The first half of our summer is usually cool and foggy and this year has run true to expectations. Like Angie, I have three outfit formulas. #1 is summer dress worn over tee and leggings, #2 is boho top worn over jeans and a black denim jacket for outdoor wear, #3 is a sweater and jeans or overalls worn with a denim jacket.

I really like your summer wardrobe, using only a few colors makes things so easy to mix and match.

I’m happy enough with my formula of easy-laundering dress or skirt plus T-shirt, but nothing is actually COMFORTABLE in some of the weather we’ve had.

It has been stupidly hot and humid since I returned home from France a week and a half ago. We should be getting a break after storms roll through today.

I’ve not been wearing my shorts much, so I’m glad I haven’t invested in any more of them. I’ve been living in long, breezy pants and skirts. Skirts have also been winning out over dresses for the most part.

I’m a new adopter of linen. Roomy, boxy, but cropped tops are also my latest favorite way to cope with the heat.

I’m also liking my two new pairs of slides.

Below are some of my MVPs this summer so far.

Love your pieces Carla! We too have had multiple periods that carry heat warnings. Cotton and sleeveless are my most worn items. White cotton Tommy Hilfiger shorts that are 17 years old and that have been taken in still get the most wears in summer. I keep thinking of retiring them but they are still in good condition and are such a good weight. They manage to maintain a crispness about them even after multiple wears. However on the hottest days even they were too much. Dresses to the rescue, sleeveless cotton ones that are also in that age range, which also just miss the edit year after year but they are the only items that work in high humidty. I keep them for the day, mostly at home as they are not that flattering. For night my dark floral slip dress that is 28 years old is a favourite. My oldies are always my best to fall back on in this type of weather. Tried and well-tested :). I obviously have many newer items but they just don't cut it for me like these do for various reasons.

Basically anything that is breathable, and hangs away from the body.
Exactly! I have recently tweaked my Summer wardrobe. I reduced dramatically the number of Summer pants: two/three pairs for the occasional rainy, cool day. I'm trying to build a good collection of viscose fluid dresses, possibly long - the best thing in torrid, humid weather. This year at the seaside I tried for the first time shorts. But they must be extra light-weight and extra short - the so called "hot pants". Sandals - the daintiest ones. If I could, I would go out and about barefoot. I have always had a good tolerance for the heat but recently I seem to have developed a high intolerance for the sultriness.

You look very stylish in your Summer outfit! But I could not bear a belt in the heat. :)

Classic summer look, Carla!
I've got shorts as well - clearance denim AG straight mid thigh length. All cotton shirt - white with blue stripe ( and a tiny red hearts embroidered ) and linen jacket in pale blue/lavender hue - in constant rotation. Summer was pretty good in San Jose so far .

What Jenni said!

With colour it can come down to what is available. If I can't locate the brighter colours I like I stick to neutrals.

I tend not to get sick of summer dressing - but I do so for winter often. This year I am losing a month from winter so it has not happened - and with adding more trousers instead of denim it has made things a bit more interesting for me.

You look amazing in this outfit Carla! Great legs. And I really really love your curls.
I wouldn’t be concerned that you are more subdued in colour this year, we can’t always determine why our mood leads us to different colours sometimes. I do it too, in my case more in winter like now, I wear quite a lot of black and grey but then suddenly have a day where I feel like throwing in some red. I reckon it’s all good. You’ll likely go back to brights at some point.

*high five for linen*

Those shorts are lovely on you and they look easy to dress up or down. I added linen pants this season and I’m really enjoying them as a break from shorts. We have hot and long summers and while I enjoy and still wear my go to formula of graphic tee and shorts, it’s a nice change to mix in linen for more skin coverage without adding warmth.

My one casual dress has been another nice addition for summer. I’d consider more dresses for next summer to add more variety.

This summer I’m off colorful fashion sneakers and my sandals are in daily rotation instead. I find this interesting and wonder if the daily triple digit temperatures have pushed me to more sandals this season, it has been hotter than normal lately. Or maybe I’m just enjoying the longer leg line from the exposed skin on the foot with a sandal versus a sneaker. *insert shrug*

I’m wearing lots of white or colorful combinations. I adore white in the summer and especially columns of white. My white bottoms are in heavy rotation.

It’s so interesting that you’re favoring a subdued color palette, I’m the opposite! Besides lots of white, I’m also enjoying outfits with no basic colors (ie no black, white, navy, etc). As I’ve been shifting the core of my wardrobe away from black I’ve been trying more colorful combinations. This has been easiest to do with a summer wardrobe because I find summer clothes often have lots of fun colors, especially shorts and graphic tees. Adding peach and coral shorts to my wardrobe really livened up my blues this summer too.

It has been hot and muggy in Wisconsin. I work with toddlers so need to be professional, practical and cool.
Something that looks acceptable at a parent meeting and durable to play in a sandbox with my littles. I depend on cotton and linens that wash well and are stain resistant.

Interesting that you're favouring a somewhat more subdued colour palette this season. Its certainly a lovely and classic colour combination to enjoy.

Its been horribly hot and humid here too. I've been wearing cotton tees and my various shorts so much more this summer compared to previous years. I'm especially loving the 2 new pairs of jorts I bought recently. My linen stuff is also in full swing too.

You truly are Queen Classic of YLF! You make it look so easy. Those shorts look fabulous on you. I say that with some envy since they are precisely the style I've always liked but have never found a way to wear that flatters me! I have a similar problem with classic straight leg chinos, too. It's something in the cut but not sure what. Finding the A-line jorts was a revelation because now I feel I can wear the longer length. I can wear slim Bermudas, too, just like slim pants -- it's that in between straight cut that does not work. Similar to the way a tube skirt works better on me than a pencil skirt, too.... (I am really in the weeds here, sorry!)

Your formula seems to be working well for you and if it is not broke, don't fix it! It could be a mood thing with the colour -- you wore the Hawaiian shirt a lot last year and may simply be in the mood for a quieter palette again. Nothing wrong with that. It will come back into favour.

I would not say I am struggling, exactly, but I don't have a formula, either, and I think it is time for a more substantial summer refresh next year, perhaps.

There are several HEWIs that I haven't worked hard enough to source (linen pants, a linen skirt, more sleeveless tops, a casual but still presentable lightweight daypack that does not look too gear-ish but still functions as gear.) And a cropped denim jacket that has a fitted, not boxy shape. I have wanted/ needed these items (or substitute) for several years and have not found the right ones. I make do with my old stained Rebecca Minkoff nylon bag and my old shorts. :)

MVPs this year include my jorts and the rest of these older items.

It's been pretty hot here this year, and smoky, sadly. When not at work I'm in either athletic wear (for cycling or working out at home) or in shorts and a t-shirt or woven linen top (POMP - going on year 3 and I have two of them. Best purchase ever.) I have worn white bottoms a grand total of 2 x which is the opposite of last year and my 2 pair of Arizona Birks are not getting worn much either - also opposite of last year. My new lightweight denim barrel jeans are getting worn a fair bit too. It doesn't feel like the middle of summer to me, although I know it is. I'm over it and ready to move on to fall.

We have very hot summers. Since we got back from our trip, nearly every day I’ve worn Macy’s INC International Concepts shorts in both short and longer lengths in olive, tan, and navy, Eddie Bauer sleeveless boat neck tops in white, charcoal and navy, and Crocs recovery slides in charcoal and navy - a very neutral uniform.

I recently ordered the shorts in an interesting shade of green (Harvest Pear), but returned them when I realized they had eliminated the pockets. In the online comments, no one said, oh I’m so glad you eliminated the pockets.

We're having a great Summer in Seattle. A few heatwaves - although manageable, now we have a/c - THANKFULLY. Our loft was dire without it for 6 months of the year.

It took me a while to settle on my fab-for-me Summer looks. Over the years, I embellished my High Summer capsule by zoning in on what I love to wear, and it's worked out brilliantly. I wear one of three outfit formulas:

White Bottoms + Anything That Tickles My Fancy :)

Shirtdresses (structured and unstructured)

Co-ord (patterned and solid pants sets)

Fabrics are VERY cotton-rich. Some silk too. Bits of linen.

Shoes are refined loafers and ballet flats. Sometimes low profile sneakers. Or ankle strap flats. And the new mules! I don't wear sandals living in the city. I need foot coverage. I wear my ONE pair of sandals in Greece and Italy only, I guess!

Added some fab new pairs of white jeans and pants - in heavy rotation (actually ALL white bottoms are in heavy rotation). Added some polo tops too - LOVE them! Added more shirtdresses. Working out marvelously!

Oh! And my new BF Dre's from Rag 'n Bone are VERY lightweight and blue denim. They work well too.

For casual days when I am dog walking and doing house stuff, I am wearing my denim shorts with a tee or denim shirt. For footwear, I wear Finn Comfort sneakers or Birks.
For special occasions like a music concert, I have worn linen pants and a shirt.
Today I went on a lunch cruise with some friends on Lake Muskoka. I went for an olive green tonal look. I didn't plan on this; it just happened. I wore an olive green linen shirt (POMP) over a white tank, olive green cotton joggers (Sanctuary), and olive green sandals (Birks). For accessories, I wore silver and amber jewellery.

A change this summer has been more pants! Last summer was shorts everyday, but this year I found three pairs of loose linen pants that are just as cool and definitely more versatile. My right heel has been achy, so my Vionic sandals are getting 90% of the wear. And of course bathing suits!

It has been a hot and muggy summer here in Michigan! Even though our house doesn't have central air, we have some window units and it keeps us pretty comfortable. But I have been wearing non-stop some sleeveless cotton shirts and elastic waist cotton/linen shorts. Nothing else is cool enough.

At work and for out and about, is my usual cropped pants with a shirt and cardigan or long sleeved shirt for protection from the AC.

Love your WIW - cool and classic for a summer day.

Someone on the radio referred to it being the middle of the summer. If June 20th was the first day of summer and September 22nd is the first day of fall, then I guess we are indeed in the middle of summer - with 6-7 more weeks to go!

My record keeping reveals that I’ve been in linen shorts, linen pants, light weight linen or cotton tops and loose cotton dresses. We’ve experienced 5 ‘heat events’ where temps reached levels that came with heat warnings. The weather is supposed to return to ‘seasonal norms’ in the 25-28degC range, but with ‘feels like’ 35degC (or 95degF).

I did refresh my summer capsule in June, and those items (2 pairs of linen shorts, a cutwork cotton top, and a cotton dress) are in heavy rotation as are linen and cotton button down tops and anything sleeveless. Basically anything that is breathable, and hangs away from the body. A surprise favourite has been a mesh t-shirt. Although it’s a synthetic, it’s airy and cool, and not so sheer as to be indiscreet. I’m generally off t-shirts in the kind of heat we are having, but I do love my thrifted Marvel t. Also, an older lace Uniqlo tank from 2018 has come out of semi-retirement and is getting a lot of wears this year. Sandals and Converse sneakers - of course.

The finds below are the hard working items that comprise the backbone of my summer capsule. I suspect I’ll keep them in high rotation for another 6 weeks at least. I need to wear my lemon print dress more, and get the red Hawaiin shirt into rotation. I seem to be into a subdued palate this summer. I’m happy with what I’ve got and mostly natural fibres seems to be the way to go!

#1 WIW today - pale blue linen camp shirt, black linen shorts, eel skin belt (thrifted), fisherman sandals (Steve Madden)

What are you wearing this summer? Have you got a formula that is working for you, or are you struggling? Are you set for the season, or contemplating a refresh?
