I know my favorites from those dresses, but of course what matters is how they look on you. I don’t know what Rockstuds are, so look forward to seeing them in pictures too.

3style, that’s a good idea, but I find shoes WAY easier to shop for than dresses! I have some beautiful nude Rockstuds that I hope to wear for the wedding.

I wouldn’t rule out a suit, but I’m not sure that would be easier. I have paid no attention to suits in years though — I would not want anything office-y. I wouldn’t even know what designers to look at!

I like Angie's ideas. I've decided that I will never shop for a dress again--it's just to hard to fit the body I have now. I don't expect to attend any "big" wedding any time soon, but I intend to be on the lookout for a two piece suit or even a pants outfit.

What great fun for you! A wedding in London--how lucky you are. For some reason I think London wedding=a gorgeous suit in a beautiful color. Some old movie inspired I'm sure.

Maybe you could try starting with shoes instead? I still remember three weddings in which I was wearing less than ideal shoes because I started with the dress and scrambled for vaguely appropriate shoes. Once I had shoes intended for trousers with a skirt, once I had sandals which were too cold and too casual, and once I had shoes which were too warm and too dark for my dress. Of course, I don't actually remember my footwear from any of the weddings wherein I got the shoes just right.

Thanks, all! I’m on my phone so it’s hard to respond individually, but you’ve all given me some good ideas.

I thought I’d get a jump on the process. I ordered these four dresses — casting a style net fairly wide for now, just getting an idea if any of these could work. I always seem to look so much better in printed dresses than solid ones for some reason (I guess maybe because prints keep the eye moving around and help camouflage lumps and bumps). Also being careful at this point to order from places with lengthy return windows. We’ll see what happens! Thank you for all the great ideas and feedback.

I can vouch for elpgal as well for Rent the Runway. I just have to be careful about ordering things with sleeves since my top half often needs a petite length, which is not always available. My favorite dress ever was from RTR, and I wore it to two events (with different crowds).

I haven't read all the comments but what about trying 'rent the runway'. Vix posted about it in great detail a while ago. Atleast, you will get to try a lot of dresses and narrow down what brands/sizes work for you.

Janet, I honestly think you could fit in and look gorgeous in separates or trousers or a jump suit. If it helps at all, my sisters MIL wore trousers to DS wedding and looked very cool. Plenty of time ahead too. August can be quite wet!

It sounds like your niece is classy. That dress sounds beautiful.

Too bad if it’s too warm for the Fuzzi dress. It is gorgeous on you—certainly not matronly!

You have the figure to do the complete opposite of matronly and go classic bombshell, but it doesn’t sound like you’d feel like you.

Someone mentioned having a dress made. This sounds like as good an excuse as you’re going to get, if that idea holds any appeal for you at all.

I like the idea of a dressy jumpsuit, if you really don’t like dresses. If you shop at Anthro a lot, then you probably already know that they have a lot of them on their website. Their dressy dresses that someone mentioned are over at their bhldn site, but when those go sale, they’re on Anthro’s sale page. If you’re heading to them, you might as well look at their kimonos. A flowy, flowery one with silky or gauzy pants would be totally festive and special, as well as super comfortable.

I’m not sure anything in my closet would work (other than the aforementioned floral scuba dress), unless I’m in a real pinch. The dressier separates I own are more fall/winter and would look decidedly out of place in August. Gah, why does everyone keep getting married in the summer?

No real advice apart from echoing what Angie says in that you don't have to wear a dress and maybe a review of what is currently in your closet just in case you do actually have something suitable :) It can be too easy to get stressed thinking we have to have something new for an event. Sometimes we do, but sometimes we don't. I have a couple of options in my wardrobe now for weddings (admittedly not for super formal occasions) and I just wear the one I most feel like. I've been doing this for a couple of years now:) Good luck, what ever you come up with will look amazing.

Very exciting news.
I feel your pain, the search for the right dress is always one I find hard.I never have much luck in boutiques I need a large store with a big selection to try. My niece is getting married in November in London at the Lambeth Palace Garden Museum. I've been scrambling for a dress. I contemplated wearing one I have that I love and have worn to 5 weddings. The color being bright orange is more of a summer color and I felt like it also may be too bright for the wedding. I'm limited to shopping options where I live so travelled a little to a Lord and Taylor which has a huge dress department.
You look great in dresses and I'm sure you'll find something amazing as, unlike me , you're starting your search early!
Keep us posted.
Below is what I bought.

LOL I’m a 32F these days. Any dress that I could wear without a bra would be a miracle indeed! Good to know, though!

re: the bra under a Halo dress issue - funny you bring that up as one of my friends (who had a breast reduction and is still quite "curvy", shall we say) was telling me how great her BH off-shoulder dress was because it was so well-constructed inside that a bra wasn't even necessary - which I found interesting. She was offering to lend me this dress if I ever needed it - which made me burst out laughing at the thought of me wearing a fitted dress - but she swears they are that great.

Thanks, Angie!

Separates are certainly an option. I barely even own any tailored skirts anymore, so I'm not sure that shopping for two pieces to wear together will be easier than a single one, but I wouldn't rule it out. :-)

I have a paralyzing fear of looking matronly, so I find myself steering clear of anything that looks even remotely mother-of-the-bride. I like the idea of a jumpsuit if an appropriate one turned up. A suit? I'm not so sure about that -- I haven't worn a suit in nearly two decades, and I'm not sure it would be my style, but again, if something turned up that looked interesting enough, I would consider it. Maybe a suit with pants -- a skirt suit just sounds way too business-y for me, but honestly I glaze over at the idea of a suit, so I haven't even paid attention to what suits look like now. Maybe there is something out there that is cooler than what I envision. I'm thinking a suit jacket in August may not be what I want.

I would also like to get something that I can wear again for years, that's not too occasion-specific. Ugh, I know this all probably sounds like I'm whining and asking too much. Occasion wear seems to be an area where I have a hard time melding my personal style preferences and my flattery priorities. Just browsing online briefly, everything seems to look either too matronly or too hootchie. My sister and I were bemoaning this as she has been starting to look for a MOB dress.

Congrats. How marvelous.

You're wise to start the search now Janet, AND don't think you have to wear a dress. You could wear a skirt and top, a suit, a jumpsuit....keep your options open.

August in London will probably be muggy, and maybe a little wet. But hopefully it will be a gorgeous sunny day. I know London quite well. Where in London is the wedding?

Lisa, I bought a gorgeous Black Halo dress a few years ago, at my smallest size when I was training for my second half marathon...and my weight has only gone up since then. I sold that dress, tags on and unworn, two years ago. :-(

I would try something of theirs again. I tried one last year before my stepson's wedding, and it was *thisclose* to working -- just a bit too tight and the next size up wasn't available. Their cuts seem to be not far off for my proportions. I did a search online for their current offerings and didn't find much to get excited about, but it was just a cursory look. I like off-shoulder on others, but it's hard for me because I need a real, supportive bra and I hate strapless bras. But I wouldn't rule it out if I found a really fabulous one.
