Real riding boots (for riding in!) are unlined and tight- the riding boot look boots are often unlined, suede, or have a polar fleece type of lining. I like the sueded type best, but have no issues with unlined boots.

Mine are lined with some spongy stuff...for warmth. They are not "real" riding boots but Clark's riding boot lookalike winter boots. They are good for our climate, though. I don't find them too hot to wear now, but they keep me warm in true winter.

The best quality boots will be lined with smooth leather or else have no lining at all, like many Frye boots, so that the suede side of the exterior leather is against your leg.

My La Canadienne boots (I'm not sure if they classify as riding or not) have a "Breatheable technical microfibre lining that wicks moisture from foot". It's nice because it keeps me from swimming in sweat when it's a bit warm out, and keeps me warm in the winter. Plus it feels comfy when I wear my boots with bare legs.

Sometimes they'll be leather lined - smooth, soft leather.
I've run cross Miz Mooz ones that have some sort of faux fur lining!!
There are some that have a layer of slippery nylon/polyester with a thin bit of foam behind it (next to the leather).
Then others are just the unlined leather backside of the leather shaft.

The leather lining ones are usually, but not always, better quality.

As long as its comfortable, the lining has never been a problem with my boots. Unlined ones can be harder on tights.

The best ones are lined with more leather. Ones lined with fabric are ok, as is fleece so long as they are for cold weather. I do NOT like ones lined in synthetic leather - it's nasty, sticky, and does not breathe. Why buy leather boots if they're going to feel like fake leather anyway? I have a pair of riding boots that are fabric lined but have the icky fake leather at the top. As a result I cannot wear them with bare legs because they stick to my legs and give me a heat rash.

What lines tall leather riding boots? Should I look for anything in particular? The ones that I have my eye on have something soft on the inside ... dunno what it is though.

Thanks!
