I hadn't seen that one, Sarah- thanks for posting that. I consulted a bunch of different charts/calculators, etc, before deciding on a goal weight. I'm 5'5" and my goal weight is 134 pounds. That's 100 pounds from where I started because I came up medically obese at my starting weight with every chart/calculator that I could fine. I don't know if that is realistic or not because I have never been that weight as an adult, so I will see when I get closer.
The calculator that Sarah posted gives me an ideal range of 136 to 149. It's nice to think that I may not have as far to go as I think that I do. I used to think that I would just be able to look in the mirror and know when I had reached where I wanted to be, but I am struggling with so many body image issues that I don't know if that will really be the case.

Thanks for that sarbear - I found it very useful. Unfortunately, it tells me I'm 'overweight' by 14-something pounds. It said my healthy weight was between 132 and 145.2

Oh well, onward and downward - right?

I'm doing great. My husband is on a business trip and for some reason I always do really well when I'm by myself. I've been eating salads for one meal a day, and it has definitely helped.
I added flax seed to my diet some weeks ago and that really helps keep things...regulated. I don't get puffy anymore.
VC, I wouldn't recommend a goal size, necessarily. Sizes are quite relative these days.
I have a medium bone size and I'm also 5'6". My healthy weight is between 135 and 145.
Here is a weight calculator:
http://www.healthcentral.com/d.....6-143.html
Beyond weight, though, it is probably most important to focus on your body fat percentage.
The best way to get tested is to go to a gym or nutritionalist. http://www.healthchecksystems.com/bodyfat.htm
I have a scale that includes my BFP. It isn't 100% accurate, but it's close.
I was at 33% 20 pounds into my weight loss. I'm now at 26%.

I'm feeling much better this morning (yay!). Not sure I'm up for the gym yet, but I'm feeling a nice boost of energy, and not so 'cold-like' anymore. I think maybe I got a head cold on top of the flu or after the flu or something silly like that.

No matter though, it's going away :)

I dropped another half pound over night. Know what though? I seem to keep losing and re-losing the same stupid five pounds over and over again, and am having a hard time getting past that. Two weeks ago, I got to a new low...and was all excited, but then I got sick, and of course there were a few 'off plan' eats (plus no gym)...

So, I'm something silly like 0.7 of a pound above that nice, new lower weight I saw fleetingly more than two weeks ago. Frustrating to be sure.

I wanted to ask - how do people know what their goal weight is? I'm having a hard time determining this. I'm definitely not where I want to be yet though. I have a horrible feeling it's because I have a relatively small frame for my height (which, isn't tall - just 5' 6"). I wonder if maybe I should pick a size goal instead.

???

What does everyone else think about this issue?

I'm down a couple of pounds already, and feeling much better. I am really looking forward to my Yoga class tonight. It's funny, I never used to pay attention to my weight before- never even weighed myself. When people would say "Oh my gosh- I've gained 5 pounds!" I would think : big deal! How much is 5 pounds. Well, I can FEEL the 5 pounds now, and it *is* a big deal! 5 pounds is the difference between many of my clothes fitting and not, and I'm not short either.
Anyway, I hope everyone else is starting to feel better and get back on track, too!

anne: don't you worry - you'll eventually feel better and get over the cold. In the meantime, there's always being extra-attentive to eating really well.

Made a huge salad yesterday with tons of organic baby romaine lettuce mix, leftover roasted broccoli from the previous night's dinner, grape tomatoes, english cucumbers, kalamata olives, green onion ends, olive-oil packed tuna, balsamic.

I feel the tiredness too, so am not going to push it with going back to the gym until I'm well and truly over this thing. I'm much better than I was though, so now I have enough 'oomph' to improve the food aspect. Can't do my exercise? Well, I CAN absolutely excel on the food front in the meantime.

Hi Sara, I am another one who is being derailed by illness. 2 weeks ago I got over the flu and had 2 days of feeling great, and 2 walk/runs ( I am just trying to get back into running) when I came down with a head cold. I know people say you can still exercise with colds but at this stage of unfitness I just can't. I am too tired.

after5: your meal plan is a lot like mine - lots of vegetables, some protein, and small amounts of 'good fats' (olive oil, avocado etc.) - I don't count calories, carbs, fat grams or points. Three decent meals a day (and the occasional snack if I feel like it) and it all works. I manage to get in at least five 'servings' of vegetables every day - and the 'serving' is not as big as most people might think - a lot of people assume, "five servings of vegetables? are you kidding me?" - but really, it's just a giant salad at lunch and a small portion of vegetables with my dinner.

I have not been to the gym in 13 days now, which feels like a big deal. I usually go every weekday morning. Looking forward to getting back in there once I'm completely over the flu bug.

Khris, I'm SO glad I'm not the only one. To be honest, I have given up weighting myself. It got too depressing when I was eating well and exercising and not seeing the number do anything except shoot way up, so I gave up.

So now I'm just making my goal to exercise 5x week for 30 minutes or more, and to get back on a plan where I am eating lots of veggies, lean proteins, and whole grains and limiting sugary and salty snacks (my downfall.) If I lose 10 or 20 pounds through the process, great. Or even if I just make it back to the healthy BMI range and stay there consistently. I'd like my pants to fit more comfortably, but I'm not making the number on the scale a goal anymore.

Shiny- my monthly issue isn't normal fluctuations, it's due to the fact that I eat a calorie range that accomodates my normal exercise schedule and then am not able to keep that up during that week. Two of my days at the gym consist of a yoga class and a cardio class. You are not supposed to do inverted poses during the first few days of your cycle for health reason. My classes are about 75% inverted poses, so there is no use going to class that week. Since I am skipping Yoga, I tend not to do the other class either. Those classes are spinning and zumba, both of which burn a lot of calories. That's one thing that I have to really force myself to do. Even if I don't keep up my normal pace, I need to exercise. I also need to adjust down my calories if I am adjusting down my workouts.

Just wanted to say congratulations to all you ladies for taking charge of your health! I've finally started exercising about 4.5 months ago after talking about it for 4 years (almost exactly since my daughter turns 4 this weekend). My main motivation was health with a side benefit of being able to wear the clothes that I like. I am over halfway done, I took care of 10 lbs, and I have about 8 lbs more to go. All I can tell you is that diet is almost everything. Although I work out - cardio 5 days a week and 300 workout (with my husband) 2 days a week because it is brutal, I found that diet is really the key. Since I love to cook, we've always eaten lots of veggies, but I would combine starchy with non-starchy. Now, we have thrown out potato, pasta and any other starchy staple, and replaced them with those amazing low-cal veggies. The starch day is Saturday when we enjoy a pizza that my husband makes. And that has made a huge difference. We also know that this is how we are going to eat for as long as we live.
Shiny, I totally noticed the relationship between the monthly cycle and weight, except that I thought I was going crazy, not that my body was behaving differently. So thank you for posting that information, :-)
And I wouldn't obsess over BMI. It is not an accurate measurement of how you are doing, meaning that you can have a high BMI yet be in a great shape because muscle weighs more than fat.

Chewy: the monthly thing is quite interesting. In the past, I have charted my weight loss next to my monthly cycle. I did this for months. I probably still have the cool graph if you want to see it! It really helped me see I was still losing, albeit very, very slowly, and to put all the fluctuations into perspective. Now, I am not on the pill, so this may not work if you are. But what it revealed was a consistent pattern, certain peaks (around ovulation and TTOM), and with the steepest weight drops in the last two weeks of my cycle. Interestingly, there has been research that shows women burn calories at a higher rate during this time. (But we may also eat more too).

Velvet - that change in BMI is fantastic! You should be very proud of yourself. Quite an accomplishment.

Re: the last 10: it is hard. I find I lose the last 10 at rate of 0.5-1 lb per MONTH. And the closer you are, the slower it goes. You have to be really patient and persistent and not give up. It's about lifestyle changes at this point. You can't starve yourself either - that backfires! Just eat the amount of calories to sustain your goal weight, and you'll get there... eventually. There are no quick fixes, unfortunately.

I stepped on the scale today and it read 107.8. I nearly died, as that is my goal weight!! I stepped on and off several times, not believing it. I did a happy dance, and had a few joyous hours.

Then later, I realized the flat iron cord was ever so slightly tucked under one of the scale's feet. Darn. :-(

On the plus side, I'm holding steady. Haven't gained anything. Just kinda hanging out here neither gaining or losing. Looking at the bright side, I am really good at maintaining!

I'm sticking with 'autopilot' mode for now, but as soon as I feel 100% better, I'm seriously going to clamp down again on all fronts - food, exercise and so on.

velvetychocolate- hope you feel better soon. Being sick really throws a wrench into things.

Laura- I think that people don't want to make comments about weight loss (or gain) since it's so personal. Either that, or people are so wrapped up in their own lives that they really don't notice. I know that my weight loss has been really gradual, but I can't imagine that people really don't see the difference of 50 pounds!

Hanna- I think it's really inspiring that you have been able to find a way to make it work through ramadan. It must be nice to have a running partner.

Kristen- I am experiencing the same thing. The first 40 pounds just flew off, but I have fought tooth and nail for the last 10. The hard part is that I still have another 50 to go! We will get there!

I'm working on getting in all 5 days of exercise, and I've been journaling everything I eat.

my goal isn't really weight loss -- just fitness -- but i thought i would check in anyway! i just started week 6 of c25k yesterday. back to interval training for this week, but from next week on it's working up to a full 30 minutes of running. the BF and i are signed up for a 5k on october 4th. i'm so excited! i think my stamina has increased significantly, so for the last week before the 5k, after completing the program, i will concentrate on speed.

the difficult part is doing this during ramadan. no food, no water -- we run half an hour before sunset so that when we get back it is right on time and we're able to replenish all the energy we've just lost.

Doing terribly here! I feel for you Khris ... I am up in weight too. Ugh. Time to start chiseling it off again.

The odd thing is, when I did get the weight off, no one noticed (except me). And now that I feel worse, no one notices that either! Oh well. Back to working the plan. I am also doing goals a la Angie and trying to get a schedule together.

Ok - I'm excited now. The last time I checked the BMI thing (months ago now), it was 33-something. Just checked again, and it's now 25.8

Pretty neat! Now, if I can just get past that 24.9 border, I'm going to be even more pleased. I'm right on this cusp between 'overweight' and 'normal'.

editing to add: I just went and plugged in the numbers from my starting weight, and my starting BMI was 39.2

I hope it's ok to join in on these threads - they help :)

Me? Well, I just battled a bad case of the flu for the past week and a half. Mostly all better now, still some lingering sort of 'cold' symptoms. This meant some minor off plan eats, owing to not feeling like cooking proper meals. I'm up a couple of pounds from the low I saw about two weeks ago.

I've also now missed almost two full weeks of gym-going. I was pretty sick, and there was no going out. I'm not sure if I'm quite ready to hit the gym again tomorrow morning - we'll see. So, when life throws you a curveball - you have to be sort of flexible about things - right? I mean, I stayed 'mostly' on plan but zero exercise and not the best menus, that's for sure. It was 'whatever works' and literally forcing food on myself when I felt particularly ill.

Today? Well, I'm going to make certain I have a big salad for lunch. There's something magical about filling up on lots of vegetables. The more vegetables I eat, the more weight I lose. Of course, there's protein and good fats in there too...but veggies are kinda 'magic' for me. They keep me away from the other stuff too. So, it's all good.

Speaking of shoes - I'd forgotten about this. I ended up with some knee pain shortly after buying some new gym shoes. At first, I didn't realize it was the shoes, but then later on - remembered that years ago, when I used to run a lot, I had to go and get shoes for people who 'overprontate' and had to go to a specialty running store for all this. It was like, "Aha! I still need proper shoes". So, that's on the agenda too - need new shoes. The ones I bought are okay for weight training, but not necessarily for long walks or long stints on the elliptical.

I think anyone who exercises regularly should replace their shoes at least every six months if possible. Runners might need to do it even sooner. Oddly though, we don't think of this as we slowly become 'exercisers' and lose weight etc. We don't think of ourselves as serious athletes or that we'd need new shoes all the time. Interesting isn't it?

Ok - off to check my so-called BMI, even if it's not the ideal for exact goal-setting (that thing can't account for new muscles being built!). But, I'm curious as to where I am, generally.

The last week has been terrible for me. I gained quite a bit of weight due to bloating and not exercising. I had just figured out a calorie range for my new exercise regime that was working, so this is frustrating. It's also a monthly issue, so I am going to have to figure it out. I am already back down a little bit in weight, but not back to what I was two weeks ago. I am really trying to push through to my next mini-goal (which is to get my BMI under 30). I'd like to get there by the end of the month.
I was having some problems with m,y hips and knees bothering me, and I bought new shoes for working out. All of the issues are gone now. It was a good reminder to buy new shoes regularly- I use them more than I used to, so I will have to replace them even more often.

How is everyone else doing?
