Miranda, it's great that you are so active, have cut out the junk food, and are eating so many fruits & veggies! That is fantastic. It is very possible you've had a recent growth spurt since your last doctor's appointment. I have this hunch you may have grown another inch, which would explain the unexpected slimming down. Check your height!

As a swimmer & a runner, you're going to need lots of carbs. Choose healthy carbs rather than junk food. Stay away from fad diets that require you to cut out entire categories of food. This includes gluten free diets (the latest fad)-- Celiac is real but rare, and only an endoscope biopsy can prove you have it. If you are looking for a reliable source on nutrition, google Dr Walter Willett Harvard University or check out this site: http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/

Your brain uses 70% of the carbs you take in every day. And your brain right now is growing/ pruning at an enormous rate (read the book: The Primal Teen). So you should only be cutting carbs if you are diabetic.

In a nutshell, here are some guidelines:
1) Strive for at least 9 servings of fruits & veggies a day.
2) Have some healthy fats at every meal: very important because many veggies have fat-soluble vitamins so you need a bit of fat or otherwise you're not getting the full value.
3) Have some protein at every meal, but also realize that the body cannot process more than 6 oz of protein a day. I don't care what the body builders say.
4) If you can tolerate it, it doesn't hurt to have a bit of dairy at each meal (yogurt, milk, cheese).
5) Have a handful of walnuts every day.
6) Make up the rest of your caloric needs with healthy carbs - whole grains. Increase or decrease the servings of carbs according to your exercise needs that day. So on days you swim or run, you can have an extra serving or two of carbs. Protip: I always find if I cut my carbs too low, I have problems falling asleep.
7) Minimize process foods, refined grains, junk foods. But at your age and weight, you can probably tolerate a little -- say, a serving of junk a day.
8) No sodas, not even diet sodas.
9) Fruit juice in moderation (one small glass a day). Or not at all - have whole fruit instead.

The most important thing you can do for your body is to nourish it and exercise, while aiming to maintain your weight. Dips up and down at an early age put one on a course for a lifetime of yo-yoing. Research shows that this yo-yoing is more harmful than maintaining a consistent weight year after year (no matter whether that weight is under/over or at ideal).

Just checking in to echo what's been said, particularly "however you're happiest is best," provided that you have energy to get you through the day and through your workouts. I wouldn't give it a second thought until after you've been training for a month of two, since the training will shape your figure a bit.

If you are happiest with additional weight, you might try searching for 'bulking diets' for women weightlifters. It sounds more dramatic than it is, and usually entails eating a little bit of surplus and consuming enough protein to put on muscle. If you want to put on proportionally more fat, then you would lower the protein level.

Aside, the difference isn't so noticeable to me to the extent that I thought your third pic was a recent pic. You look great in all the photos, but do whatever will make you both happy and healthy.

I agree with lisap that at your age, your weight should take care of itself. However, if you're like my DD, it might not. My DD has always had trouble keeping weight on--so much so that I asked our doctor for an Rx for appetite stimulant medicine. That worked, but caused her to eat a lot more than usual and gain weight in all the wrong places if you know what I mean. While in college, one of her friends who happens to be Celiac told her about gluten sensitivity. She made an appointment with our family doctor to discuss it, and was advised that it's okay to go gluten free as long as the rest of her diet is healthy. That's what she did, and she no longer struggles with being too thin or too chubby. And yes, she's always been very active; goes to the gym every day. This is just something she discovered for herself, and she feels a lot better physically. I'm not telling you to try a gluten free diet or anything. It's not for everyone. But if you're underweight, this may be the problem. Good luck, and whatever you do, keep eating healthy and exercising regularly.

I wasn't going to comment here, because I really am against the idea of manipulating your weight at your age unless it's medically necessary. But.....I have a daughter only a couple of years younger than you, and this makes me think of her. She lost almost 25 lbs this year - and not intentionally. (or so she assures me ) She is very athletic, plays competitive basketball and ultimate, and trains in the gym. This hadn't changed in the past several years, but all of a sudden her body did. At first i was alarmed, as she was getting pretty thin, but then it levelled off. I keep an eye on her - because I care. With your level of activity, it's more important to make sure you are getting the nutrition you need . At your age, your weight should take care of itself. Nutrients, quality of food and water intake should all be your priority. You have a lovely body - and that feels weird to even type that. Treat it like the vehicle for activity and energy it is. And don't worry about gaining or losing! If you start that now, it will only become a lifetime of up and down dieting. Sorry if I sound like a mother

Thanks for the replys everyone! I'm entering training now, and yes I'm still under 22, but I've never done swim before now and I'm only joining to stay in shape. I used to be a cheerleader and then I grew out of it around a year ago. I run at least a mile every week day also, but I used to do longer distance. I don't deliberately diet, it's just that I started to eat more fruits and vegetables on a regular basis versus the junk food I ate regularly at this one last year. Only since August have I noticed myself slimming down. All the weight on my hips just vanished, along with most of my chest, when I started to eat healthier starting around June. I don't know my weight at the moment, in July the doctor told me that I was in lower average section. Since then i know I've lost at least 5 lbs, which when placed in the bmi calculator makes me underweight. I don't want to make myself gain weight to be normal with swim right around the corner.

You're definitely not an hourglass you're a petit rectangle I think. You kind of have my mom's shape which is an inverted triangle but she gains most of her weight is in her thighs or like your hips. My measurements are 36-24-35. I still don't see that as an hourglass because of the shoulders. Your shoulders are supposed to be as wide as your hips not wider. Not narrower.

I made a thread about this you can gain anywhere apparently as an inverted triangle so your shape can imitate different things at different weights but you're basically the same down to the skeleton.

If you are entering training season and your doctor agrees you are at a good weight for your height and age I wouldn't worry at all about gaining or losing weight. Focus on fueling yourself with healthy food and getting the right balance of protein, fat, and carbs. Eat when you're hungry. Enjoy your sport. If you gain/lose/maintain your weight so be it as long as you are making healthy choices. Your shoulders may be slightly more pronounced at the lower weight, but that is very common with swimmers. You look fab at both weights. Don't stress, just be healthy and happy.

Hi Miranda, may I ask your age? You mentioned swim starting. Are you under 22 and still in school? If not ignore this post.

If you are, it's not a good idea to deliberately diet at your age and when you are already well within healthy BMI zone. By all means exercise and eat healthy, but please don't deliberately cut calories or go on a diet. You need the calories because even if you have reached your adult height (and I grew a full inch at age 21-22), your brain is still growing at a rapid rate, as are your muscles, bones, and capillaries. Your bones in fact reach maximum density before age 24 -- and then it's all downhill from then on out. There's some reason to believe the same is true with muscles.

Also if you are a swimmer it's possible the weight you lost was muscle, not fat, during your off season, and it will come right back on -- in the pleasing places you want it to -- as soon as you get back into swimming --- provided you are taking in adequate calories.

You still look pretty hourglass-y but with a stronger shoulder line. FWIW, at least with me after I've lost weight, I've noticed that it takes a few months, even up to six, for the weight to redistribute. I've also read that for many women they lose weight from the top down but gain from the bottom up. You may want to wait a bit and see if your weight redistributes as well as figure out what it takes to keep your weight stable.
