Is this the Guess puffer you picked out for your client Angie?

It is COLD in Ottawa and one item on my list is a puffer jacket. I have so far relied on a trimly cut black and white Columbia jacket and a long wool hooded coat for those super-cold days, but I think a puffer would feel delightful. Also, I don't mind the look if it is not too voluminous.

I’m sticking up for the puffer jacket. The right one looks great. I have a knee-length cream puffer that’s trimmed with grey faux fur and it’s like being wrapped up in bed while you’re outside. Divine. I also have a black cropped style that’s similar to the style Maya posted. Equally fab.

I feel cold VERY quickly. I’m always cold. There is nothing that keeps you warmer than a tasteful puffer jacket in the dead of Winter. But they’re not easy to find. They can’t be too long, or too puffy and they HAVE to be tailored. The ones that look like sleeping bags are awful. You have to think along the lines of “après ski”. This look can work really well. I kitted out two clients in fab puffers last week. One from Guess and one from The Rack. They look great.

I am extremely sensitive to cold, I commute, and spend a lot of time walking around outside...but I would still never wear a puffer. I have seen them look cute on occasion, but they need to be fitted and cropped. The long ones just look weird and overwhelming. Gap had a cute one a couple of years ago that I contemplated getting, but decided on another coat instead.

Something like this could work:

http://cgi.ebay.com/NWT-Gap-Wa......m20.l1116

It's not as marshmallowy as a normal puffer jacket. They have a few available at the Gap now that are similar and there is a sale.

Yes Nicole I did mean crash. Sorry to use too much slang!! Heh it's really a gross feeling when you're riding along nice and dry despite the rain. All of a sudden it starts seeping through the neck, legs and underneath the bum. Not a good look once you're off the bike either!

Anyway apologies if that's TMI!!!

yes, where I live we get big cold winter wind and snow. Below freezing much of the winter.

I do not like being cold. I would rather be warm than stylish; but maybe I can have the best of both worlds!

I don't care for the look of puffers either (and I am afraid to photograph myself in one!), but living in Chicago, I do own one and wear it a lot. It blocks wind and keeps you well insulated, plus mine has a (fake) fur-trimmed hood, which is great here because it keeps wind off your neck. I don't mean to sound like Nanook of the North here (this is Chicago, not Alaska!), but the coat is really handy.

Still, they certainly are NOT photogenic or flattering in any way! Maybe we YLFers need to make it a project to search for more stylish, yet still practical, alternatives.

Yublocka, when you say "stack it" do you mean crash??

I agree with San. I don't care for puffer jackets. But living in a very cold climate, I understand why people do wear them. They are very warm and the nylon fabric will keep you relatively dry during a snow shower. They will eventually saturate and soak thru, but they're good for light precip.

So, the way I see it, not only do you need to live in a cold climate, but you need to have the lifestyle that requires that kind of warmth on a regular basis. Like walking the dogs (which I believe is when Angie wears hers), or walking to work or the bus/train stop. A puffer jacket does not fit my lifestyle and would serve no purpose. Driving around in a long puffer jacket sounds cumbersome and hiking in one sounds dangerous. But if you have a need for a long warm jacket on a regular basis--then it makes sense.

Yes they do swoosh, but then so do cords and I love them!

I have a puffy jacket that I wear on my scooter. It's windproof, waterproof (until it starts bucketing down) and very easy to keep clean! I do worry about how protective it would be if I happen to stack it, but I try not to think too much about that!!

I agree they might not be the most sophisticated jackets out there, but I do think they have their place, especially in inclement conditions!

I honestly don't understand why people wear puffer coats. They make swoooshy noise when you move and trying to find one that doesn't look bad seems to be a big chore. So why do people want them? Are they super warm?

I don't really know anything about this coat, but I hated for no one to reply! If you like it, maybe you should order it and give it a try. It might be perfect!
