I think you could choose a classic dress and bring it up to date with your accessories, hair and make up, but you need to find the dress first.

I agree with Alecia about taking a shoe with same height of heel you would wear on the day.

I also recommend taking a little extra time in the morning over your hair and make up to make you feel extra special!

You've gotten good advice. I loved the idea of a sort of slip-like dress, but knew the minute I started trying on dresses that they weren't for me. So I just tried on all sorts of stuff and I knew when I tried the dress on that was to be mine. (And thankfully, it was relatively reasonably priced.)

I think the idea with the shoes it to have a similar heel height. I didn't find the shoes I wanted to wear until much later. I had certain criteria for my shoes. I needed a wedge because the wedding was outside and I didn't want to be in heels on the grass. I also didn't want too high a heel so I could be comfortable throughout the evening. I wasn't too keen on the idea of a separate pair of shoes so I looked for something I thought I could wear throughout.

Thank you for the tips! I am definitely going to allow the sales assistants to pick some out because I really have no idea what I am looking for. And I am bringing only my mom and sister (MOH) although my future mother in law I think is angling for an invitation. We have three appointments so I may let her attend one so she feels included but I don't think having her there the whole time would be productive. But that's another story.

I am petite (5'3), brown hair and eyes, more olive colored skin, hips on the larger side and broad shoulders from swimming butterfly back in the day. I'll be 28 when I get married but look young for my age. I think I want something that will be classic, as in it won't look totally dated in pictures years from now but I think because I look so young something too classic would look stuffy on me and I definitely don't want that! So a classic but not too classic design. Also, I'd like some sort of nod to the times, some aspect of my dress or ensemble that is 'now', if that makes any sense.

Also, what type of shoes do most brides wear? I've been told to bring shoes similar to the shoes I"d wear to the wedding to my appointments but I honestly have no idea what type of shoes I'd wear. Thanks!!!

I totally agree with the suggestion that you let the sales people make suggestions. I ended up with a wedding dress nothing like what I thought and my sister has just chosen a dress that is nothing like what she had pictured herself in.

Hi, Mellllls.

Strangely (considering that I'm not married), I have loads of experience with this. I worked in bridal for many years when I was younger, in design, production and retail. One of my first jobs in the fashion industry was working as a design intern for Justina McCaffrey (you might not have heard of her- she's like the Vera Wang of Canada ;), and I ended up managing her flagship boutique for a short time, too. I have helped *loads* of women pick out their wedding dresses.

So, here are my top tips:

1. If you can possibly bring yourself to, go shopping alone, or with just one or two other people (you MOH, mother). It is so much easier to pay attention to what flatters you/what you really like without a whole bunch of opinions flying around. Once you have a better idea of what you like, or even a few "finalists" picked out, you can go back with a larger contingent (it often takes several visits to the same salon to buy a dress!). I know wedding dress shopping seems like a fun thing to do with a big group, but the brides who show up with all their bridesmaids, mother, mother-in-law, etc. tend to have a harder time making a decision, and (in my experience) are more likely to doubt it later on.

2. Definitely try on loads of different styles/shapes! This is so, so important. There were so many times when I had women come in and say "I want x, with y sleeves, in z colour" and ended up with something completely different, which they loved! We don't often wear gowns these days, so it's hard to tell what will actually flatter you until you start trying them on. To that point, I agree with Julie- let the assistants pick some things out for you, because they'll likely have a good eye for it.

3. Having said that, don't be afraid to tell a pushy assistant NO. If you know that you don't want a ballgown-style skirt, don't let someone bring you one after another (maybe just one, to make sure that you really don't like it).

4. Wear a good strapless/convertible bra (even if you don't want a strapless gown, it will be the least likely to interfere with the dresses) and nice, new panties! Sometimes the assistants will end up seeing you in them, if a particular gown is tough to get into, or is a sample size and needs to be held at the back. (Don't worry about it- they do this every day!)

Hmm, I think that's it for now. I will keep thinking though, and get back to you if I come up with any more. Hope you have a great time!

How fantastic.

It is a little daunting looking for your wedding dress.

What is you body shape Mellllls? Are you Petite? How do you want to appear on the day (elegant, princess, Hollywood starlet)? Knowing the answers to these questions would allow for a more tailored response.

I would also suggest allowing the assistants to select some dresses for you. My friend was set on a white strapless column for her ceremony but was persuaded to try a gold lace dress circle skirt design with three quarter length sleeves. The dress suited her perfectly.

I very much hope you enjoy your day bridal shopping.

Hello All! I'm so excited that I finally remembered my ylf password so I can post again So I have some long overdue questions. I am going shopping for my wedding dress next week and am very nervous. I don't have a really good idea of what I want or what I should be looking for. I am looking for an off-white color as the wedding is in October and I will most likely be getting some sort of topper to cover my shoulders for the ceremony (unless I choose a dress that covers my shoulders). I don't think I want a train. Any suggestions about what I should be thinking about or looking for? I've looked at dresses online but it's so hard to see the details that nothing has really struck me...
