I loved hearing about your trip, and you certainly hit some of the highlights! I'm so glad you had a great trip. It's such an amazing city. Vicki, April should be a lovely time to visit, too. Have fun planning. Some great suggestions listed above.

Vicki, the recommendations were really great. I had walked the Brooklyn Bridge before, and thought it was highly worth it. Also, I really enjoyed the shops on Bleeker Street, as well as in the Bowery Area. There are a lot of really great shops on and near Elizabeth Street (Avenue?). And the shops in the Meatpacking district were fun, too. I thought that the Scoop had some interesting pieces that I hadn't seen elsewhere, and I got a sweater at the Joie store there that I hadn't seen at Nordstrom.

Two great restaurants that I can't recommend enough are Bluehill and Mas Farmhouse. Very different, but excellent locally sourced sustainable food.

Marmee, so glad to hear you and DH had a wonderful time. I'll be there April 9-13 to join my brother, so I'm going to use a few tips from your thread.

Thank you all for your helpful responses. DH and I had a fabulous time. The weather was fabulous on Saturday, and a bit chilly on Sunday, but it never rained, despite the forecast. Our hotel room was fabulous, a NYC first for me. We ended up mostly riding Citibikes and walking for transportation, with some cabs. Highlights were the Gugtenheim, MoMA, Kinky Boots, Central Park, Highline, Empire State Building (DH sprang for express tickets!) and the gluten free donuts at Tu-Lu's. Plus some really stupendous dinners.

The shopping was fun. I bought a couple of cotton sweaters, and did a lot of looking and trying on. I went to Rag & Bone to try on the Dre's (BFs), thinking that they would contradict the Nordstrom recommendation to size down, but they agreed with Nordstrom that they should be fairly snug.

I was completely surprised at the large numbers of people wearing a) workout gear, and b) tight and fairly thin leggings. I saw very few people wearing relaxed skinnies, and almost no one in BFs. I even saw someone (who was otherwise very well dressed) wearing what appeared to be tights for leggings. In the shops, lots of SA suggested that I could wear tops with leggings, even sweaters that didn't cover my behind completely).

I didn't end up wearing the floral Nikes, but wore a plain black version, gold Paul Green sneakers, and my flat black Alberto Fermani boots. I felt a bit casual in the Nikes, but we were biking and walking, and they seemed to fit in with our activities.

P.S. I cannot stress too much the importance of shoes that you can walk yourself to death in. Virtually no one in New York bothers with "sitting shoes", no matter how pretty.

From Meatpacking, if you walk up Tenth Ave to right before 19th St. there is a Steven Alan boutique there. At the corner of 19th and Tenth is "Story", a shop that changes its theme every six weeks or so -- for example, around Valentine's Day the theme was "Love Story" -- so that it functions like a gallery (West Chelsea is full of galleries).

You'll be right near Chelsea Market, an indoor space that takes up the full block between Ninth Avenue and Tenth Avenue and between 15th and 16th. Inside there is a large Anthropologie, lots of little shops and bakeries, a big open space reserved for pop-up shops that are always changing, and a bunch of restaurants. It gets VERY crowded in there on weekends so be forewarned.

If you want quick, cheap eats, there's a diner on Tenth and 17th called Star on 17, and if you want something more chic, continue on Tenth up to the corner of 20th and you'll see Cook Shop. Also fun is The Park -- a huge restaurant where they've literally created an indoor park. That one is somewhere between the diner and Chelsea Market, on Tenth.

And of course the High Line, as Diana mentioned.

Have a great time!

Following Una's theme...go for ice cream at Serendipity. Unbeatable and so worth the wait. Get your name on the list, then go window shop while you wait.

I'm not a New Yorker but my favorite thing to do there is to go to the High Line. It's an elevated park built from a repurposed train track/ rail yard on the lower west side of the city. I got engaged there! You'll be right near it in the Meatpacking district.

I love the museums too. MOMA is free on Friday afternoon, and I believe there is a pay-whatever-you-want window sometime on Sunday for the Frick. The Cloisters is also incredible if you like medieval art (they have the Unicorn Tapestry there) and the grounds/building are really cool, but it's way way way uptown and is somewhat difficult to get to.

ETA: Shopping. There is so much good stuff. I always like Century 21 - I think the big one by the World Trade Center is the best. You have to like bargain hunting though. I recommend going in the morning as the crowds get unbearable later on in the day. Same with SoHo - IMO it is best in the morning right when it opens, especially on a sunny day. And I am not a morning person at all, but honestly I love much of NYC best in the morning.

I don't live there now, but I'm an NYC native, and my favorite thing is just to be outside and walk, walk, walk. The Brooklyn Bridge is a great walk - as is walking around Flushing and Jackson Heights in Queens, where a lot of the city's diversity is concentrated. (This is a particularly good area if you are a food person, since you can find EVERYTHING.)

Which museum? There are so, so many good ones.

If you have especially nice weather, it's hard to go wrong people-watching in Central Park - especially since everyone comes out when it feels like the start of spring.

DH is in NYC on business, and I'm going to join him this weekend. We'll have all day Saturday and Sunday. So far, all we have planned is dinner Saturday, and a show. We're staying in the Meatpacking district. I'd like to do some shopping, visit a museum, and explore.

NYC Fabbers, what are your recommendations for my weekend? Do you have a favorite boutique? What is your favorite non-shopping thing to do? How would you spend your time?

Thanks!
