Just adding on (my auntie lives about 15 minutes away from Perth). When the sun comes out and you are walking around it can get warm fairly quickly so it's nice to have layers you can shed and carry easily. However if you are from a warm climate this might mean just shedding a coat, you might still want all skin covered on arms and legs.

Rain is very common, and there are often passing waves of showers, so it can change within a few minutes and there is often standing water/puddles to navigate even when the sun is out. Be prepared for cobbled streets as well, so rubber soles are great. Clothes that keep you warm when damp (like a lightweight wool pullover or cardigan or smartwool socks) are useful. Don't go hiking in jeans when it might rain (I say from experience). :)

Thanks, A. Good point about the rain and outdoor activities. My jackets are water resistant not waterproof. I've always wanted to wear a trench coat ; )

Hi Belladogga
Feel free to tag :)

I am packing a waterproof trench coat. It is what I would wear for spring here in Ontario but I am sneaking a fleecy sweater underneath for warmth in the wind. My trip involves a lot of outside walking so I am throwing a hathe and gloves in. Very windy weather gives me a migraine

I think the down parka may be too much but then we live a lot colder and are used to cooler Temps. I do think you have to consider rain. It can rain for days in Scotland and my activities will not be canceled for weather.

Thanks, A, for posting and to all for the good advice so far. May I piggyback your thread? I'm also traveling to the UK in May (Surrey and Perth, Scotland) and have been wondering about packing. I'm from the Caribbean so I know I'll be cold. Can anyone chime in on outerwear... I have a Land' End primaloft parka, a short twill trench style jacket from Target and a short waxed cotton jacket. Should I take some or all of these? Should I get something else? I don't want to spend a lot because I never need a coat as part of my at home wardrobe.

Ha Suz, that's exactly what I want but in black. I ordered a pair of moto boots from Naturalizer this morning as I know I can usually step into them with no 'breaking in' issues. I told hubs that I am breaking the shoe packing limit rule of 3 pairs.

I may sleuth out a Clark pair and eliminate one. I can often wear that brand easily too.

I am throwing in flat Mary -Jane type and a type of dressy athletic (think sort of Sketcher) type.

Thank you everyone. Great ideas here.

A, for my recent trip to Israel, I did my usual thing and packed more shoes than most people would. For me, this is key to ensuring comfort -- both physical and emotional. I walked anywhere from 8 miles a day to 14 miles a day (never less) and my feet survived extremely well. The temps were probably similar to what you may have in Glasgow. Weather was anywhere from 8 C to 19 C (it varied quite a lot). It only rained once, however -- which is different from what is typical in Britain.

I brought:

1 pair slightly dressy chelsea boots with small heel (these were for "dress up" and travel but also cooler evenings).

1 pair high-top wedge sneakers (for walking and in case it was warm -- but could also be worn with socks).

1 pair Mary Jane walking shoe (Ecco) with sneaker type insert -- for hikes and warmer walks (broken in, no need for socks).

1 pair sandal booties (in case of heat and for dressier occasions)

1 pair flat oxford style golfing shoes that could be worn in rain. (Made of some kind of magic vinyl).

I wore the sneakers most. The temperature was unusually low for the season and not forecasted. Had I known that it would be so cool, I probably would have brought my Blundstone chelsea boots. This is the type of boot that most people in Jerusalem were wearing at the time. Super for walking on cobblestones. But my high-tops served the same purpose and worked with socks and without.

I wore every single shoe in this package. Often I changed shoes more than once a day for different activities.

I would highly recommend a pair of casual but nice looking Chelsea boots and you can grab them on sale now. Shannon had a super pair of Clarks and JackieC also bought them. They did sell them at the Bay but may be out now -- not sure. I'm not sure if the ones I pictured are the right ones, but you get the idea. The elastics make them comfortable and easy on/ easy off. They did come in black at one time.

Thank you everyone. I have a 'wellie' boot which I love, short like Chelsea boot but I can't wear them more than 2 or 3 hrs as they get hot.

My goto walking shoes are like a men's slip on dress shoe by Josef Siebel. I bought them as a recommendation from my doc for sore feet, serviceable but goofy looking with ankle length pants..

You all have good ideas so I may go back to my closet and start from the ground up, literally. I know I shouldn't attempt wearing a new shoe.

I may post my travel capsule when I get closet.
Thx everyone

I've been to England in May, and that year it was sunny but still cold for a Sydney girl! Once or twice I took off my jumper but I still couldn't imagine sandals!
I think a pair of short comfy boots would be great , you can wear lighter cotton socks or heavier woollen ones, depending on the weather.

Louise is right: our good old British weather likes to keep everyone guessing. That's why we are addicted to layering, and why we always pop a mini umbrella in a bag or pocket.

As for shoes, I would go with ankle boots or some kind of closed toe shoe. If, as sometimes happens, there is a mini heatwave, you will be able to pick up a pair of sandals very easily while you're here.

As Louise points out, our perception of "hot" may be very different from yours! I'd keep a keen eye on the weather forecasts nearer the time.

Good old British weather! Early May could bring us a heat wave or cold and damp!! Layers is a great bet. Shoes wise I've already packed away my knee high boots but it would depend on what temps you're used to. My Dad worked in Egypt once and he and colleagues were wearing shorts and the Egyptians had on coats and scarves! I think ankle boots would be fine x

I love oxfords and loafers for trips personally, with perhaps a pair of pointy toe flats for dinners out (I don't wear heels). I agree with Suz about layers, and if you take springy colours in a scarf or shirt, if it gets warmer, you'll be able to fit in.

English weather is variable in my opinion, May can be lovely, and exposed ankles might be fine in London.

I also plan outfits from the feet up. If I had a couple of weeks in England/Scotland I would take
- One pair of boots- smart
- One pair of walking shoes/boots - casual
- One pair trainers
- Maybe one pair of heels.....or base any evening outfits around the smart boots.

Have a wonderful time!

There's no way I'd be wearing anything with possible ankle exposure in those temperatures (I just went and looked them up too) But their May temps are like our Australian winter temps.

Are you saying that you'd wear the moto boots to cover up the gap?

and BTW - hooray for the trip!

I vote for a pair of water resistant ankle boots that will work with all of your trousers, since they you can wear socks; my fussy feet and I always travel with a pair! Do you not own any? You might be able to find some on good sales this time of year, although of course retailers have suddenly switched to sandals *eyes snowy sidewalks dubiously*. But it's risky taking new shoes when you travel: what are your go-to walking shoes now? I'd plan my travel capsule around them, but that's because I do tons of walking when I travel, so I need perfectly comfy shoes. Unless they're beige suede of course.

I'm good with my clothes, I have layers galore. Last time I was there (London) I was expecting my daughter and there was a heat wave, I threw a pair of shorts in and wore them frequently.

PACK ME (in your suitcase). I promise to shelter you like an umbrella if you need it. ;)

I don't think you will necessarily need tall boots at all if you have decent booties that can take a bit of wet.

Layering will be key. I would take a wool or wool/cashmere/ cotton blend pullover (at least one); a leather or similar jacket, and a raincoat, plus scarves. And layer (or de-layer) as necessary.

Hello

I am flying to Glasgow early May for two weeks and then one week in London. I haven't been in 20 yrs.

I am flummoxed by the weather. Of course I have looked at the long range forecast but friends have told me they were very cold and damp when they visited.

I was planning to pack ponte pants and skinnies for day time and have tall boots for that. But I have some ankle length trousers for days I need to look 'tidy' but if is cold what is my footwear with ankle pants? I don't want cold feet.
Any ideas?

I was thinking moto like boots but it is not the season to buy, I see lots of flats and sandals.

Help
