For me, the trick was to find one that was a close fit, short enough to wear with dresses (though I also wear it with pants), a simple style, and the right color. Mine is a medium blue, and it doesn't even have lower front pockets, so it feels streamlined. I love that it is very soft fabric with a little stretch; it is sooo comfortable. I wear it as a cardigan or blazer substitute.
This one is called "the Robyn," by AG.

The lighter weight ones with a lot of stretch seem to be cut better for dresses. Jeans jackets have all types of cuts maybe because of all the seaming? Good luck!

It may take some thought or experimentation. I'm a rectangle but find the longer ones too boxy even with pants. A short fitted jacket that falls at the waist gives me more shape. You may want to decide if you want it to end at or below the waist
I like the ones with stretch for moving comfortably. I have dark denim, faded, very light blue, white and red, plus a thrifted faded one that is a more dusty blue and has a detachable faux fur collar...way over saturated with these but I wear them all. The red gets the least use.

It's all about the fit. Not too big, not too boxy. Not too long or short. It has to be fitted. Color and wash are pretty personal. I have a light wash and a dark. The dark gets more use. I'm not a fan of colored denim jackets, but that could well be personal. Keep looking until you find one that is just right for you.

I have a white one and a mid wash. The white is new this summer from the Jessica Simpson line. The mid wash I will post a picture of tomorrow. Some have mentioned great success with the mid wash at American Eagle, The Gap and Old Navy.

I have two of last year's version of this one, in a medium faded denim (like the one I linked to) and white. They go with everything. Lots of fabbers have these.
http://www.ae.com/web/browse/p.....1_1639_901

Hi Peri, I can't find the post but I remember Angie saying she had her (Diesel I believe) denim jacket altered to fit her. I remember because I'd given up on them because the fit was always off on me :)

Depending on your body type you may need a longer one for pants & a shorter one if you do want to wear it with dresses.

I would say you want a slightly long one for pants wear, more cropped is ideal for dresses but buy for your primary use. Light wash is a fun was to dress down dressier items, a darker wash doesnt feel nearly as casual. Fairly tapered through the body... i think Angie had hers basically rebuilt by her tailor to be perfection in fit. Stylewise if you just getting one, id go classic button down front pockets etc. now for your second and third (not that YLF will get you hooked but....) moto, or something else fun!

ETA: I have 3.... slippery slope!

I like my light denim jacket - I think it's a lot easier to mix and match! I like a closer fit to the body and a long enough sleeve I also like fun little details - mine has studs!

I see so many WIWs that put denim jackets over everything...it's making me want one for fall!

What is the most versatile style in terms of fit and color? I like the posts with dresses but I really don't do dresses often. I'm more likely to want to be putting it with black pants and a thin sweater or T shirt, usually in a bright solid color.
