Denise, I don't hate the musicians....at all. I just think that they don't represent St. Laurent very well. I could see them doing something for All Saints for example. It would be like St. John using them . It just confuses me.
I am just looking at it from an ad campaign and making sense of it.

RJ, wow !!! She is beautiful ! And the photographs are too.

ETA : I just told my husband about this conversation. He is a musician. I wondered if I was off about the feeling of disconnect. And he put it really well I thought. He said that when one now thinks of Courtney Love or Marilyn Manson, one no longer thinks of their music but rather their "personalities". He said that people like Patti Smith even Dolly Parton are about the music and not their "antics". He said it was like Denis Rodman going to North Korea. Denis Rodman is not thought of so much anymore of as basketball player but rather on outsized character. Mercedes would not use him in ad, but they might use Larry Bird or Danny Ainge or Magic Johnson. ( My husband also told me about the time that Marilyn went through an airport in France with F ... Y.. written across his face. Who wants that representing them ? ).

Slimane loves photography, Los Angeles and music so I do see the relevance. I think he is introducing his handwriting to the womenswear market after years of designing for men. http://vimeo.com/34040022

As an aside did you see the photographs of Frances Bean Cobaine shot by Slimane? http://www.hedislimane.com/roc.....eHomeNo=57

But I don't think current, modern houses are about looking backward for inspiration. They are celebrated and admired for their forward-looking aesthetics (e.g., Celine). They do things that are innovative, fresh, cutting edge. That's what gets people talking (and buying), IMHO. Slimane's choices seem, well, cheesy and anachronistic to me.

But maybe I will be totally proven wrong and Saint Laurent will explode in terms of status, awareness of the brand, and sales :)! Then he can have the last laugh (along with Courtney and Marilyn).
Let's put it this way: 1) they all have recognizable style, and 2) we know who they are immediately.

I'm not a label historian by any means and YSL means nothing to me. If anything, I think of their logo and a certain kind of stodginess. On the other hand, I do know who the people in these ads are, and I would never have associated them with the label So, if Hedi is trying to shake stuff up - he did it.

Also, TBH, unless an ad campaign is actively skeevy (looking at you, American Apparel) it doesn't really color my opinion of the actual clothing. It's not like I'm going to look like that ad when I put on the clothes!
So, just to chime in one more time, here's my view of Slimane's choices. I think it takes guts to use someone like Courtney Love in an ad campaign. And having met her in person, although flawed, she is still a human being. It's definitely not a PC choice which the rebel in me admires. Now, off to work, promise I won't press my point any further!

Here's my two cents worth - like it or not, Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson are symbols of the 90's music scene and are famous for well...being famous. Is it possible this collection is aimed at the age category who grew up with this music and these famous folks? This 40+ crowd would be the ones who could afford these clothes.

I think it's an artistic and rather gutsy move on Slimane's part and let's face it, if we're discussing what we think of these models on YLF, the designer's reason for using them has already worked - we're looking and we're talking.

I am all for retro-ressurecting - like Travolta thanks to Quentin. And I love that older musicians are being marketed as models! To Denise's point. Tickles my toes. But I agree that the image has to fit the fashion house. To Jonesy's point. Courtney is a stretch for SL. Patti Smith and Kim Gordon - better! Marilyn, I guess, just makes me smile. And I don't know what to think of that representation. :)
Denise, do you mean Quentin Tarantino? As in, how he resurrected John Travolta's career? Your perspective on Courtney Love fits with what I have thought of her, and makes me question Slimane's choices further :).

Aaaaah, Patti Smith! Now she is someone who has got it goin' on. Have you read her book, Una? It really is beautifully written and inspirational. And her musical contributions are not up for debate. And her style! Androgynous rocker style FTW. So genuine and true to herself, too, with so much integrity, wit, and intelligence....
Neither of them are relevant style icons or have much class in my mind - it's not about some YSL elitism (I don't even really follow designers) but the idea that (as I said) I associate at least CL, quite literally, with puking. It may be a way to rehab them culturally, but its a turn-off in my mind.

Now, my alma mater just gave Patti Smith an award, and I would have KILLED to be there for that. She is iconic to me.

http://news.brynmawr.edu/2013/.....or-student
OK, I get it. But I think music is really, really messy with lots of personal failure. Courtney has never been liked. I have met her in person and my reaction was not as negative as I was expecting it to be. It was neither negative nor positive; I see her as a massive narcissist. Also she is quite hard-hearted according to a friend who knew her from the music scene in the 80s, before she became famous.

I see this all as a rather Quentin-inspired move. Also, designers extract a lot of inspiration from music figures even if they have negative public images.

Here is my take, Denise. Courtney Love hasn't been a musician for a long, long time, and has devolved into somewhat of a public spectacle for her substance abuse, bad relationship with her daughter and former members of Nirvana (I believe her daughter demanded and obtained the severing of her parental rights), and general trainwreck-ness. She sort of teeters in and out of public view based on her rambling, incoherent Twittering, but she has lost any sort of relevance or respect for her musicianship/coolness/whatever long ago. Even in her heyday, she seems like a poor fit for Saint Laurent. Similarly, Marilyn Manson doesn't make much music anymore and has no real cultural currency, nor does his style or presentation of self seem to gibe with the Saint Laurent brand. Picking these two makes Slimane seem bizarrely out of touch.

As I mentioned, I really like and respect Kim Gordon (she is an active, legendary musician, has dabbled in fashion design collaborations, is smart and interesting, has a strong personal style, has integrity), and so she seems like a good choice to me.
Honestly, I don't really understand why you all hate this so much. What is wrong with using real musicians for models? I like the way they styled Courtney in a classic suit channelling Brian Jones. And yes, Kim Gordon is great channeling Patti Smith. I like that these are real people and the women are much, much older than real models. I am not upset, I just genuinely want to understand why this is so bad to everyone, would someone please explain? I must be missing something.
