Sal these are really good ideas - I especially like the idea of a wide leg jogger and a long cardigan in a scuba type fabric …..which I just happen to have , lol. I look like a fool in a baseball cap but I’ll do the modern sunglasses and simple tee . Actually I can’t wait to try this !!

I was thinking about this and how I would style to add a 2026 flavour.

My most trending sneakers, straight jeans or joggers (I think wide leg and barrel don’t work as well with long cardigans) and maybe a baseball cap and your most modem sunglasses. Simple tee underneath. I would totally wear that and feel good. Modern classic.

I also think a wide leg jogger would work or yoga pant style - less bulky than denim.

I used to adore long cardigans of all styles (buttoned, open, waterfall, shawl collar, etc) and wore them paired with skinnies and bootcut jeans for years. Then I got tired of them, plus layering them under coats in colder weather was always an issue.

Currently I do not own any and I'm not missing them. But I may change my mind in the future, as trends come back around. However, if I added them again, I'd anticipate wearing them differently. Maybe pairing with a dress or skirt versus skinny jeans again so the look is fresh to my eye.

Good luck with your editing!

I have this one from Target, in a gorgeous clove/chocolate brown. It's a lightweight knit with some drape and softness. It's been my favorite topper for the last 3-4 years, until this winter. It's really pilled now and looked a bit ratty for public viewing. But prior to that, I wore it with/over everything: summer sun dresses, boho blouses+jeans, sweats and pajamas -- you name it. This winter I finally got very burned out wearing long cardi+chiffon boho blouse when leaving the house. (Didn't realize what I rut I was in.) But if and when the long cardigan comes back, I think (hope) I'll enjoy wearing it again. Only trying to decide if I'll knit a new one or buy a new one.

My other two midi/maxi cardigans are bulky knits. They are best for winter. We had such a mild winter I barely got to wear them, so still not sure if I love them or not. Need another season or two with them.

I have eight long cardigans in my present wardrobe, and I love them all and wear them anywhere and with anything--dresses, skirts, dressy pants, jeans, lounge pants, blouses, shirts, pullovers, tees, slingbacks, ballet flats, loafers, booties, boots, sandals ....

I am a bit taller than average and in fact often receive compliments when I wear long cardigans and other "long length items." Perhaps it feels less natural/easy for petites to wear them. Or it might just be a matter of personal preferences.

I am very late here, but I have only one now. probably my oldest sweater. I didn't wear it more than a few times this year but until this year it had been an absolute workhorse. WHen I wore slim pants I loved having a long cardigan. I also like to style them wiht wide crops. But I'm temporarily off the look. Will definitely go back to it if the style returns, though -- I like to wear them as Irina suggested -- for neighbourhood walks, and slightly more casual outings where I still want a third piece.

I no longer have a long cardigan - my feelings are similar to yours Lisa. I did buy the cardigan below in an effort to wear a more "trending" cardigan and it has been worn very lightly. Potentially a mistake.

In general I prefer a long cardigan to a short one....but right now I am really not wearing either.

I agree - keep the best ones - get rid of the rest!

I still have two - one Desigual that I wear a few times a year, and one lightweight brown one, that I keep because a brown topper might come in handy. Some day. :-)

I like the Desigual sweater with plain, narrow jeans, because it is kind of wild and subtly sequined. Also, and this is KEY, it doesn't drag over my behind.

I have several knee length cardigans that I haven't worn in a few years but would wear again with slimmer pants. Glad I have hung on to them.

I also have some mid-thigh that don't feel very current but I keep wearing for warmth to work. Every time I wish I could shorten them somehow.

Thanks for all of your thoughts . I find them a little fussy for at-home wear : I don't want extra fabric clinging around the legs of whatever pants I'm wearing . Waterfall cardigans are an absolute NO , and I have no problem stating that . But again, I will keep 3 basic long open front cardis for future consideration .

I'm off for a few days starting tomorrow and will be tidying up my closets in prep for spring, and look forward to creating space and clarity by passing on 3-4 of these pieces.

For me personally I only like floaty light weight ones that swoosh around the knee area for a bit of drama. I have a brick red one and a light grey cheetah print one. They don't have buttons. They only get worn once ot twice a year in late Spring which is very short here. I like them and wear them with any pants, wide or narrow, and a tee. Heavier knit ones look too dowdy on me and I steer clear.

I still have a couple in my closet and I do wear them from time to time. They aren't the easiest to style, tricky to get the proportions right and there can be outerwear length issues too with a couple of them.

As a member of the wide hip club, I never liked long cardigans — they just seem to make me feel wide and matronly. But I don’t really care much for cardigans for myself anyway — if I want a topper I generally want to add more edge and/or structure. I do have a couple of pieces that sort of ride the line between cardigan and jacket (a collarless unlined knit jacket, and a zip/front mixed media leather-jersey jacket). But they are both hip length.

I see other people look cute in long cardigans but those tend to be the oversized fashion-forward versions these days. No waterfall.

I don't have one right now. Interesting to hear that they will be making a comeback soon.
I have to say, perhaps going back to that recent blog post, while it is nice that the new norm is DYOT, it also makes it super hard to follow trends and keep up. It feels like following all of these trends that come in and out of fashion at super speed is a full-time job in and of itself. I guess with so many influencers around, it makes sense. It is how they make a living.

I love long cardigans! They're comfier than jackets. I am not a good judge of trends and knowing what's in or out. Once I like a piece I usually keep liking it and will wear it until it doesn't fit anymore.

I have a couple and I mostly wear them under a coat when I want more warmth. I have a long velvet coat I wear in winter that is not that warm. I have tried occasionally wearing them belted over long flared pants. Kind of a soft but slightly structured look. I like it, but it’s not that practical for me.

I like them, I recently bought this belted knee length cardigan and look forward to our weather to cooling down. For me, they are easier to style than a regular cardigan given their lengthening effect. I am OK with the 'dressing gown' vibe (similar to my velvet long jacket) of long line cardigans. I like wearing mine with dresses and boots.

I don't think I've ever worn a long cardigan--not sure why--but I have been looking at all of the F/W RTW shows and am super excited about the possibility of dropped waists returning to retail! I've noticed that Tibi and Lemaire have been doing variations for a while, but the Chanel show featured a lot of dropped waists, so I'm guessing they will trickle down. I've also been slightly attracted to longer button up cardigans lately, so maybe they are vaguely connected in my mind too, as Jaime and Angie note.

I love a dropped waist and they have been so hard to come by for ages. I have been trying to capture the vibe by wearing a belt quite low on my hips when I wear a skirt, or sometimes even with pants.

Exciting when a trend shows up that you've been waiting for for ages :).

I used to wear a long waterfall cardigan with a black t-shirt dress underneath, and then belt the whole thing. People loved that outfit. I think the dress hem just barely longer than the sweater worked.

I think I’ve moved mine on. Mostly from the 90’s. Either they started to look dated, or I realized that the thinner ones were emphasizing my too generous rear. Not a flattering sleek look.

But I would bet with a bit of digging there may be one or two in the darker corners of my closets. Probably well moth-eaten by now.

Keeping mine. I don’t wear them often but when I need them, I need them. Glad to hear they are coming back.

I've had one navy long cardigan for awhile and go to it for a little different silhouette than my usual. This winter I bought a rich brown long cardigan. I was mostly drawn to the color as something new for my usual palette. I'm not sure I've found the exact combination for them. Glad to hear they are coming back. I'll have to work harder to find just the right pants to pair them with.

LJP, a daily walk with my DH is not an exercise for me :)
When it warms up outside, I wear sweatpants only to a gym or pool. Can’t imagine walking around in gear!

Good point about the leaner pant silhouette trending again . Might be a good look with a plain white t , jeans and loafers . I feel good about keeping the 3 I’ve set aside .

Trends notwithstanding , a dropped waist is a horrendous look on me and I have no desire to revisit it .

I cannot imagine wearing one for an outdoor walk , lol, a big difference in our exercise wear styles Irina !

Long cardigans have been my uniform, but I have not reached for them as much as you said for the last few years.
I am going to keep them as I reach retirement and will spend more time at home, and they will be practical for my casual lifestyle and climate.
I live in Wisconsin and lean on sweaters/layers over my leggings and slim straights, from late September thru late May.

What Jaime said!

Just finished the Spring and Summer trends post, LJP. These long and lean cardigans form part of the dropped waist '20s Trend, and people will begin wearing them again over Slim Straights.

I have at least one long cardigan somewhere but haven't worn it for ages. Which is often a sign that it will be coming back before you know it. If you saw some of the fashion week shows, dropped waists are apparently coming in, and they are sort of connected in my mind.
