I am not really a trend follower but I do like trendy jeans if they appeal to me. I won't wear skinnies but I was all over high rise wide-legged jeans as soon as I saw them. I bought the 7s, Jesse Kamms and BRs. Years ago I bought the BF jeans with patches when they were first trending. This is pre-YLF days.
I keep my tops pretty classic but I do sometimes throw something trendy into the mix. I bought a ribbed sweater with buttons on the sleeves this fall. Cardigans are having a moment and I have quite a few in my wardrobe. That makes me trendy but then I won't be when the moment passes.
If a trendy item wears out I would replace it with something different. I can never find a replacement.

It's long been my ambition to wear out my trends, and the reason behind my one pair of jeans, and one casual sweater per year restriction that I mostly follow. I would plan to wear each multiple times a week in the first year, and a reasonable amount the second. After that they may be relegated to lounge wear.
I am not immune to not wearing out other trends though. Like so many others I succumbed to a bell shirt blouse a couple of years ago because I wanted to wear a trend. No good for winter or summer so only worn in transitional weather, though I tried to wear it intensively then. Hopefully if Angie is right, I can continue wearing.

Suz, you’re right, I do a lot of cherry picking when the cherries I like are available.

I actually have some great jewel toned pencil skirts and should make an effort to wear them more. (I did somewhat during summer.) The difference was suddenly finding pants I like that were available in high rises, whereas low rise trends earlier meant very little out in the marketplace fit my body, so I defaulted to skirts and dresses more often.

Off the top of my head:
- I bought a (cheapish) black moto jacket when they were suddenly everywhere at least 5 years ago, wore it a lot and it's starting to show (not in a good way, as it's probably low quality leather). I'm not sure I want to replace with the same style by now.
- I was an early to medium adopter of the birkenstocks 3-4 years ago and mine are showing stains that are hard to remove: since the trend is still going strong and they are sooo comfortable I might replace

I think the difference between fad and trend is key here. When something sticks around for 3 years or longer it's easier to wear out your stuff, especially if you don't duplicate.

Kari, you look gorgeous in that blouse!

I think you wear trends more than you know -- you just cherry pick them and only go for the ones that work for you. For example, you used to wear pencil skirts when those were on trend and available in the colours you adore in comfortable fabrications. You might still wear them (even if off-trend) because they suit you -- and that makes sense! But as with jewel tones, you bought when the buying was good.

I tend to be a medium-late or never trend adopter and I’m totally okay wearing a trend that I like that has passed by. For example: I enjoyed high-low hem midi dresses and wore a couple knit dresses in summer from 2011-2017; now I’m wearing the asymmetrical hem Universal Standard Geneva knit dress. I wasn’t interested in boyfriend jeans or wide leg crops and bypassed that trend. I wear saturated jewel tones all the time and when they are on trend/available I stock up. I love the floaty romanticism of bell/flare sleeves and will happily continue to wear blouses (from late 2017/early 2018) like this. Ditto Pussycat bow blouses that I got in 2015. Moto jackets and dark skinny jeans and oxfords and colorful cat-eye specs and low-heeled booties are a staple for me. I jumped on gilets/long open vests because they suit me and my wardrobe. I LOVE Universal Standard’s mesh tops and dresses (Fog) for layering and I don’t think that’s really a trend. I tend to be less trendy in pants/bottoms and more willing to experiment with a top/blouse or a dress.
Also, it can take a while for trends to filter down to plus sizes, except in some fast fashion brands.
I’m very okay dressing with what feels right and not chasing most trends.

Sal, another reason your dress works -- it's a modified version of the trend and the sleeves are not drag-in-your-way long but a bit shorter. If I'd tried with bracelet length sleeves, I'd probably have loved it.

Well Carla, my game is to recreate trends that catch my eye with second hand clothing. And since so many trends seem to be on repeat: polka dots are trending again? really? I just SYC and sometimes the second hand store for whatever is going on. As a matter of fact, I just found another great pair of bootcuts that way. I can't think of anything specifically so trendy that I wouldn't wear it after it lost its trendiness, although it is possible I would lose my taste for it for a while.

Sigh, the wide leg crop trend of the past season did not end well for me. I invested in a few pair, and have sadly realized that my husband's poison eye for them is on point- they just do not flatter my curvy, sort of petite (let's just call me short), short-waisted self. I still have the slimmer BR ones that Angie sports, but have given away the 2 pairs from Loft (that I had altered...sad face). I still like the flowy yoga pants in this trend, however.

Luxury items in countries like China, Japan, and Korea

Navy Blue and Orange ANYTHING in the US

Flared midi skirts, hectic pattern mix, and fancy head dress in Africa

Synne, YES to your observation about turquoise - and it just came back. To your point, it's having its trend revival now. I'm milking what I can, and bought this pullover. I've already worn the heck out of it because I've been starved of turquoise! The colour won't date though. Our colours are always in style.

In the past I have worn out padded shoulders, gaucho pants, mom jeans, and the Western style embroidered shirts. I came to YLF to be able to be an early adopter of trends that appeal to me. I did not adopt the distressed jeans trend as not for me. In the Midwest an early adapter can probably get three years out of a trend. Some trends last longer or become classics. Trendy colors can be the most problematic like autumn colors or neon brights of the 80’s. If one gets too much of the trend, whole outfits an be affected. Manufacturers probably only pick a limited number of colors for their wares. Usually there is black, white, another neutral like a shade of grey or brown and a couple of real colors like a shade of red and a shade of blue. Angie can tell us more about how this works but she has often told us to stock up on best or favorite colors when they are available.

Ah, yes. Local trends quite fascinate me, and is a last bastion in an ever more deconstructed, uniform and corporate world.

I remember some years back (2013?) when everyone and their uncle was wearing big, fringed, burgundy red cashmere svarves around here. I think the brand was scandinavian Acne. I have not seen any of those scarves since. Wonder where they are.. they are not at thrift stores

Synne - we have all made mistakes.... the number of jersey tunic dresses I bought to wear with ballet flats and leggings......out of about 7 I had ONE success!!

And I do want to keep changing my style so I do need to experiment.

Suz did give great advice - the reason my black bell sleeve dress has been versatile is because - it is black, it is a good weight for our climate and I have worn it with tall boots, ankle boots, sneakers and my departed sandal/peep toe boots!!

And sometimes you can buy into a trend subconsciously - I have added quite a few linen pieces over the last year (or viscose with a linen look). I then read that linen was trending. I would have been influenced by the availability, probably forum members, and probably fashion articles, but it was not a decision I made deliberately.

Some trends never quite arrive here either - or are much more diluted. And we have our own trends that might be different to North America or Europe or even Australia.

You have the BEST topics, Carla! I certainly don't consider myself trendy, but I think Suz mught be onto something with her second point above:

"2. Ensure the trend is really *you* and not something you'll tire of easily. "

This is where I find I get tripped up the most. Some trends are hot and I find they work really well, and I can see myself in them for a long time (field jackets/utilitarian, white sneakers, faux fur toppers). Others like the peep toe booties example - I *think* I will like, I can sorta see myself wearing them, but then when I've shelved them for a while and look at them again, they don't feel like ME any more. Not necessarily because the PIECE is dated, but because it is dated for ME.

I mistakenly thought leather joggers and tuxedo stripe trousers where freshly new trends. I have worn these a lot the last six months.

I have also added some hounds tooth pattern, plaid, puffy shoulder tops and curduroy to my wardrobe over the last couple of seasons. Tried leopard print, long blazers and vinyl trousers. Which looked HORRIBLE on me. Guess i've been quite the fashion victim..

Trends I've adopted in the last year:

Aviator optical glasses (but this has already been around for 2+ years)

Luxe bomber jacket (maybe this is just as old?)

Cropped boot-cut jeans (but haven't these been around for that long, too?)

White sneakers (yes, I was late to this!)

My Fendi baguette is older, and I'll just say I was on the cutting edge when I bought it second-hand in 2015.

I have a bell-sleeved top from Madewell, also circa 2015, that I still wear.

Not sure what all of this adds up to, but I surely don't think of myself as "trendy."

Great observation, Jenn, regarding trend churn. Hasn't EVERYTHING had it's trend revival moment yet? What's even left? Do we start over and repeat? The last few years we have seen menswear, Aztec patterns, plaid, dogs tooth, leather everything, cowboy, and so on and so on. Fly by in the blink of a fashion eye.

The only thing that hasn't been around in a while, as far as I can tell, is the colour turquoise, Victorian era flimsy dresses, dropped waist 20's style, 50's retro women's wear.. what could they possibly surprise us with?

I am most of the time late adopting a trend. Have never hacked a jeans, but I bought culottes early.
I am happy when it is a trend that is flattering for me, then I check it out. Culottes, midi, carpenter jeans. After 4 years ylf my choices are better and it feels good to be in the know.

But because I am somewhat late ( and still not team wear) I am not always wearing the clothes out.

Trends can be strange:
I remember (not so long ago) the thin long kimono as a topper, I liked that, saw it everywhere for a month and then: gone. Just like the mustard sweaters I saw everywhere in October.

I generally haven't been an early adopter for trends, but if I take one up, I'd definitely like to wear the heck out of it while it still feels current. My new(ish) leopard skirt is a pretty good example. I'm consciously trying to wear it a LOT right now, because it's a specifically trendy piece that, despite being a classic print, I think will suffer from having been overexposed in a compressed time period. Like loafer mules and cold shoulder tops.

On the other hand, if you like something and it really works for your style, Angie's right that trends don't really matter. I kind of wonder if fast fashion hasn't been the architect of its own demise in this. By compressing the trend cycle and moving through so many trends so quickly over years, they've destroyed the very thing they were taking advantage of. People have so many trends in their closets, they just wear whatever.

I have seen this and do think it is possible. For me peep toe booties/ sandals spring to mind - I wore mine out and considered re purchasing but in the end went for a new trendier style.

I am influenced by trends/ fashion - but am getting better at picking ones that are right for me. I have a dress and blouse with sleeve action ( bell sleeves in the dress and ruffles on the blouse) that I will wear again this winter - well I think I will - even though the trend has passed. They are in styles and colours that integrate well for me so that makes them easy to wear often.

Once again a great thread, Carla! I am not trendy enough for this to matter to me. I will still wear slim bottoms I suspect for many years now as I like them best.

Hmm. Have to think. I’ve worn out trendy items but can’t say I’ve ever worn out a trend completely. I like to wear old trends...

I jumped relatively early on the cropped flare jeans trend - did some hacking of full length jeans. I got couple more eventually but started seeing more people wear that style ( good fit and not so ) and cooled on them. I still wear cropped flares in spring and summer but feel more excited by loose fitting modern jeans now.
The boyfriend, utility style jeans seems more interesting to me and that loose style is easier to wear in warm California weather.

This is interesting, Carla. Like you, my style is quite classic but I do enjoy embracing *some* trends (the ones that appeal to me and suit me) because that is what helps keep fashion fun for me! I tend to agree with you that the secret to doing so in what we might call an ethical or sustainable way is:

1. Jump on the trend early. As you said. (Like Angie, I tend to do this with bottoms, if I can find a fit, because trendy bottoms make me happy. Recent examples would be cropped wider legs -- I had a pair four years ago! Ended up retiring for wear and replacing this year.)

Another trend I bought into early was higher shaft booties. I'm still wearing some of these early purchases and others I've worn out and upgraded/ replaced with similar models. For me, a higher shaft has proved practical so I won't be getting rid of them until they are worn out, trend or no. Even if we return to full length pants next year, I'll wear my higher shafts. The shaft will just be more hidden. Not a problem for me.

2. Ensure the trend is really *you* and not something you'll tire of easily. For me, and probably also for you, stripes fall into that category. Mariner striped tops were really hot for quite a while there. I bought in early and bought in hard and I am still wearing these (or their replacements) because Mariner stripes will always be "me" whether they are currently trendy or not! I definitely wear these out.

3. Again, your point: Buy conservatively if you are unsure or it's a wild card.

My example: A bell sleeved top. I loved, loved, loved, loved the colour...and wanted to try a bell sleeve. But I suspected it wouldn't work for me, and I was right. Too loosy goosy/ hard to layer / in the way of things I wanted to do. Sooo....that is an example of a trend I did indeed pass along, due to feeling "not okay" in it. (Not "dated" but just not myself.) Still, I passed it along with almost no wear, while it was still "trendy" (and thus attractive to someone else) and in good condition. And I didn't buy ten or twelve of these so it was an experiment as opposed to a waste. (Or at least that's how I see it.)

However -- I later found a good way to incorporate the trend -- for me -- and now, even though the trend is officially over I am happily still wearing this -- in the form of a structured jacket bought inexpensively on consignment vs. as a top. Bingo. (Items in Finds).

4. Buy as accessories. I like animal print but only in small doses. So my animal print purchases are footwear, scarf, belt. Ditto for the "western" trend last year. These will have longevity for me. A scarf or belt can be put in a holding zone for the next time the trend surfaces. In my case, most footwear gets worn out before the trend ends, because I walk so much. So it's not a worry.

5. If destined to be lesser-worn due to level of dressiness or casualness (or climate related reason) buy in your key neutral. You can get more wear from it during peak trend period. And after, it will blend seamlessly and less glaringly into your closet so you can continue wearing it past peak season if you wish. My example: paper bag waist midi.

This is very interesting, Carla. Great thoughts!

I'm an early trend adopter in BOTTOMS especially, outerwear, and footwear (as far as I can manage with my fussy feet). I like to keep that part of style as hot off the press as what tickles my fancy. I am modern classic and wear the icons too: pearls, denim jackets, scarves, big skirts, fit & flares, shirts, blouses, military styling, knitwear, Chucks....come to mind.

These days I think VERY differently about trends. There are no fads, and trends go on for as long as you want to wear and milk them. Or until you've worn them out. It's trendy to wear thrifted items that once looked very dated. Now they look hip, when remixed with current items.

I report on the trends because it's my job, and after 28 years in the RAG trade, I don't know any differently. But trends are becoming less and less relevant. I make a point of communicating that too.

I am a late trend adopter. And I also do not let things go easily, if they still fit well and are not worn. I try to remix the not so current items in new ways. But, I don´t really own many really trendy items, I think.
