And jewelry, bag, etc. can take an outfit to dressy. My SIL borrowed a dress from a friend for a recent semi-formal wedding; I don't know if that is a possibility, but it saves from having a one time use item. That's also why I like separates sometimes for dressy events as they can be worn apart for more casual wear. Neutral colours like black, grey or beige are what I gravitate towards.
