Gosh, and here I was complaining about how grey and dark the days become in the UK during the winter - at least we can still navigate the world outside during our (relatively light) snowfall...

I forgot how depressing those weeks from December to February can get though, when you barely see the sun before it sets at 3pm... Vitamin D supplements and exercise feels so difficult but important to prevent SAD!

I'm attaching a shot of sunshine for those of you dealing with snow right now (I've never lived somewhere you needed to dig your car out of it!) since I'm in Hong Kong now. They just had the hottest February day on record at 26C, and it's ~17C at night. I also just got back from Pakistan where it was 10-15C, but you definitely feel the cold a lot more in countries that aren't designed for it (no central heating, carpet etc). Instead, summers are brutal when you'd melt without AC everywhere you go...

Hallelujah! After getting practically no snow in January, we’re under a winter storm warning. In some parts of the mountains they’re expecting up to eight feet of snow. This is great news because our snow pack was at only 50 percent of normal. I had a few things today and everything has been cancelled. What a shame. :)

I dub this "Southwest Spring," and it is a great time of year. Usually bright sunshine, and a real presence of the days getting longer. A little nip in the air that can range anywhere from 35 to 60 degrees. When I was a kid this is when I would start riding my bike. It makes you want to pause and window shop, or just take a breath of air.

It's been in the 20s F and below about every day for a month, which is definititely not normal for my area. Last week we got a foot or so of snow, topped with a half inch of ice, and it's still there. You can walk a couple steps on the ice, then break through into these sharp glasslike shards. The back roads and even some in town are still a mess. Luckily my neighbor has a Bobcat and plowed my long driveway, or I wouldn't have been able to go to work.
Thankfully, my sensitivity to wool (at least merino), cashmere, and alpaca has abated, and that's all I want to wear right now!

I slept through the earthquake, but the most hilarious thing about it was that every single person I spoke to or read a post from that did feel it, thought it was a massive snow plough going down the road at first ... Which says alot about our weather and apparently our snow ploughs hahah!!

LJP, yes, an earthquake! I felt it, too. It happened around 11:00 pm. I asked my DH if he felt it but he said no, nothing. We saw the reports next morning :)
This is not the first one. Fortunately, they are not strong here, no more than 4.

Mary, I’ll be right over! ;-)

Seriously, I like winter but this is not fun conditions. We hired some guys with a Bobcat to come attack the area in front of our garage today, and now it’s possible to get our cars out.

I took my husband’s truck today to get out of the house and go to Pilates and then grab a poke bowl for lunch. I was feeling a bit stir crazy so it was a good break. But just when I got to the end of our driveway (which is very long, hilly, and with curves and in shade with many patches of ice), I slipped and fell on my butt right in front of the truck, LOL. Nothing hurt but my pride. My husband was coming back up the street towards me, so when I started driving out, towards him, he stepped off the street into our neighbor’s yard…and promptly slipped and fell into the drainage gully in their yard — all a sheet of ice! He wasn’t hurt either, so it was just funny that we both hit the deck within about a minute of each other, LOL.

Cold here on the Black Sea. Colder and for longer this year. No snow. Around 0 degrees c in the day and up to minus 10 at night. It has subsequently warmed up a bit but another cold front will be hitting soon. Inland it has been much worse, up to minus 20 C on the Danube River cities at night time and lots of snow. Not that unusual for them.

After that weird ice storm on Sunday, my city is an ice skating rink with below freezing temps until next Monday or so. We’ve been in the house since Saturday and don’t think we can drive anywhere until they somehow remove the solid sheet of ice from the streets around here. We’re going to try walking to the nearest grocery store - only about 1/2 mile away - this afternoon, but I expect it will also be a bit treacherous!

This was our car when my other half went to dig it out on Monday. A solid week of temperatures well below freezing predicted. We haven’t had a proper snowstorm in Boston for about five years so it’s kind of reassuring. And I do not complain about winter because I much prefer it to being too hot. However, it is CHILLY in my home! Big old windows and the heating can’t quite keep up.

Western Australia is experiencing a usual hot dry summer - It is comfortable when temps stay below 40C because I have great air-conditioning and houses here are designed to stay cool and insulated with double brick construction. Winters can feel cold, even though temps never get to 0C because my house does not have much in the way of heating.
I find it weird when I go to ski in Japan at how hot it is indoors in winter despite the freezing temps outside. In Australia you need to stay rugged up in winter indoors too as we don't like to heat things up. It has to be pretty cold before we switch on an indoor heater.

Went outside today for the first time since Sunday. My poor husband has worked his butt off with the snow and ice, exactly as Janet described it (I'm about 45 miles west and a bit north of her). We have a snowblower, but the ice is something else. Very tough going, removing it. Three15 year old boys were walking around with shovels yesterday and Lou employed them to dig out the end of the driveway where the plow had boxed us in, and then I encouraged him to keep them going on our sidewalk. Since we're on the corner, it's double. It was pretty funny watching them from my office window - there's my husband doing triple time, and these kids are like, chip chip chip, stop, lean on the shovel. Chip chip, dig in a pocket for a granola bar. Throw a few snow balls. I was very glad to see kids doing this with their snow day, not just hanging inside.
It's cold. We have the neighborhood roaming cat in our garage with a space heater and a heat pad beneath his little tent. He goes out during the day but returns before dark, and gladly comes in.
A herd of 6 bucks strolled up our street, and then I saw an even larger pack of deer a few streets over. They have to be hungry - everything is frozen solid in the woods.

Not quite as warm as you, Mary, but the prediction is the low 70s in the next few days here in Silicon Valley. I'd just as soon as have rain for the next few weeks. We were checking on our drip hoses today to make sure they all work. We should not have to water our small lawn in January!

And for the family in the mid-west--cold, cold, and snow. It's been below 0 in some places. And family in Alabama, into the 20s tonight.

It's lovely here in So Cal after a cold and rainy Christmas and New Year -- it rained on the Rose Parade for the first time in 20 years! But today it is 73F and it's supposed to be 80F or warmer by the weekend! I spent the week at the beach up the coast last week and it was beautifully warm and sunny and lots of people were surfing! Not to mention our beautiful California beach sunsets (yes, this was last week with people in shorts!)!

I live in Wisconsin, we are very cold but not to much snow. A hearty group, we continue on.
I provide in home services for the birth -to-3 kiddos in our county so I am out on the roads. I used to ride a ferry back and forth to the mainland but no longer
I have a " back up" kit in my car that has heavy duty gear, snacks and water. But in 27 years the weather / ferry has not made me use it. The worst thing that happened is a mouse got in my car and ate sunflower seeds and tore up tissues while in the ferry parking lot.
So thankful!

We just got a very unusual storm of about 7" of snow, followed by hours of sleet, which put a thick glaze several inches deep of ice over the snow. Temps will not get above freezing until next week, which is also unusual here, so there is a lot of ice to deal with. Today my husband went out to try to cut a path to his truck to get out of the driveway (a neighbor brought his plow down the driveway last night to get us started), and he was walking on top of the ice, not breaking through to the snow! He weighs 220 lbs so that is saying a lot! He did manage to clear enough to get his truck out, and went to see if he could find more salt to help melt the ice on our driveway, but every snow- and ice-related product in three hardware stores was completely sold out. They even had signs on the doors.

We are fortunate enough that we don't have to be anywhere (retired and self-employed, respectively), but I know this is really hard for a lot of folks here. Schools are closed through Thursday, and it looks like another storm might be moving in next weekend. I leave the Tuesday after that to go out to the desert to hike and take photos, and it looks like that's the day the temps will finally get back above freezing.

Meanwhile, one of my best friends who lives in Colorado says they are seriously under their usual snowfall totals for the year and the snowpack is suffering for it. Ski resorts are struggling. Our climate is definitely going through some things.

Bitterly cold so we missed the snow , thankfully . Starting to warm up this week . Usual amount of snow - nothing dramatic .

@ Irina - the tickets are on my dresser drawer. Two more weeks.

An accident of nature results in most storms that hit Toronto either flowing north towards Peterborough, or south over the lake to Kingston and Prince Edward County. Those areas get more rain, wind, ice, or snow than we do. Regardless, this is a whopping weather event that looks like it will be drawn out over the next two weeks - at least.

Have a super vacay!

Carla, I thought you are away, enjoying Caribbean warmth.

You probably know what kind of weather we have here, in Toronto - a record amount of snowfall in a single day - 60 centimeters or about 24”My DH had to shovel it multiple times in the last 24 hours Snow on our upper deck, off the 3rd floor is chest high. It’s also very cold.

We are leaving for vacation in 4 days. I’m counting :)

@ JAileen - DH and I were just talking about something like that. The amount of snow we are getting is good for the watershed, for the farms, and for my garden.

Our forecast for the next week is dry. We should be building our snowpack, but we haven’t had a storm in several weeks. It’s getting serious, because snow melt in the mountains becomes our drinking water next summer.

It has been a dreadful January here in NZ with a huge weather event last week causing 8 deaths including at a campground. Climate change is making our weather warmer in winter and wetter in summer and very unpredictable.
