I think that in the system described by Angie, a "rectangle" who gains weight tends to become an "apple" - you carry weight in your upper body rather than pounds going "straight to your hips" as many ladies describe.

Coming back to say that I think you are what Trinny and Susannah's body shape scheme calls a brick shape. Not a great name but they do have some good styling ideas.
See this, for example http://bodyshapestyle.com/2011.....the-brick/

Remember it's also possible to have a 'secondary' body type too! For example, I'm a pear-shaped hourglass, lol...

I don't think you're a 'mess' so much as we all gain weight in different body areas - I believe David Kibbe has written about this in relation to his different Kibbe Types (i.e. which types tend to gain weight where), so it might be worth looking him up too?

I agree with Lana, sounds like tending towards inverted triangle.

If your shoulders are wider than your hips you may have an inverted triangle or “V” shape. If shoulders, waist and hips are similar you could be a rectangle or “I” shape, but the important thing to ask yourself is what you want to highlight or draw attention away from. There are ways to create the illusion of a waist for example or add focal points to draw attention to your favorite areas.

Hiya, in the meantime there is a treasure trove of resources about body type here: https://youlookfab.com/style-advice/

Please consider that perhaps your body is not a mess when you gain weight, but rather that you just need some time to work out how to dress it where it is now! :). I hope that doesn't sound preachy but we can be so hard on our bodies and sometimes need to remember to be kind to ourselves. Just fwiw

Hi. Trying to figure out my body type but I can’t seem to fit anywhere. I’m flat at bust and butt (did manage to grow my butt a tiny bit since moving to CO but not much), broad shoulders and back, no waist, semi-chunky midsection. When I lose weight I could say I’m a rectangle. But when I gain weight (thanks covid) I’m a mess. The weight all goes to my arms, back (upper, not butt), inner tights, and belly. Am I a chunky rectangle? Any help understanding my body shape (and maybe a link on how to dress it) would be very much appreciated
