J. Crew does have a white trouser that I will try. My only issue is that they don't come in a "short" length, while BR's do. The J. Crew inseam is 33", which means I would have to hem off at least 2 inches just so I could wear it with heels. I like the look of the J. Crew denim better, though. I just don't want to mess up the line of the jeans by hacking too much off the bottom.

I will look at them next time I am there. I tried their "hip slung" denim this even and I love it! It's the only bootcut that I feel is fairly flattering on me. The rise is really nice, too--just where I like it. If you are like me and are curvy and have short legs, you might give it a go.

The BR white jeans are really wide, Ana. Try ATL and J Crew instead. Or have you tried them already?

Side entry pockets are a little ridiculous and I cannot believe that retailers continue to offer most pant styles with side entry pockets. Not enough choice. This makes me cross! Nice vinegar tip. I’ve tried it and shall blog about it.

I almost always either sew pockets shut and remove the extra fabric myself or have a tailor do it. Who needs stupid pockets sticking out and adding visual weight? This could be a whole topic in itself!

As for jeans for a pretty pear, I suggest the Sweetheart Bootcut jeans in the darkest blue wash from Old Navy. They are only $29. Since we all know that you get what you pay for, try soaking them in white vinegar and water before you wash them in order to try to set the dye a little more. (You can also use this trick to keep black t-shirts black if you put them in the dryer.)

I tried on their Diva skinny jeans (also $29) and they were actually flattering on my thinner pear shape but I don't have any tunic tops to wear with them so I passed. You should try them on!

I'm keeping my eye out for pocketless pants. That's the only reason the J. Crew shorts worked. They do have very small pockets in the back that show through a bit, but at this point, I decided these are things I can live with. White really is the best color to go with my summer wardrobe. I'm looking into white jeans as well. BR has a pair of white trouser jeans that didn't have a problem with noticeable pocket show-through. They were a heavier denim though (probably not ideal for summer, but you can't win them all, I guess).

Ana, try J Crew. Try their clam diggers too. And I just realized that you have!

The solution is to find white pants without pockets. My white and cream jeans do not give me this problem. My new white skinny Esprit jeans are genius! They have constructed a very shallow pocket that does not show through at all. This is the first time I have ever experienced this. THAT is the solution.

Nicole, I'm having this exact problem with white walking shorts! I went to BR today, totally excited because they FINALLY have their walking shorts in--I tried on a white pair, and they were hideous! I was SO disappointed. The pockets were really big in the front, and in the back, and they were very obvious. The thing was they were already sold out in the petite sizes.....do people not notice these things when they try on white pants/shorts? I would never buy shorts like that.

It's not just BR, but everywhere I've tried, except Anne Klein, but their rise was way too high for me--it covered my belly button--and the length was just a tad too long. I ended up purchasing a pair from J. Crew which didn't have any pockets. They kind of crease in the front around the zipper area, but the fronts of my thighs are pretty muscular and stick out further than my stomach, so I get this problem with pretty much all the trousers I try on. Oh well.

Anyway, that was a long way of saying I totally agree with you, and I have the same issues.

RE: White pants....Is there a solution to the pockets showing thru the fabric? I know this is less of a problem with denim, but even light weight denim can have this problem.

I have to admit, I do seem to have an usual preoccupation wth pockets. I have had back pockets removed and the pocket opening sewn shut because I can't stand to see the pocket fabric bunch up.

The old navy jeans fit me terribly and I've given them a million chances since they're so cheap. The same goes for the gap. For some reason the jeans at these stores worked well when I was a bit bigger. Now that I'm a slimmer pear everything there just looks bad. The cheapest jeans I've had that fit me really well are NOBO or "no boundaries" for $20. You can find them at the Kmart and Walmart but only if they feel like stocking them and your lucky enough to find them in a small enough size without the ridiculous washes, painted on flowers and other silly junk that plagues inexpensive juniors jeans. It's worth looking into this brand anyway if your a super slim pear. The fit is amazing and the quality is surprisingly solid. The simple black pair I own are the cheapest jeans I have, yet they're the second best fitting pair I've ever owned next to a $180 pair of paige.

Old Navy Jeans are well within the 50 and under price range. I find that they fit well, I'm wearing a low-rise dark-wash close-fitting boot leg pair right now. I swore by them until I tried on a pair of Guess jeans ($125 CDN, my most expensive jeans purchase) that fit my waist & hips like a dream and felt like love when I put them on.

Ah, that explains it! I just bought a couple of AT summer tops on consignment and was puzzled to have an XS and a size 0 fit perfectly. I would NOT consider myself a size 0, and I only rarely wear an XS (although a lot more here recently...I guess as sizes migrate up?).

Thanks for the info, Tanya. I didn't see them in the store, but maybe they were in another section. I'll check it out today.

The dress I bought at ATL was a size 4 and I'm a pretty solid 8 everywhere else. The sales person told me that their stuff tends to run a little big, but the petite sizes aren't really correlated at all with the misses' sizes. It probably depends on the item as well.

Ana, I saw online that the AT top comes in white as well. Not really a color, but worth considering if you're thinking of getting another one.
Nicole, I agree on you on sizing. ATL tops run ridiculously big. I am an xs/2 almost everywhere, but have to buy xxs tops at ATL. I do like their tops a lot, but this annoys me since xxs is not available in the store, only online so i can not try it on immediately.

Julia, thanks for the response. I agree about AT being classic and chic, which is why I love them too. I do generally like the colors they choose. I guess right now they are doing a major blue thing, and I feel like EVERYTHING in my closet is some shade of blue. But they do great fall colors also and I always pick a lot of stuff up from them during that time. Their sweaters wear very well. I just bought a top from AT (dark blue--of course), and it's available also in light blue and a blue and white print. I LOVE the top (one of the only sleeveless tops I have) and have gotten several compliments on it, so I'm debating the blue print. If only it came in something besides blue!

I just got my allowance today. I think I'll head out to AT and try the jeans. I might head out to the outlet as well.

Thanks Julia. This makes perfect sense. I am thrilled to hear that you wear white jeans and pants. This is a Summer must and I have a hard time convincing women that it's the best way to go despite their body shape. I cannot imagine a Summer season without white bottoms. That's what washing machines are for.

Ana, most of the jeans I got from AT and ATL are a little below the waist, like half to one inch below. I found that is the best rise for me. I wear their petite size by the way.

I found a pair of darkwashed boot cut jeans from AT's outlet store, it's soft and comfortable, also it has a blackish bluewash which I like over the regular dark bluewash (does that make sense?) I loved it so much I spent 50 minutes driving back to the outlet mall to get a second pair. Alright I went there to see other stuff too but that was the motivation for me to go back. :)

I'm 5 feet tall so most of their pants fit me just right with a 2 inch heel. I have a narrow hip so usually I go with straight hip types but I bought a pair of white jeans in curvy hip from ATL last year and it fits me fine.

I agree that they tend to get into color funks. The good thing is that they choose good in season colors. Once you have built a basic wardrobe, it is a good place to pick up trendy stuff to keep your wardrobe up to date. Another reason I like it is that their styles are classic and chic, not too old and not too trendy, which fits my style very well. Hopefully I don't sound like their sales rep.

I do notice that the Loft sizes run about 1 full size up. Maybe even 1 and a half if that's possible. I would imagine that translates into their length as well.

Eva, my friend who loves the Loft is also a pretty pear. Maybe that is their target audience. The only pants I have from there, are a pair of straight fit cords and they are a big loose in the caboose.

Eva, I there is some mystical gap forming in pant lengths between petites and regular sizes that wasn't there before. Maybe it's the popularity of flats as a fashionable alternatives to heels, I'm not sure. I am 5'3" and petite sizes are too short for me (I have a 29" inseam) unless I wear flats, which I don't like to do with pants because my legs look short. The regular length is too long for me (because I only wear 2" heels--anything higher and I really can't walk after 30 minutes). So I think we're in the in between lengths (maybe you wear higher heels than I do and don't have to get pants hemmed). I buy regular lengths and have them hemmed. BR has started offering a "short" length which is still sometimes a bit too long, but better than nothing (I only have to hem off a half to one inch or so).

I will definitely give the AT jeans a try.

I agree with you Ana, Ann Taylor and Ann Taylor Loft does get in color funks so if you like the color, you are in a great place. Nicole, I would tend to agree with you that most of ATL's items are not for busty women. I am like your friend with lots of ATL items, particularly pants. I think ATL's pants fit my pear shape better than any other brand, including AT. All my dress pants come from there.

ATL does seem to be playing with their sizing again. I feel like their petites are very short. I have had to move to misses size pants for the length which I have never had to do (I am 5' 2.5"). Has anyone else notice that? On a good note, they are making more pants in Julie Curvy. So now they will have slacks in both Marissa (for the less hippy women) and Julie Curvey, for me.

I really like Ann Taylor clothing, it's one of the only places I've found skirts that I really really like (but I'm picky about skirts that aren't denim). I LOVE the shirt dress I got from the Loft as well, although, I was less impressed with their selection than with Ann Taylor's. My only issue with the two stores is that they get into these color funks, and they'll only offer the entire line of items in the colors they've chosen. I know this is what most stores and designers do as well, but I haven't been really thrilled with most of the colors they've chosen recently. And they only choose like 2 colors, and one of them is invariably black or white. So if I really want a hot pink, black or white cardigan, I'll go to the Loft. Or if I want olive green, black or possibly aqua blue, I'll choose AT, etc. Does that make sense? It seems like even their basic camis will only come in those colors as well. It's a bit disappointing if I'm not looking for a blue cardigan at the moment.

I have not had this issue with the AT Outlets, though, which is why I like shopping the one we have here in town. It's probably because they are selling last years clothing, or (like J. Crew outlets) are selling the same designs, but they are made by different production houses from what they sell in their mainstream stores, so the colors are different.

I have mixed feelings about the Loft. I had never shopped there until my friend, a true Loft Afficionado, started dragging me with her. I'd say 70% of her clothes are from the Loft. I have three or four great items that I love, but for the most part, I find their tops are geared for women with small to medium breasts. I have this problem with a lot of stores that only carry their own brand, but I find it to be more so with ATL. In all fairness, I have never shopped at Ann Taylor though.

AT jeans sound good, I think I will give them a try. Julia, do you know how high the rise is on their jeans? Their website doesn't list this information.

Style is always in the wearer Julia!

AT and the Loft are excellent places to shop for particular items and I always recommend them. But, I do not post pictures from their sites because they aren’t so fab. You can’t see enough of the detail on the clothing. They need a new photographer.

I'm glad that Angie recommends AT and the LOFT. I wear their jeans a lot, but it seems that they are not recommended often everywhere else (magazines, websites, etc.) Now I feel better in my choices.

Thats a pity. No Nordies and no Rack in NY? Wow. Come shop in Seattle!

Try the LOFT too. Those jeans were excellent on my client today.

The Rack is one of the few things we don't have here I go to the swanky Short Hills mall in NJ just to go to Nordstrom. It's a bit of a journey but it's an incredible shopping center.

I have only shopped at AT once before but I think I'll give it another go, since everyone here seems to recommend it.

I picked up a $29 pair of Luckys for a client at The Rack. Do you have those in NY?

Also, I was shopping with an ultra stylish pretty pear today and we did so well with AT Loft jeans. She bought a white curvy bootcut for $59. Try AT and the Loft for jeans. They have come out with great shapes. And make sure you try ALL their shapes.

Lucky jeans come in at $100, but you could get them for $50 if you look elsewhere. DKNY Sohos are $49 but they grow so go down a size. Pear –shaped ladies are generally different. Some of my clients look good in Ralph Lauren others in Paige Premium. Try BR too.

I am realizing more and more that you get what you pay for when it comes to jeans. Spend a little more if you are hard to fit and forego something else. There are lots of sub standard quality jeans out there and it shows. Your best bet is to get a great brand on sale or on ebay. Thats how you’ll score with the price.
