I understand your feelings about finding something more interesting than the classic sheath dress. Could you get creative with accessories with a neutral sheath?

WOW! I love that black dress but in the detail photos I can see the major issues your worried about..... If only it fit a little better and the lace was sewn down.
I also really like the second blue dress, I think it suits you beautifully.

SF, I wonder about a built-in bra or support could work too. If a dress top like this is structured enough, I can go without a bra, oddly enough for someone with my chest size. The gown I wore to the mayor’s inaugural ball a few months ago is an example.

I’ll take the high-low dress to the tailor for a consult, but first I’m going to show it to my niece and see what she thinks, whether it is the appropriate level of dressiness for the event and locale.

Thanks for all the feedback!

I love the high low dress the best. Stunning on you. It might be worth checking out if it can be altered. I am not a fan of strapless bras either. I wonder if a built in bra is a possibility. I find a backless waist length bra most comfortable for those kinds of dresses.

I think it depends on how truly fancy the wedding is . . . I like the Nicole miller but wonder if it might end up being too much for the occasion (just based on what you've shared). The one you already own is actually my favorite of the other two. I think the white down the sides is slenderizing.

These all look good on you Janet - but I do see the fit problems with the Nicole Miller dress. I am not sure about tailoring but it might be worth finding out if you genuinely love it.

I wear a strapless bra sometimes and while not my most comfortable I find it fine with a tailored rather than body hugging bodice.

That gap between a party dress for someone in their 20s or early 30s and the traditional MOTB dress or suit seems to be quite large.

Maybe I should see what my tailor says about altering the halter dress. Tacking down all that floppy lace sounds kind of like a time consuming (I.e. pricey) extra enterprise. I suppose I could get out the navy thread and do that part myself when I have an evening when I want to torture myself...

I can’t seem to make it a Find on my phone, but this one is similar but the colorways are more my speed:

https://m.shop.nordstrom.com/s.....pe=product

Still it’s not a huge departure from the lace sheath. It may be worth trying though.

OMG! The midnight high-low dress is just stunning. Head and shoulders above anything else you have shown. A good sewist could tailor it, sew in corsetry so you don't need a bra, and tack down the bumpy lace.

Ah, thanks Lisa (I was a bit distracted when I looked, at a microbrew and band festival, haha!). I took another look — the navy and ivory would be the only colorway that works for me (for this event and/or for my personal style), and I’m not crazy about how high contrast the treatment is. At least not for an event where I will be in photos. I’d prefer if it were a uniform tone-on-tone effect on the whole dress, for my personal taste. Hmm. I dunno. It doesn’t seem too far from the lace sheath idea really. LOL maybe now is not a good time for me to look and post; I’ve had a beer or two.

I really like the first blue one and think that with the right accessories it will feel like "you." The high-low dress just blows me away with its gorgeousness! If you could find one that fit better, it would be a real option.

Hi Janet --

From a fit/color flattery/photographs well perspective, #1 is a great choice.

I like the idea of #2 as I love the background blue on you. But the fit would need some work in the front and [disclaimer: me thing] I'm getting Edgar Allen Poe vibes from the pattern...like the tendrils are crawling up to get you! Much better from the side, wish they just did the white all over.

The drama of the high/low dress is so interesting. Since it's just the bodice that's so textured I don't think it's too lumpy (and I question whether the sticking-out parts are intentional...perhaps just loose and either way you could get them tacked down). However, I have to say it reads quite dark on you compared to the blues in #1-2.

Lisa, that looks beautiful but not quite right colorwise, plus the light band across the hip region puts me off. But for someone else, gorgeous!

Colette, I’m on my phone but will click through and take a closer look at that. I don’t want to go too bright and multicolor for my niece’s wedding but it looks pretty from what I can see.

It’s so cool looking and interesting, which I am not but you are. The picture is not doing this dress justice and the colors are much brighter in person.

To your point Lisa... Just out of curiosity, a few minutes ago I scrolled through Shopbop and Nordstrom’s “cocktail” dresses and ugh, if it’s not short/young/weird (with spaghetti straps, very bodycon, wimpy prints, etc), it’s a very traditional cut. Or it’s $2k.

Seriously, where does one find an interesting, age- and occasion-appropriate event dress for a 50-something woman who wants to wear something a little different??

No, Lisa, I know exactly what you mean! I default to a sheath because it’s a style that is a) relatively flattering on me b) not too girlie (fit and flare usually looks too young on me now), c) often cut in lengths that hit below the knee, d) available in a range of price points. I would LOVE to find something more interesting than your typical sheath that is still flattering on me and works for a summer event. If anyone knows how to find this mythical creature, please chime in!

Yes, I see what you mean about the fit of the hi/low one, and the sticking out lace bits. Weird. The other two fit well and are "fine" - but I think you can do so much better and more interesting . If such a dress exists out there. There's nothing wrong with the two sheaths, but they are predictable, if that makes sense?

As I am on my phone I had to zoom in to see how spectacular the embroidered dress is. You will look amazing in any of them. And I agree, photos please.

Ok, before getting dressed (and putting on any makeup so ignore my pale bare face), I tried these on this morning.

I’ll present without further comment at the moment, but photos 9-12 show the fit issues and the lumpy lace. Such a shame because otherwise I quite like it. I think I need a size down (and a strapless bra) to make it work. I’ll keep an eye on their website in case one comes up available, but even then, the flappy lace is a weird thing that I’m not loving.

I'd love to see the middle dress (called "high low satin" in the photo) on you . I think it would be cool to try something completely different for this wedding .

WHBM is killing it with dressy dresses this year. And skirts. I popped in today to see if they had this one to try and they didn’t but I tried on others that were all so great. Wish I had a need for half a dozen dressy dresses this year.

I can see why you like the lace sheath better than the Tadashi Shoji, it definitely doesn’t photograph as well as the other but I think they are all lovely dresses. Looking forward to seeing them on you.
