We did our own flowers...and spent the entire evening before the wedding making arrangements in my parents basement. I would do a combination of both. Get the important arrangements done by someone else, but do the table arrangements, etc. yourself.

I say that if your Mom has done some flower arranging in the past, and you are also having a rustic style, then you will be set. Go for it! I would not plan on being able to do much on the day of your wedding (you have to go get ready at some point and then with photos, etc!), but it really depends on what time you're getting married. We got married at 4 in the afternoon and I had time in the morning to help out, but left at around 11 to go for hair, makeup and photos. I had lots of time the day before as well, so it should be feasible!

I used to work in a flower shop, so you can get around doing flowers a little earlier if you use flowers that last a little longer e.g. daisies, mums, ferns, carnations, etc. Fragile flowers would need to be added at the last minute - but you could always do the longer lasting flowers a little more in advance. And yes, expect prices to be higher because of Mother's Day - one of the busiest days of the year for florists!

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Mani. =) I think it should be doable. The wedding is in a lovely outdoor setting, so even if the flowers end up being a bust, there will still be beautiful trees and scenery to look at. I think my Mom is actually going to do a lot of it, since I don't know how busy I will be the day or two before the wedding. (Problem with flowers is that you can't really do them ahead of time!). She's already planning to enlist some of her siblings to help her set up and stuff, since I definitely won't be able to help with that. (Logistics demands that the set-up be done in the morning and early afternoon on the day of.)

ETA: Also, in keeping with the outdoor, slightly rustic setting, I don't want my flowers to be really "done" anyway, so it's a lot more feasible for a DIY thing.

Bride and bridesmaids sitting up to do the bridal bouquet and the maids' nosegays, groom's buttonhole etc on the evening before used to be pretty customary in the pioneer days in some parts of America, didn't it?

Go for it, Diana --- I'm sure the artist and crafter in you will enjoy it. It would be nice to have a few more hands, if there are other willing friends and cousins around, though, so it doesn't become too much to do at the last minute (depends on number of guests and kind of decor).

In a far different context but for similar reasons (budget plus inability to find what I liked), my friends did my wedding 'flowers' (involved more grasses and pith and peacock feather than blooms) for me, with just a little direction from me --- I didn't have much time to get hands-on myself, since the days before are filled with rituals and ceremonies for the bride, but it was still tons of fun and precious *because* so personalised!

Thanks, all. We ended up using weddingwire, since it was free and they had nice templates and the ability to have a mobile site as well as a regular website. Is there anything in particular you guys like to see (or hate) on a wedding website?

So far we just have the basics - info about the location, events, etc; link to book the hotel; directions; link to (as yet nonexistent) registry; guest book; a couple of photos; list of things to do in the area. Have gotten rid of music, flash animation, cheesy "our story" page (sorry if you like those, but it's so not my thing).

In other wedding news, I am *this close* to deciding to DIY our wedding flowers (with a lot of help from my mom!). Am kind of shell shocked at the price of flowers (we were quoted "# of guests x 20 = dollars it would cost, plus we are getting married the day before Mother's day, which apparently drives up the cost of raw materials as well). Well, at the price of everything, but flowers I can do something about (unlike, say the caterer, which we do not get to choose, or photographers, which I clearly cannot do myself). My mom is very excited about this prospect, though, which makes me think it might work. Plus she loves flowers and has even taken flower arrangement classes.

We used The Knot when we got married but I am wondering if a group on Facebook would do the same thing? I don't remember people using our website much, but we've been married 5 years, so maybe they are used more now.

J. and I need to set up a website for our wedding, where guests can find info, link to our (as yet nonexistent) registry, etc. Does anyone have any recommendations, suggestions, tips, etc? Thanks!
