Hilarious. I've been to San Diego and remember it much like described. Beach rats! My Marlene, are you in for a counter clockwise swing in the direction here in Seattle.

I think the gals have answered your quezzies well. I’d probably change the colours a little if the temperatures stayed the same. It would get so boring otherwise.

You're giving me insight into why I never learned to dress myself stylishly. Growing up in San Diego county there just was not a reason to wear layers. Top, bottoms, shoes, you're ready to go, any season. I loved it!

Marlene, I think you have it nailed! I agree with everything you said. I have bought some items over the past couple years that I really liked but that were too heavy for here and couldn't be layered. Fine for a trip to the Bay Area or Boston, but then they don't see the light much. Layering is key! I think the hardest thing is finding seasonal colors in the right weights! I think some tissue weight cashmere is on my list!

Every time I am downtown (and have walk out of the Hard Rock in particular) I see so many girls who have forgotten to put their pants on! My parents were in town and we had dinner there and I was embarrassed! They didn't notice, but I am constantly shocked, like you were.

Oh, you are lucky you are moving to Seattle, if only to be able to hire Angie to take you shopping to revamped your wardrobe and buy some Seattle pieces!

I have lived here in San Diego for 5 years now and finally figured out how to dress for this climate. Ironically, I am moving to Seattle next month and now I have to figure out how to dress all over again!

How to dress for San Diego....what I have noticed is that people will wear spring-y weight clothes all year long but the COLORS are what changes. For example, you may wear some light cotton pants in summer and they will be beige or white but the light cotton pants will be dark brown or black in the "winter". It definitely looks out of place to wear your tropical print shirt in the winter...even though it is 75 degrees! And yes, Hawaiian print shirts are absolutely acceptable here. Capri pants are worn year round - light ones in the summer, dark in the winter (sorry, Angie!).

Getting through the cold snaps is done with layers since no-one wears heavy coats - ever! I keep thinking a trench coat would be an ideal way to handle the periodic chilly days but I can't recall ever seeing even one! Really the frame of mind is that it is warm or is about to be warm. So don't bother with a coat.

I live inland San Diego and we experience a much hotter climate than the coastal areas. Hot weather gear is built around shorts, tank tops and sandals. Although this year, I have seen a major surge in sundresses and skirts. And walking shorts! Lots and lots of walking shorts. I'm hoping this means the end of those atrocious capri pants.

I will acknowledge that San Diego has a definite "beach" vibe to the clothing. But I have to say....I still think its inappropriate to wear your skimpy bikini covered only by a sheer swimsuit cover-up to a restaurant when you are not RIGHT ON THE BEACH. I see this all the time (insert throwing-up icon here). And I have seen more cleavage and butt cracks than I care to remember. Last month I was having a nice dinner at a sushi restaurant and a fellow diner was wearing a dress so low cut I was certain I would get some nipple viewing if she leaned the wrong way. Sexy or vulgar...you decide. OK...that turned into quite the rant!

So I hope that answers some of your questions. Basically, winter is here when everyone starts wearing their darker colored clothes! More a nod to the season than actual necessity.

Since I moved to San Diego almost two years ago I have been struggling with whether to dress seasonly or not. Most people here have a general disregard for seasons as our weather is fairly consistent. Sure, we have highs and lows, but we don't need winter coats here, it doesn't rain like Seattle, and it is nowhere near as hot as Texas!

In the Anniversary Sale thread I linked to a yellow Michael Kors trench that I think is so fun. As Angie pointed out, it is definitely a spring/summer fabric and a yellow wool coat would be more appropriate. I think I will take her advice, as I have plenty of lightweight jackets and could use a short wool coat.

My question is this: do you think that people in moderate climates should pay attention to seasons and try to dress in seasonal colors/fabrics, or is it appropriate to wear spring-y clothes year round when possible?
