I had the same thing happen to me. I lost 6 kilos recently after losing a whole lot of weight and thinking that was it and buying clothes. I have just taken my dresses I love to the tailors. I bought new jeans and I'm slowly rebuilding my wardrobe. I figure if all my clothes are fitting, I will find it harder to put the weight on as I will have to maintain my weight to fit all my clothes!

Congrats on the weight loss Tricia! I had the same problem, 12 months ago I went out and brought all new clothes and then lost 12kg/26lbs and now nothing fits me. Sadly I am still hanging onto some stuff but I realise that this is holding me back from having things in my wardrobe that I truly love and I can wear. I will be sad to see them all go but I know it's something that has to happen.

Cool. I definitely knew I'd keep the jeans, and I took a bunch of pants and skirts to the tailor today. Oddly, I don't seem to be having this problem with most of my tops - most of the weight seems to have come off my waist/hips/stomach.

I'd keep the jeans in a holding zone and bag up the tops. Start afresh and celebrate the new you!

If too-big items can't be tailored then they get donated. You've gotta enjoy the fruits of your labour by having clothes that actually fit you!

As an aside I see lots of really really large clothing at thrift stores and I always like to think it's donated by people who have lost weight in these massive transformations and they are all healthy and spritely now.

Tricia, Congratulations on your weight loss!

I lost 12 pounds two years ago (South Beach Diet) and had to replace most of my jeans. Only the previously tight ones still fit! My tailor saved most of my jackets - they were all too big in the waist, where I lost most of the weight. I gifted most of my fitted tops to my two friends who wear size 6 and 8 (I'm a 4 now).

Altering those jackets wasn't cheap, but I'm glad to be able to wear them properly nipped in at the waist now than I'm slimmer.

If it's more than a size too big, I toss it. I will keep the next size up in jeans because they are expensive and hard to find (and all it takes is one bloated day to bump me up). Go ahead and get your stuff altered and make the commitment of keeping the weight off.

I have the SAME exact problem!
I've lost 13 pounds and everything is baggy!
Don't be afraid, big clothes in your closet can hold you back! This is a way of declaring that you'll never go back, because you CAN'T.
I sent to the taylor first the pieces easier to alter such as skirts, dresses.
If I like the work she did with the skirts, I'll send the jackets.I have so many big jackets, but jackets are hard to alter... let's see how it goes.

As I think I've mentioned, I've lost about 17 pounds since September - some of it pregnancy weight I gained over the summer and some of it extra weight from the last few years of having kids. I'd like to drop about 7 more pounds and then I'll be done.

I bought a lot of clothes last year when I was about 10 pounds heavier than I am now, and they're all starting to hang off me. Some of them are clearly things I can let go, either because they weren't expensive and aren't worth it or because they can't be altered (like sweaters). I've bought new jeans. But most of my other things, especially skirts and dresses, I'm thinking of taking to the tailor. I haven't worn them enough to justify giving them away, plus I like them!

But for some reason I'm afraid to do it - partly because I'm afraid the weight loss won't last and I'll have a bunch of clothes that don't fit again. Those of you who have lost or are losing weight, what's your strategy for altering/replacing?
