to Like It, and Safekeeping. Her writing, and her life, I found fascinating, including her husband's traumatic brain injury and a very unusual friendship.

RoseandJoan, I loved On Earth We Are Briefly Gorgeous!

I've just started Dopamine Nation, which is basically a pyschiatrist explaining about how we live in a dopamine-based economy and thus are all at peril for addictive tendencies (and what we can do to mitigate) - and I can tell you it's not uplifting but it is quite fascinating!

ETA - meh. The conclusion seemed to be we should all follow the 12 steps? She also made a few comments throughout that didn't sit well with me at all; e.g. about how religious dress codes for women represent a sort of barrier against men's bad habits?!? Maybe I didn't understand it - but I didn't really take anything useful from this in the end; I think my initial interest was more anticipating insights rather than actually finding any ...
