I love weddings for opportunity to look like a princess even if you're just a guest))) Although i'm not a professional artist, I'm quite good at make-up and I made it for my friends when they got married (I've found one photo). So, if you decide to do make-up by yourself, use natural colors for eyes (light beige, tan, greyish brown) and your usual kohl or eyeliner. Don't forget about bronser and masсara, and lipstick is up to you. Natural eyeshadows work for every colouring, I used them for blonds and brunettes, with hasel, green and blue eyes. They're always perfect.
But if you'not sure, you'd better choose a pro and a trial 2-3 days before is a good thing. I always do them, if I haven't worked with the person before.

Frankly, the only time I've had my makeup done, I was not thrilled -- it was too heavy handed for my liking, and I didn't totally feel like me.

I did my own for my wedding, and I may not have been the most perfect looking bride ever, but I looked like myself.

Get your makeup done with the bride, it might help relieve some of her anxiety as well since it sounds like you are more comfortable with make up stuff in general than she is. Does the artist have a website or instagram or something you can check out?

Isn't the Makeup Forever HD powder the one that's causing all the "flash back" in the photos of celebrities? Angelina Jolie and others? You think a celebrity makeup artist would know which products are not good for flash photography but geez it keeps showing up in the tabloids!

My recommendation is to have similar yet toned down version of the bride's makeup. You don't want to have really cool cat eyes or wild lip color if she doesn't.

If there'll be photo close ups, I'd recommend a pro. I was involved in something recently where I had the opportunity to use a pro & declined. Boy did I regret that decision: My usual home-done makeup was awful on camera, and my pores looked like something the Mars Rover could land in. But my colleague who opted for the artist and looked slightly clownish in person looked gorgeous and very natural on camera.

I like Angie's and Diana's suggestions to get yours done with the bride. If she's worried, it might be calming to have you there too. In my limited experience w/ this sort of thing, what looks 'natural' IRL looks washed out & blah in photos. Since the photos will be the lasting memories, might it be worth the 'surprise' of seeing yourselves looking more 'done' than you're used to seeing? Of course if it's hot w/ lots of dancing, there is the downside of makeup melt.

I can't even imagine applying the good false eyelashes (the ones you put on one by one, or in small groups) by myself so that's something I'd definitely go to a professional for. I'm not sure even the MAC counter people would be able (or willing) to do that.

Can the bride still get a trial run for the makeup artist? I had mine done 2 days before my wedding because I was coming from out of town and couldn't do any earlier. They were OK with that although I did do an allergy test with the foundation on myself earlier just to be on the safe side.

I think hair and dress styles date way faster than make-up. Remember the Princess Di dresses of the 80's.
Today's natural make-up is different than 70's or 80's. I think the Kardashian look will date even faster. Red lipstick has been around forever.
Plus you are capturing a moment in time, shouldn't it represent that time.

I think you already do your own make up really well as it stands up to harsh outdoor lighting time and again. My only thought about bright lipstick is would it look dated too quickly. I'm not sure. Guess I love for wedding photos to be as timeless looking as possible. I hope you report back on what you try. I need to do my own makeup for my sister's wedding in November.

Ok, this is becoming an ARGHHH thing.
Bride booked a professional make-up artist, but never did a test run. So she's afraid she'll hate it. She considering doing her own make-up; I guess she did for her engagement photos and she was happy with it.
I want fake lashes, and was considering a cat-eye liner. Both of which I suck at doing.
I went down the rabbit hole of wedding forums for make-up tips (BTW NOT recommended a singleton). I have NARS sheer glow foundation which some say is good, but MakeUp Forever HD is better. Conflicting reports on their HD powder, which I might have some, somewhere.
I do have a free make-over from Sephora when I got bumped up a level, but I was hoping to save it to tweak an everyday look.

Hmm, I'd probably get the makeup done professionally but then again I know next to nothing about makeup, especially foundation-type things. I remember when I had mine done for my wedding they said you actually need more foundation than you might think because sunlight is very bright, or something like that. Whatever the reason, it looked natural in the sunlight but somewhat unnatural in the studio under lower artificial light when they did the test run. I know you also need it to be more matte than normal to control shine. And less dark eye makeup because it can look like dark shadows rather than smoky, so I think natural eyes/bright lip is a good idea.

I agree that it depends on how comfortable you are with having someone else do it versus doing your own. Although I've seen some pretty scary makeup done by artists for weddings - they can tend to overdo the shadowing and such. If it's outdoors, natural looking makeup is going to be SO important. But I prefer an underdone look versus and overdone look.

It really depends on how confident you feel re doing your own make up for a special occasion. You always look great to me but it can be nice to have the added confidence of having a professional do your makeup. They do it all 'properly' and it seems to have the staying power. Having said that I did my own make up and hair for my wedding and I have never regretted it

Many of the photos you've posted here have been outdoors and you always look great so you apparently already know how to do your makeup yourself. You have such a strong look that makeup is really about enhancing it rather than creating an illusion.
If you can find someone you trust, it could be fun to have it done.
It could also be interesting to get some new ideas too, you tend to emphasize with strong lip color, I would be very curious to see what a makeup artist would do with your beautiful eyes.

For my sister's wedding, I did my makeup myself. I wanted it to look light and natural, so I just used my own foundation, concealer, blush and lipstick, along with light eye makeup. My sister got her makeup professionally done....obviously.....but I was happy with how I looked in photos.

I'd go with a bright lipstick if the eye makeup is very light.

Those hair clips are lovely!

I would tend to get it done professionally, mainly because a makeup artist should be better equipped to deal with makeup in photos. They will know just how much to apply for the billion shots you will have taken!

It's a good idea to use your own lipstick either way, because then you have it ready for touch ups.

I've been away on and off, and I think I missed your final dress choice? And finally have fun!

So this Saturday is the wedding I'm the maid of honor in.
I just confirmed the bride is wearing flats. We have less than inch in height difference, so flats for me too. I will post shoes options tomorrow.
I'm getting my hair done by my hairdresser with these pins holding back the short side and the rest of the hair swept over to the left.
But I can't decide whether to get my make-up done professionally. The wedding is outdoors, and the only thing I know is that you shouldn't wear sunscreen or overdo concealer, especially under the eyes.
Bobbi Brown had some article where she said keep it light and natural, but that's her whole shtick. I really want to wear a bright lipstick.
I know the bride's getting her hair and make-up professionally done.
