WELL DONE! This sounds great :)

Do you Iive in a warm climate? If not, toppers and some type of warmer footwear would be good essentials to add to the mix.

Ah, yeah, I try for variety in color (within a limited dark palette) and silhouette. I don’t admit essentials duplicates unless I know I will be wearing something out that season and that I want at least another year of wearing it.

So that’s very interesting to me. Because I’m seeing now you don’t have any essential skirts on your list. I have ‘essential skirts’ - quite a lot of black skirts when I think about it - but I don’t put them on my list because I almost never wear them. I’m thinking you have quite a variety of essentials in actual use to keep things interesting. I have two pairs of high waisted dark skinnies, high waisted dark skinny jeans being one of my five or so essential items. Zero variety! I keep to the one silhouette, whether essential or not, almost all of the time (tho I have a bit of everything in the old closet there).

Mine are in constant use; each season I have half a dozen non-essential dresses and a similar number of non-essential skirts (or in the last few years culottes) in the mix, but the essentials form the base of my dressing the rest of the time. They don’t get boring given the variety of non-essential toppers and shoes that form the rest of my closet.

Ok. I feel a question coming on. I am, of course, not an essentials dresser. I, of course, do have them. But they are few and I’m coming to realise that I rely heavily on (some of) them, meaning they are workhorses. I’m not sure what my question is yet... but if one is an essentials dresser - at least more than me, so that’s like everyone, haha - well, I’m wondering how many of folks’ essential items are also workhorses. I’m thinking that I’ve been thinking essentials are normally in heavy rotation... but maybe they don’t have to be... which would make sense... which is why they get duplicated... maybe what I’m wondering is how many different styles of essentials one can have without one style becoming more essential than others...

Your neutrals sound absolutely gorgeous. Essential bottoms and layering tops with statement toppers for variety makes perfect sense to me.

I think I am in need of more coffee, I also forgot my slim midi length knit skirts in dark neutrals, I always have those in the mix. I don’t have many tops or jackets on the list of neutrals because that’s where I go in for interesting fabrics or knits, texture, color, print or trim. Or I mix the basic toppers with a skirt with an interesting print.

I have WFH for years, but I always had somewhere to actually GO - kids things, grocery, working from a library or coffee shop, etc Now, under lockdown, we don't go anywhere, and I see my essentials have shifted again.

Comfy slippers, warm cozy toppers, pants that are flexible enough that permit long periods of sitting. My shoes and outerwear are going unworn...

Ah, good point. A car length wool coat, a car length trench coat and a short quilted walking coat. Any of my dark neutrals are fine for this. I also need leather gloves and solid color knit scarves in non-scratchy knits.

So, my work has gone to casual and to flexible WFH, which means my essentials have shifted. My neutrals are cream, grey, black, army green and dark brown. Here’s a go:
Jeans: black and blue, bootcut and cropped;
Trousers: tailored trousers in my dark neutrals, a mix of full length and cropped;
Trousers: casual woven pants like cargo pants, joggers, etc, in my dark neutrals;
Sweaters: Swackets or long cardigans in my neutrals;
Tops: Bracelet length, elbow length and tanks in cream knits;
Shoes: ballet flats and loafers in black and dark brown.
